  • Hello! This is part five of building your performing confidence. If you struggle with nerves while singing, ask yourself, “What am I focusing on while I am performing?”
    Your answers could be...
"I hope the sound comes out."
"I hope I do this right."
"I hope they like it. My heart needs to stop pounding. I feel so nervous."
"I hope I remember my words. I hope my top notes come out. I hope I don’t embarrass myself…I hope I don’t die!"
…it feels that way sometimes doesn’t it?
All those thoughts are normal. I have been there...but again, let’s be strategic and build our confidence by giving the brain a job…and better focus.
Performing is not the time to be worrying about vocal technique. That work is done in the practice room days and weeks before the performance.
Performing is not the time to be worrying if you will remember all your lyrics, again this work and testing is done long before you step out on stage.
Performing is the time to be present and tell your story in a way that no one else can. It is time to trust the technique that you have layered into the body and brain.
So, on what should we focus?
In this video, I share what was taught to me and what I pass on to my clients...
    This is a game-changer!
    Enjoy!

You are welcome! I am so glad you found the series helpful. Yes, we are all excited to get back to singing :) And, you are right... after this crazy year of lockdown and no live singing, performing can feel brand new and nerve wracking. Here's to all the cool stuff we will learn about ourselves and our singing this year! It will only get better and better! Take care!

This series was so helpful. I didn't watch it earlier on, because I was thinking "I'll be confident, when I can sing better." LOL! I realize how ridiculous that thought was now. It's all interwoven. These strategies are great. Thank you!

I am so glad you found this series helpful. Good point! I love these strategies because they can support us while we learn to sing...while we learn a new song. Our process can be strategic and personalized for best results. Great awareness!

Thank you so much for these videos on singing with confidence. I find that my anxiety while singing comes in degrees of how removed I am from others hearing me. Singing alone, I'm the least anxious, but the moment I try to record myself singing, the anxiety increases. It feels so silly for that one thing to change my fear level so much. Really going to work on internalizing your lessons!

Thank you so much for your comment and for watching this video. Sorry for my delayed response. I've been traveling. It is not silly at all. It is very normal. Every new element shifts our experience. I am very sensitive to that as well. Do the slow work giving yourself time to feel comfortable at each level. Teaching your body that you are safe. Also be aware of what thoughts come up as you go to the next level. Really being seen and heard is vulnerable work and all the stuff will come up as put ourselves out there. Wanting to be perfect, having people like our voice, fear of judgement and acceptance... all the stuff. Gently shift the thoughts to support you and the goals you want to reach. Let me know how it goes! Cheering for you!

Hi Tricia, your videos are SO helpful in really practical ways, and I love the way your positive and loving values come through in what you are doing. Some of them have been just what I needed in the moment, but whatever the topic, I always learn something that improves my singing! Have you ever done one about singing words beginning with "h"? I really struggle with this, especially when it's on the break in my voice as any breathiness puts me in danger there of a trill (diplophonia) as my note breaks up. It keeps coming up, in words like "hand', "happiness", and "heart" - especially when it's in front of an "ah" sound. It would be great to have your help on this if it is something that would be of interest to you, and to other followers. All the best and thank you for putting such wonderful energy out there for us. Lx

Wow, Tricia. I feel that this series was designed by you exactly for me and my current performance insecurity. The irony is that I realize now that I live in denial of this anxiety and somehow convince myself that I am seasoned and comfortable on stage until I'm standing in the light and realize only then that I am debilitated by the pressure of the moment, so much so that I ask myself, "Why am I putting myself through all this?" All my little glitches seem exaggerated and I get the impression that I am up here embarrassing myself in front of an audience too polite to call me out ("impostor syndrome"). Thanks for your devotion to the pedagogy of the psychology of vocal performance--it's comforting to know that you are in my corner.
A question on this lesson's technique: Is this "imaginary powerful person" you target someone you actually know or a constructed collage of personalities?

Thank you so much for your comment. I am overjoyed that you are finding this series helpful. I soooo relate to everything you are feeling while you are on stage. One thing I try to remind myself with those "little glitches that seem exaggerated" is that all the little nuances I feel while I am singing may never be seen or heard by the audience... while this doesn't make it a better experience for me... on some level it is nice to know I am not completely failing in the outcome to serve the music :) I ask myself that "why" question too... singing keeps drawing me back. It teaches me so much about me, life, others and about giving and receiving... true vulnerability, trust and love. It is is my vehicle for growth. It is and With the "powerful person" I choose a real person to imagine as it makes my commitment to the conversation more authentic to me. I can see and feel their energy, their facial expressions, the smell of their clothes, the space where we are...and I will also try different people to see how my delivery of the song changes. That said, if you create a composite character to sing to and it works for you... then do that. Give that brain a focus and get int he zone and have fun :) Thanks again for your comment. I am cheering for you, for sure!

@@rejoiceinyourvoice-tricial3731 Thanks for the reply, especially your response to the"why do it at all?" question ("...singing keeps drawing me back. It teaches me so much about me, life, others and about giving and receiving... true vulnerability, trust and love. It is is my vehicle for growth." This rings true to me. A healthy, sustainable way to explore the world around and within us. It helps me to downplay the importance of audience approval and to remember instead that I'm doing this to share my energy and love and that it's a privilege to have the will and wherewithal to do so. I hope to speak with you in lessons someday. Thanks again.

I always have a thing about being to self cautious of myself is because I don't always have the courage to express my feelings to someone that love. is because I'm to scared of showing the same affection as most people would do to others how can help me to be more confident

    • @rejoiceinyourvoice-tricial3731
      @rejoiceinyourvoice-tricial3731  3 года назад

Expressing love is such a vulnerable thing to do. I feel that my open heart and vulnerability should be reserved for those that have earned my trust. I reserve that part of me for very few and special people. When singing we can imagine singing to those people... we have separation and safety on stage as we connect in the moment to quiet places in our heart. Perhaps choose songs and lyrics that help you do this... share open heartedness and love with imaginary someone through song. Keep up the good work, Chelsea.
