- In Early April 2021, the Grand Canyon Railway #4960 ran to the canyon's South Rim, for the first time in more than a year. Built in 1923 by Baldwin, the former Chicago Burlington & Quincy 2-8-2 steam locomotive normally runs once a month between March & September on the line, but was canceled due to the pandemic. 2020 had virtually zero steam locomotive events on the calendar, so seeing a steam locomotive "excursion" back on the rails was a welcome sight!
In this video, you'll see the 4960 as it makes its way from Williams, AZ to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and back. In addition to the steamer, I threw in various shots of the other Grand Canyon trains, powered by their fleet of ex-Amtrak F40PH locomotives.

I can't help but notice it sounds like 4960 has a different bell on
Yeah, I notice that too.
9:38 god damn that echo is amazing
Must of been great to see 4960 running the trains again after a year. Though 1 thing surprises me that it's bell sounds a but different t like it's being rung slower.
So cool! I'll be riding this in June. Can't wait! Thanks!
This locomotive was once owned by a man named Richard Jensen who owned several other steamers including Grand Trunk 4-6-2 no 5629 which got scrapped in Chicago back during the 1980s, A friend of mine's relative knew him.
Actually it was 4963 he owned for a short while before CW&I illegally sold it and CB&Q 5632 to a scrapyard. 5629 however was lost at Blue island, not Chicago like 5632.
Super scenery for a preserved railway. That's some ambitious shunting move to turn the coaches. 🤓 Fabulous video Michael. Well done 🤓 stay safe 💙
I'm planning on possibly making a visit to GCR later this year or next year to ride behind 4960, hopefully if all goes well I'll be able to see the nearly century old mikado in action
Nice Collection of Rolling Stock, Well Done to all.
great clips!
I used to enjoy watching the steam train come into the Grand Canyon village. When Xanterra changed the train into a boring commuter train, I stopped watching it. I enjoyed the OLD train SO MUCH MORE!!!!
Beautiful video, thanks for sharing!! Great to see her back.
I am in canada and things aren’t going so well here :(

Great catch !
Sounds like she has a new bell. Cause I rode it back in 2014 and it had a higher note but maybe it’s just me.
Awesome video!
Hey man! Was wondering if I could use a clip for a mikado compilation I’m making. You will be credited
Amtrak 19 and Grand Canyon 239 the same beeps are heard.
They changed its bell?
There’s Something Different About 4960’s Bell Tone Sound Hmmm.....
Hey mate what video camera do you use?

Why do they run Steam only once a month
"I refuse to die" Oh hear my haunting whistle you modern men and women! Your forefathers built me and I refuse to die! For I steam down the tracks in North America and I refuse to die! The Government might hate me and even try to put me in a museum but I refuse to die! I steam into the new day and with a smile on a youngster's face and a grin on an old man's face, I refuse to die. -Anonymous 2021
