I disagree, Adrian Shepard is not dumb, he wouldn't out right kill Freeman, he'd be more than capable of putting aside his orders from Black Mesa after realizing what the combine is and knowing humanity is on the brink of extinction, I know the memes about marines being stupid or jarheads etc but pre 2020 (cause standards changed from nobody signing up as much) the USMC Required a higher score on the AZFAB than the army did. The Marines don't want machines they want killers. Edit: especially cause Adrian never got the orders to kill all the scientists, his osprey gets shot down before those orders are relayed to him. And I don't think you even see Gordon that much in Opposing Force
