  • After missing my opportunity to film #4960 due to the extreme fire danger conditions in July of 2021, I finally got the opportunity to witness the former CBQ Mikado pull a train up to the Grand Canyon and back to Williams. I would be chasing with @GIMRRC for most of the way up and back, so be sure to check out his video of the chase as well!
    Locations in order include:
    -Rodeo Road, Williams, AZ
-North Grand Canyon Boulevard, Williams, AZ
    -Pronghorn Ranch Road, Williams, AZ
-Latigo Road/Big Elk Road, Williams, AZ
    -Grand Canyon Village, AZ
-Latigo Road/Big Elk Road, Williams, AZ
    -Espee Road, Williams, AZ
    -Rodeo Road, Williams, AZ
Next time, I'll definitely have to ride behind #4960! I hope y'all enjoy!

Question for ya. When moving from the depot spot after departure from Williams, what route did you take to get to pronghorn ranch road? Also how many minutes did you beat the train by?
I’m doing the 4960 chase next week and I’m trying to judge just how fast I need to move between spots.

To get to Pronghorn Ranch Road from the visitor's center parking lot, I took Main Street north, took a right on Rodeo Road headed east, then a left onto Airport Road headed north. Once you reach the airport, Airport Road becomes Pronghorn Ranch Road. Airport Road/Pronghorn Ranch Road is unpaved, but is well-maintained, so it's a fairly smooth ride, thankfully. It took me about 10 minutes to get to the Pronghorn Ranch Road crossing and the train took about 4-5 more minutes to get there. After you get the train there, head to the main road. It's got a 65 mph speed limit, so getting and staying ahead of the train shouldn't be a problem. Another spot you can hit up and still beat the train to the Grand Canyon National Park is Big Elk Road/Latigo Road. After that, I'd recommend heading straight to the Grand Canyon National Park for any arrival shots. It's $35 to get into the park and there's a spot at the Maswik Laundry Road crossing with a nice s-curve shot. Also, if you want to get a shot of the train at Willaha on the way back, bear in mind it's roughly 8 miles on Willaha Road, a gravel/dirt road off the highway, headed west to the crossing, so it's a bit of a gamble if you want to stay ahead of the train after the fact. However, they did do a train robbery just north of Big Elk Road as seen in the video, so, if you do go to Willaha you should be it back to Big Elk Road for another shot there. Then you can beat the train to Espee Road, which is a nice spot as well. After that, you can easily beat the train back to either Rodeo Road in Williams or the depot for a shot of it coming back into town. Hope this helps!

@@MiddleTennesseeRailProductions This is exactly the info I needed. Thanks!
The only differences I might do is not follow the train all the way to the canyon. I'd like to get some BNSF Transcon action in as well, so I was planning to break off GCRY after Latigo road, spend the mid day on the transcon, then return to Latigo about an hour before arrival to Williams and chase 4960 back in.

@@TwoRibbonRailvideos That was between 8:15am to 8:30am if I remember correctly. I'd be out there around 8 just to be safe.

Me and a friend are working on a video documentary about this locomotive. Is it alright if we borrow this footage for that? We would list your name in the credits.
