Might be the best ending yet lol stay huge!
I totally rewinded and opened a beer lol!
Agreed!
I’m ambidextrous! Equally capable of birds nesting my line with either hand!
Are we still talking about fly fishing
If you can bird's nest a fly reel, I'm not disappointed, I'm impressed
@@sabiangriffin3713 It’s doable... just happened to me today rushing to rip line off the reel to cast not remembering that I loosened the drag all the way.
@@JCarlton904 I am truly impressed my good sir. And one question. In which location do reside in for it to be possible to go fly fishing in the time of year when much of the surface of many water bodies has solidified?
@@sabiangriffin3713 Well I’m sorry for your solidified water. Not to boast about it but I’m here in the wonderful state of Florida.
I'm supposed to be reeling with my HANDS??
Same. Hopefully this will reduce cramping in my knees
Shocking! I know! My denturologist will be so disappointed I finally found that info.
haha seeing Tom with the Huge Fly Fisherman sticker is great
Keeping it real every Monday like clockwork. Best philosophies and advice in the game. Appreciate you man.
You are such a hoot 😂. I love watching your videos. Not only are they hilarious, but they are so informative. I’m very new to fly fishing and I’ve learned so much from you. Thank you very hugely.
My dad taught me to reel with my left hand ........ about 50 years ago. Thanks for the vid. Always enjoyable 👍
That ending. Hilarious! Now, back to watching the other 1OO vids I haven’t seen.
“Do what works best for you and apply that philosophy to everything...” best philosophy ever! You must be a philosiphizer. Thanks for another great video!
SO true! Nailed it... I recently got back into fly fishing and am loving it. Love the purist stuff (take care of the fish, etiquette, tying, etc) but also hate some of it too such as "wrong hand! ", casting (I gets the fly where it needs to go). Thanks for the beer time!
I also cast and reel with my right hand. One bonus to this is when I shoot line on the presentation the reel crank handle is to the right while the loose line is to the left, so the shooting line will not snarl on the crank handle.
I like that.
Loved the ending! I’m doing Great...Thanks for asking! Extremely relieved that I’m reeling with the correct hand ✋🤚😂 Have a Huge week Ben. 🎣
I always enjoy your vids and look forward to Monday’s to get another “dose” of “Huge”...Thanks for that Ben. ...and PS- I look forward to the time that my non-dominant tires out while bringing in a fish.😁
On point - just love when the fly shop asks what hand to you reel with.. and I sit there thinking for about 5 minutes. Don't know, don't think I have really paid that much attention to that aspect.
Great advice and that is how I will do it.Thanks for the video.
Awesome as always! Cheers, buddy
Thanks for posting. Being lefthanded (and my kids are right-handed) I have always noticed your retrieve hand in your videos. Mystery solved for me! PS I stayed for the full 8 minutes.
Love this channel. Informative and funny as hell!!
Hell isn't very funny...unless you're a sadist
I'm left handed, and it was handy to learn by doing it your way. But I still found the flow of things better when reeling with my right hand. Interesting view on reeling from you brother. It'll get it done either way
I love how his answer for questions like "what's the best way to perform x activity?" and his answer is always "it doesn't matter, it's just fly fishing, we're not building spacecraft or anything super-critical"
love your old videos, but the more you can do about how you get to water you dont normally fish, and determine what fly to use, how to fish it, what your thought process is for exploring ; the better for all of us!
Thanks for your vids, you've been a huge help to my fishing.
The way you ended the video saying it had to be at least 8 minutes long to get the commercial is pure gold!! I’m doing great myself haha!!
You are seriously the best thing on RUclips.
You rock dude. Love this channel
I also have always been more comfortable casting and reeling with my dominant hand. When I read Arnold Gingrich, founder of Esquire magazine and, like you, a huge flyfisherman, explaining that he preferred this too, my bias was sufficiently confirmed!
Thanks and stay huge!
Lefty here and I reel right hand. I have seen everything done. Thanks for the video
I primarily used an open-face spinning outfit before learned to fly fishing (late 1960's) so started using my dominant hand to hold the fly rod and non dominant hand to reel- just as I did with my spinning outfits. My rule of thumb is if the real is underneath the rod, I use my non dominant hand to reel, but if the reel is above the rod (casting / trolling rods / closed face spin) I do the opposite. I agree, whatever is easiest / more natural when you start will serve you fine moving forward. Love the vids ... keep'm coming.
Saw one of your stickers on a lift tower at Winter Park yesterday. Made me smile 😎
That was me.
Saw your sticker on a rod vault at grand targhee last week. Made my friend smile.
This explains why almost all of the old reels i get are right hand retrieve. Greeting from Scotland BTW
Growing up fishing with my dad, I learned how to cast from him. He's left handed, and im right handed. But I learned to reel, fight fish, and the like southpaw. To this day I feel more in control of a fish if I'm using my right hand to reel or put pressure on the reel (cause redfish will get you on the reel lol).
Great video as always dude
Ditto, my dad is left handed too and I even prefer to cast left handed but can do both
I’m pretty much amphibious when it comes to reeling but I do like to keep the rod in my dominant hand (right) and reel with my left. I guess, like you, I’ve been doing it this way for so long it feels more natural. I do have two rods set up for right hand retrieve that I use a lot and don’t even notice the difference. Thanks for the interesting video.
Possibly the best outro yet!
Good video Ben 😛
Hey man love how you don't overcomplicate things get a rod that has some line tie on a leader and a fly and go fish in some water keep it up my friend
Yeah, no rules! Do what works for you. You can even call fake salmon egg's flies, EXCEPT don't ever try and call it fly-fishing if you aren't using a reel. That's fishing with a cane pole or Tenkara. Lol (I love Ben's rants about Tenkara best of all.)
@@noyopacific One other Rule. Fishing the redds sends you straight to hell. All the way down. Boiler room of hell. ya know the meme where Pete Griffin is in the elevator with God? Yeah that, Pete is asking about assholes who fish redds (you can't insert a meme into a youtube comment alright)
@@noyopacific Why do you say "that's fishing with a cane pole or a cane pole"?
@@sabiangriffin3713, Ben sometimes rants on Tenkara (which he calls cane pole fishing.) I enjoy Ben's rants and would like to instigate another. It's just a little bit of good-natured sarcasm.
You’re doing it the right way Ben. Right and right.
You guys are lucky to get out fishing we can’t do anything just now in Scotland because of Chinese COVID-19 😂😂 but I cast with my right and reel in with my left been doing it since I was young and I am 70 and just love fly fishing I do enjoy watching your videos and I have fished over in BC and in Alaska and that was ace except in Alaska we were there when 9/11 happened and that was horrendous for those poor folks who died but I now just fish for brown trout, rainbow trout and sea trout but mostly brownies in Northern Scotland nice and wild ✊🏴🇬🇧🇺🇸🇨🇦 tight lines and stay safe ✊🎣
Been doin good, thanks for asking. I just passed my year anniversary for my kidney transplant so thats HUGE. Had to have my old ones removed because they were too HUGE. Life is just HUGE, ya know it?
Entertaining as always, thanks.
I’ve been watching for around 6months now cause well mainly your videos are funny and sometimes you actually fish. I’m in Missouri which is well known for not having trout but we do have several trout parks which to me is kinda cheating but it’s what I got and it’s a good place to learn. I have to try a fly rod just go with a 5ft ultra light combo with tiny line and some tippet. I caught some trout this past summer it was by far the best fishing experience ever. I’m hooked on standing in river and fishing. Now I’m ready for a fly rod, I think. Going to be a big learning curve and lots to learn. I do plan on watching your older video tutorials for help but any tips advice for beginner rod reel setup would be awesome (and I might buy some Huge gear). Stay huge!
Also your outro’s are by far the best of any fishing videos I subscribe to.
Thanks Nate!
Always loved a dry cold 10 degrees. They’re the best
This is how everyone should be! Who cares, whatever is natural! do what's best for you!!! Love your videos man!!
hey Ben, great video. I really appreciate your sense of humor! I reel left handed largely because I grew up spin fishing with the crank on the left. This feels right to me. I wish I could go both ways like you:) I have read that the right handed reel is preferred by Salmon and Steelhead fisherman because: if you spend all day casting with your right arm, when you finally get that one bite and hook into a hoss, you will need the strength of your left arm to land it.
AND the line doesn't get caught on the handle as often. AND you reduce the chance of the handle getting caught on fx a pocket, when a fish takes a rush (I've seen it happen, costing the angler a good fish).
Loved this video! I'm old and cynical...I had a guy last summer what hand to reel with. I told him to go buy a tencura and he could practice in his toilet catching brown trout.
I feel like such a huge fly fisherman right now cause I’m pretty sure I’ve seen all of those videos
Same
Yeah I'm a righty. Where I fish (saltwater) you can get some good sized, fast moving fish on. Bull Trout, Coho, Ling Cod. When one of those starts swimming toward you, and you already have them on the reel, you need to take up line ASAP. I can do that much better with my right, beyond doubt. I've never lost a fish switching the rod from my right to left hand.
Lots of big game salty dudes reel with their dominant hand as they don’t want their arm to be tired fighting a fish after a long day of casting 9-12wts. And to make up quick ground on backing like you mentioned. Great video as usual and nice hat
I have a shit ton of metal in my left wrist from multiple surgeries putting it back together from snowboarding crashes. I use my left to reel and my non injured right hand to hold the weight of the fish. To each their own! Hugeness is cool
Really really enjoying your video! Always a hoot. I still think you need to put a video together featuring the squirmy wormy. No one could feature such a traditional fly as the squirmy wormy like you could!🤭😏🐋
I learnt a while ago while fishing with an Alvey centerpin reel that winding with my strong hand (right) was the only way I could keep up with fish that make runs towards you. So the same applies with a fly reel - just try winding as fast with your non dominant hand and then with your strong hand and see which wins :)
It’s a dry cold? 😂 Just like in AZ when it’s 110 and the people always say it’s a dry 110.
Me sweating like I have Malaria or Dengu Fever wondering when I’m going to just “climatize” and get used to it. The videos do make me laugh thanks for all the effort you put into making them. Hope spring comes early this year.
I am surprised more people aren't mentioning the FFBI hat!! Great video.
Love this channel.
Superb Finale!
(6:50) Same here. Brookies, but under the ice, and that ice is on a river, so I can't ice fish it, but I can go on the lakes thankfully. But not for the trouts.
Thank You for this video. I get bugged all the time for reeling with my right. Eff those guys😉
Good morning
After 40 years of reeling with my "non-dominant" hand, It has become my dominant reeling hand. So I have the best of both worlds. You are totally correct that it doesn't matter with the small fish that we catch 90% of the time. But I would never want to switch hands to reel in a Tarpon. That switch would usually happen about a split second after the first hook set. So I'm not feeling good about having to make that switch. And then, I gotta think about making additional hook sets with my non-dominant arm. No thanks. Tarpon are hard enough to hook already. But the point you made is, "do what works for you". Again, totally agree. But if I am teaching a newbie, I am probably going to teach them not to switch hands to reel. Liked this vid.
One of your best videos. Has anyone suggested you fish with Jesse Pyle from Texas? Great guy.... that would be a hella show!!
That was the most awkward ending. I loved it! 😂😂😂
I have been fishing all my life and have been considering adding a fly rod to my arsenal. You have an obvious understanding of fishing demonstrated by the fact that you constantly down play the importance of meaningless things like which hand you real with. Learning some stuff. Going to watch your bass fishing video to see if I’m right about you, lol.
Nice Ben, you know how many Brookies I've caught in that stream? "Zactly none 'cause it's nowhere near my home......just thought I'd share that. 🤣
The intro was perfect.
I enjoyed the beer and the talk
Enjoy your videos!
I've used my left hand to reel in ever since the first fixed spool reels that were available to me were lefthand only.
That was about 65 years ago.
The only good argument I've heard for reeling with your dominant hand is that, if you have a running fish, the reel handles are held away from your clothing and so won't catch on it.
Love the FFBI hat.
Ben, awesome channel, love your videos. I have to tell you, though, you need to up your game with the beer you drink. Come on out to the Midwest, I will show you around The Driftless area, we’ll catch some fish, and I will and turn you on to some awesome craft beer. The invitation is always open!
Not only have I learned to reel with both hands, I have learned to cast with both hands. That comes it real handy on a drift boat
And side winds.
Best video yet now I can say it’s not me it’s you
Doing great Ben! Thanks for asking. By the way, I had a collection of vintage reels, all left hand retrieved. Just saying
They were probably sent back from the future.
I don't fish single hand rods, but when I have to retrieve line, I just spin the reel on the edge, while having the loose line under my little finger, to avoid it laying up toto loose or a birds nest getting reeled in. Works fantastic.
Ready to stay huge for another 112 episodes!
Pepe made the vid! 🤣🤙 Stay Huge Ben. Videos are awesome. Thank you.
LOL you nailed the ending....
Come out to north east ohio this spring and hit the steelhead during the run man! You would have a blast
There was a college basketball player back in the 80s (Charles Shackelford, NC State, R.I.P) who was famous for answering a question about his shooting “I can shoot with my left hand. I can shoot with my right hand. I’m amphibious.”
Maybe he was a fly fisherman and was just ahead of his time...
Love the wook photo meme, my phriend!
Totally agree!
Cast right and reel right. its zebco's fault the 202 was right hand reel when i was a kid, but now i have a total left fusion so my left hand is only good at holding the rod i can reel with it if i need to but it just looks dorky
haha i use my left but when i get tired i flip the reel up and wind backwards with my right.
I would cast and reel with my right hand when I spin fished, but when I started fly fishing I left the reel on the left hand side. Idk lol.
Impress your friends and enemies..lol. I love this ending.
I always appreciate the Huge vids. One thing, I've looked through the entire vid list, the Boats playlist and I swear the crawl or crab stroke vid is not visible. Did it perhaps get set to private or not public?
I messed that part up. It’s in the how to row a drift boat video.
@@HugeFlyFisherman Ah cool, thanks! Checking it out, I should have looked that one.
Edit: Found it, perfect, thanks Huge!
That orange reel is dope, son!
If you spin fish, you can be much better at off-hand reeling. But then, I use a right-hand reeling baitcast because, when I flip and jig fish, it's hard to reel left. It has something to do with having the reel above vs. below the rod. For me, it makes a difference. I bought 2 baitcasters for left reel, and just couldn't use them even though not switching rod hands while flipping would be SUPER helpful.
When I startet in flyfishing in 1971 all reels was right hander as my dominant hand. So thats what i do today, but I was envy of my father, he could cast eqaully good with both hands. I tried but failed.
You gotta love Tom!!
Doing well man, thanks for asking. We need more snow.
For real
“Ambi-reeler”. Perfect!
Best ending ever! 😂😆🤣
In Europe everyone reels with the left hand. Doesn’t matter if you’re right or left handed. Only time when I switched my retrieve is when I had a tennis arm injury and taught myself to cast with the left hand as I couldn’t even properly hold a bottle anymore so I had to stick with the hard work for my left arm.
you can cast with both hands as well....I do that to give my right arm a break....works ok too...sometimes better...lol
As a predominately saltwater fly fisherman,, I reel with my right hand simply because it is easier for me to fight off the reel with my right hand reeling. Freshwater, I have my reels set up however they were when I purchased them. I do not recall fighting any trout off the reel.
I would add, as a cast with right reel with left hand guy, i like to keep my dominate hand to hold the rod for fighting fish. Seems easier to get tired that way than reeling. Im talking a river runs through it kind of fish fight dragging me down the river! 🤣
THIS IS THE WAY!!!
If you are still looking for content ideas....fly reel maintenance. I spray them with a garden hose or run them under water from time to time, but do you really need to take them apart and oil the bearings? I’m nervous I’ll never be able to get it back together again correctly.
Left hand to retrieve strip or manage line
You reel with the hand that feels natural to you. That is often the hand that picks up line fastest also....and that is imporrtant when your tarpon takes a u turn and comes straight at you. If this is your left or right hand doesnt matter.
I use my right hand and that has served me well.
Not every joke will be a homerun but I really enjoyed this video, and stayed until the very end.
