Great video Ben. One little winter tip from a Wyoming guy. Nitrile surgical type goves... no insulating value at all but they will keep your hands dry! Perfect for under fingerless gloves or by themselves if its like an "inbetween" day. A lot of the time I can wear these in place of insulated gloves.

May I suggest that you keep a towel, no not a bath towel around your waist , but a small hand towel in your pocket to dry your hands immediately after they get wet - especially if you catch a fish or retrieve a fly from a snag. Remember, wet hands are cold hands

@@oak8728 Just because you use a fly, doesn't make it fly fishing. You aren't casting, therefore it's not really fly fishing. Here's why. If you have a heavier fly and a lighter spin casting rod, and you put the fly on the spin caster, is that fly fishing? No, I don't think so.

I'd add to this that on top of your base layer and between outer layer it's really nice to wear something slippery. It makes it easy to slip in and out of waders, put on or take off your jacket, or even add another layer if you need too. Without the slippery material, changing your outer layers can sometimes cause some inner layers to bunch up or come untucked and compromise your nice warm layering.

Ben, one thing you forgot to mention. NO COTTON! as a Great Lakes “lake run rainbow” guy I know from having worn cotton in the cold. Cotton does not wick moisture. You must wear all wool or synthetic layers. If not your cotton will end up soaked with your own sweat and you will get cold.

My last trip out in Colorado was in the middle of January and the river was still frozen but it warmed just enough to start melting a few stretches of open water I can cast to. Nailed 3 browns in a little sliver of flowing water while standing on a sketchy snow bank using a black stone and hares ear. And one of my best times in winter was on a lake I will not mention, ice fishing with jigs tipped with a piece of nightcrawler and knocked the crap out rainbows anywhere from 10"-18" and yes I did keep a few and they were delicious. That ice can get sketchy though especially when you can hear it gurgling underneath your feet. Love your vids stay huge! Oh and uh tightlines

Recently got off the Henry’s Fork mid to low 20s all day drug the boat out over an ice shelf at the ramp ( lucky to get it out ) just getting dark go to take my waders off boots and laces frozen 🥶 my buddy has the waders with the boots built in no problem off they come . He had to help me chisel my boots off to get my waders off , very enlightening . Living in MT is great like CO but when January and February roll around it’s thoughts of Tarpon and Permit , somewhere warm . No snow yet , does not bode well for or rivers this year not to mention fires 🔥 that beer looked really good but only 7:30am , but then I thought what would I do in Mexico? Cheers :-)
