I actually think the popularity of Stranger Things sort of created a real thrive for a lot of horror films coming out these days. So much about that 80s aesthetic is popular right now. I would like to say...i was all over that shit long before Stranger Things however. lol Ill add this to the list.
Sean, following your recommendation I saw this today. You were right; it's a cut above the rest. Beautiful, stylish, and very colorful it manages to be creepy without being dark and drab. It's well written. Blissfully, there is no "film school fluff" in this one. The editing is tight so it moves right along using its hour and thirty-seven minute runtime well which is something I really appreciate since so many modern movies are just too damned long. The nonlinear storyline reminded me Nolan's or Tarantino's earlier works and adds to the tone and pacing, as does the very, very effective score and sound design as you mentioned. Both the two main actors do an excellent job; Kyle Gallner is great but Willa Fitzgerald is absolutely amazing and truly, single-handedly carries the film. Her character is multifaceted and she portrays them all convincingly, even sympathetically. Although her character is thoroughly unlikable, you do end up liking her in spite of it all. Or if not liking, at least you feel sorry for her. I was impressed! I didn't mind the epilogue, I think it rounded out the film and gave it closure. A final end to a twisty story. My only half-assed complaint came in the fist act, Chapter 3. I'm allergic to stupid characters doing stupid things; it breaks my immersion and makes it difficult for me lose myself again. When The Lady is in the woods and douses herself with flammable liquid (vodka? gin?) and then blazes up a blunt I expected her to go up a fireball. But no, no explosions! Luckily it was early on and I settled back in. I was a bit disappointed that the lady cop survived, but I'm just blood thirsty I guess. Anyway, great movie, thanks for the suggestion.
I absolutely loved this movie. Top 3 of the year for me. The good thing is even after the reveal there is a ton of movie left and it was just balls to the walls literally to the very last 2-3 minutes of the movie. It appears you have one of these folks in your comments crapping on the movie because they are so ‘clever’ and figured the very obvious twist. Clearly way more people are having an absolute fun blast with this movie and they drown out pretty much a lot of the negative Nancys shitting on this movie. But when I was watching this I absolutely was thinking “there are gonna be people who really, really, hate this movie” because…this movie turns the tables on the narratives and we all know there’s a certain % of people who are so sensitive that they are offended by how this movie subverts certain norms. You just can’t make THAT person the big baddie. The nose ring blue hairs are raving mad over on Reddit on this movie.
Someone's always gonna be mad about something these days lol. Most people seem to be enjoying this one a good bit. I just say my honest thoughts, discuss and move on and let them yell into the abyss
I am glad Strange Darling is getting good reviews I am so stoked to watch this I was immediately intrigued from the trailer and it sounds it does not disappoint
You have quickly become a go to film reviewer for me. Cause simply: you ain’t with the bullshit. 😂 I saw your review of don’t blink and was like, “yea this dude speaks my language”. I feel like I can trust your word.
Just giving my honest thoughts on everything I see lol. There's been a handful of times so far this year I haven't agreed with the general consensus but we all have things that work/don't work for us
I just saw it last night. This is an excellent movie. I loved it.Someone actually stopped me as I was walking out to ask me what I thought and they loved it as well. I hope it gets more eyes on it as it’s easy in my top 5 for the year. I loved the score and the non linear plot.
Completely agree bud, It's somewhere around my top 5 as well. The way they did the chapters is something I want to see more movies do, it really kept me guessing
I went in blind like it was recommended by so many reviewers. Personally, I didn’t like it but I can see how people may like it. The out-of-sequence order in which the chapters were told felt like a cheap parlor trick to capture the audience. However, remove that, and the movie is nowhere near as smart as it thinks it is. If you pay close attention to the things that are said between the actors, you will figure the “twist” out pretty early on before the “words” were spoken. At that point, I checked out. It just wasn’t for me but I’m glad people went out and collectively enjoyed a movie.
@@SeanKennyYT Man you pretty much nailed the review & didnt give away the plot of the movie. I just finished watching it and it’s definitely a unique thriller that reveals itself without being deceitful. So many minor details to think back on and wonder why you assumed this was the story and characters. And a hell of a performance from Willa Fitzgerald who plays “The Lady”. In a different genre and tone she would be up for an award nom. The style of the film reminds me of Ti West movies, in particular “Pearl”. Another movie from earlier this year that it is similar to is Love Lies Bleeding which I thought was really good and rich in its small surprises. Thanks for the recommendation.
@@SeanKennyYT Throughout most of the movie my criticisms prior to the ending is that all the character are either evil, stupid or a victim; it's good to have a strong upright character to end the film on
Nothing more annoying then RUclipsrs with their click bait thumbnails and low bar with their overratings. Stop insulting peoples intelligence... The twist was not a twist since it was obvious in the first few minutes. It was quite boring and predictable.
