EXO's most savage and biggest fanbase 'till now are Chinese Exo-Ls (Cherries). EXO's MVs in China has hundreds of million views. EXO-M was doing so good at that time, it was (and STILL) SM who's so dumb they don't know how to take care of these rare gems of kpop. EXO's popularity is like an iceberg. Only true kpop fans will understand and appreciate their contributions to the current kpop industry.

A funfact about growl: I recently came to know that SM dint want to produce a good song( in terms of high budget) for Exo so they provided them only an empty basement and these uniforms themed suits. The boys were sad but so passionate that they did filmed it in one take. You can see the cap falling down.

1. EXO’s target market is China and Korea. EXO is big in both countries up till now, they’re still on top in China and got the biggest fanbase in China (and even invaded Japan). Chinese won’t let them go even after the political issues happened before
2. So EXO M and EXO K simultaneously promote in China and South Korea with same song in Korean (EXO-K) and Mandarin (EXO-M).
3. Former members (Luhan, Tao, Krs) had their own reasons as to why they left the group such as not paid properly, unfair treatment, health issues, etc.
4. As to why they became EXO as a group and not the subunit EXO-K and EXO-M and what songs:
- they became EXO (as 1 group) when they ALL have parts to sing/rap in a track, these tracks both have Korean and Chinese versions, but all of them have parts in either of the two versions hence they’re EXO
- EXO-K and EXO-M, only the members of these subunits have parts in a track. EXO-K (Suho, Baekhyun, Chanyeol, D.O., Kai, Sehun) sang the Korean version, EXO-M (Kr*s, Luhan, Tao, Lay, Xiumin, Chen) sang the Mandarin version,
- EXO (as 1 group) songs: Wolf, Growl, Miracles in December, and all songs from Call Me Baby era up to present
5. EXO became 9 members after Tao left, leaving Lay as the only Chinese member.
6. Lay was inactive as EXO member year 2017, if I remembered the year correctly, this was due to Political tension between South Korea and China, and because Lay being the ambassador of youth in China he had to halt his activities with EXO and went back to China. As of the moment, Lay left the company (SM entertainment) but still an EXO member. So EXO is 9.
7. Yes China has a different platform for everything. As for EXO music videos, they definitely have so much views there compared to YT (it’s billions of views there and im not even over reacting 😅)

As a Chinese who got into EXO in 2013, both exo-k and exo-m were a huge success in China, and still one of most well known kpop group in China (no longer the biggest within chinese kpop fandom, but definitely one of the most well known group nationwide)
The labels EXO-K and EXO-M simply indicated the language of the song, sung by which unit, and features primarily the members of that unit. They eventually stop doing it for a couple reasons. 1. the depart of three Chinese members (they claimed due to mistreatment). 2. Political tension btw China and Korea escalated, leading to China implementing a "Korean restriction order" that limited Korean entertainment activities in the China.
And you are right about the "internet wall", people in China cannot directly access apps like youtube, this and the fact most non-Chinese fans tend to stream the Korean versions of songs contributed to the relatively lower views of exo-m mv.
EXO is massive in China. Maybe even more than S Korea.
EXO was not a flop with beginning of their career.
It is just that, they have big shoes to fill.
In 2012, all groups under SM Entertainment (TVXQ, SuperJunior, Girls Generation, Shinee and f(x)) were already considered LEGENDs.
EXO started 3rd Generation of KPOP hence making them a Legend of their own.
They created a new sound in Kpop.

TVXQ - has been the biggest kpop group way back according to Guinness Book of records
Super Junior - started Hallyu wave in Asia and South/ Latin America.
Girls Generation - penetrated Hollywood music
SHINee - became successful in Japan, Europe, and America.
While EXO made Korean Music more popular internationally making them the South Korea - Nation’s Group and Ambassador.

As a Chinese exol, I can tell you very seriously that EXO has a lot of fans in China.There are a lot of fans who have liked them since 2012 and till now❤❤Their fan base in China is very large. And Chinese exols are very affectionate😢😢
The reason for the only EXO K in title, when all of them were in mv is because this song was a korean version.

One thing I noticed with EXO music is their vocals are really forward and clear in all their music videos. EXO also adds a lot of great adlibs on all their songs which I rarely hear in other kpop songs.
Growl is a one-take mv and love me right is an alice in wonderland inspired mv.
Exo-k is korean version and exo-m is for mandarin but exo has billion views in China its in another platform i believe its equivalent to yt.
Guys have to react to THE ULTIMATE GUIDE OF EXO, although it is a bit outdated regarding the solo works of the members, it is a very complete guide and you can know more about the history and concept of the group and also a little bit about each member. I look forward to your reaction pleaseeee 🙌✨

Honestly, no one knows why SM never gave Exo-M the attention it needed. Everything points to the fact that the company simply hates foreigners, because Exo to this day is the most popular group in China, even more than BTS.
I don't remember what year it was that the Chinese government banned K-pop and other foreign artists from the country, but Exo was still number 1 on the Chinese charts and when they unbanned this rule, Exo was the first group to be invited to play in China, so This proves that they were more than successful in China, but sadly SM is a company that has already had accusations of being discriminatory
EXO in China was and still is so big! former member Luhan was probably the first bias/ love of majority of older EXO-L. both Luhan and Tao still huge have a big fanbase and loved by many. Lay is still a part of EXO brotherhood and much loved. All of them left because of SME company.
There something I want to make clear: EXO has NEVER actually been a flop, and I am not saying this because I am an EXO fan. I am saying this as a member of the kpop community for more than 15 years. I have seen dozens of flops, EXO is not one of them.
EXO debuted in early 2012. SM was coming off the high of SNSD's "The Boys" album and DBSK's "Keep your head down" and "Catch Me" comebacks. Specifically DBSK created an Immense anount of attention because they had been Absent from the Korean industry for 3 years.
Comparatively, EXO debuted with one of the most confusing and unique concepts ever seen. The Korean public had never seen anything like this because back then it was either sexy or cute concepts, and most of the time even sexy was Controversial. It took awhile for them to accept it, which is why people labeled them a flop. Domestic sales were not near the projected amount comparatively to DBSK or SNSD and that is SM's only objective. Money. Their groups promote for about a month then they push merch for the rest of the year.
But even since debut, EXO has always been extremely popular overseas and especially in China. China does not have RUclips but Weibo etc. Last time I heard (which was a few years ago) the combined MV view count was around 12 billion. EXOL's do not competitively stream or vote anymore as the members have told us that they no longer care to win awards and have stopped attending award shows since 2017. This is after winning album of the year 4 times in a row mind you.
EXO has gone through wild controversy throughout the years and they still come back swinging each and everytime. In the last 2 years 5 EXO members have left SM after their contracts expired and are doing a whole hell of a lot better. 3 of them started their own companies, Lays done countless albums, gone touring, Baekhyun's planned a tour for April, done fanmeets, Xiumin's acting again, done fanmeets, Chen's Touring. SM has held them back for YEARS. We just hope to hell the others get out asap. Most importantly for their health and safety, secondly to have work opportunities and thirdly to put this flop sht to rest.
Dont forget d.o been doing brand deals and about to have a comeback!!!! ❤ cant wait for them all to leave sm, the only rhis sm wants is to make money. So many artist have leave sm lately im so happy😈

In my opinion Chris, Luhan and Tao aside from being mistreated by SM were successful enough already to have the courage to leave the group. After Mama they were in hiatus for like a year but when they came back Growl became like a national anthem in korea where there wasnt even tiktok yet so they were really big. Still is right now bec they still hold the #1 fastest selling tickets in the world on their live concerts.
EXO is massive in CHINA, Chinese members and the MVs are very famous in China, but since youtube is not accessible in China Chinese MV here are not really prioritized unlike Korean MVs
Actually, like you said about Love me Right that has such different parts and that's one of the reasons it has been used in survival shows (to debut in a kpop group) in korea bc of it's difficulty. A lot of songs of EXO actually it's always used and the competitors always are trying to avoid singing exo's songs bc it's really difficult lol.

I highly respect Exo and their music because they never fail to satisfy our diverse ears throughout the years. And let's not even forget their humbleness and honesty as humans not idols💯🔥✨
So even after they started releasing songs together (as in as just Exo and not as k and m), they still released Korean and Chinese of their songs and they targeted different audiences so adding one language in the other wouldn’t have worked, especially not back then. Also EXO-K and M in the titles doesn’t refer to which members are in the video, rather just that the song is Korean or Mandarin.
Actually all 3 of these songs were in their Killing Voice. Also Love Me Right live performance is so happy! And please do check out their b-sides! Watching their guides would be great, you’ll get to know them and also be introduced to many many of their songs in snippets, then you can choose some to check out!
Also if you want to know who exactly does which part, you can watch the colour coded lyrics, they tend to be pretty accurate (for the most part).

I am an OG K-Pop but I can say they have good songs over the years especially B Tracks. Their songs suit to my preference of music and of course the vocals.
KPOP have many good vocalists generally and EXO is one of them.
I am a fan of their unique vocal combination that really compliment every songs.
For that, as a fan, not only their discography as a group, their sub units and solos as well still keeps me waiting for them to enjoy different kind of music styles.

Chinese ex members were very famous specially luhan was so popular and loved even among Korean fans.Now they're are doing great actually, they have solid fan base, more than 60mill followers on weibo, have so much freedom, they act, song, host, have their own cloth brands, rich as f*ch and have a nice personality. All of exo deserved so much better, fortunately they're leaving SME.❤
I'm not good at English, but I think you'll understand. There are a lot of details in love me right because they are taken from the patch code video teasers from the exodus album. In 2015, when they released the album, they really blew up kpop. 10 members(before Tao left), each had their own teaser and they were filmed in different cities, different countries. All the capital letters cities at the end are combined into the title song call me baby. They also guessed the eclipse, and then the whole mess began. We fans really love the exo concept for this reason, new theories come with the new release. And it's very interesting.
Exo has its own concept with aliens who came from exoplanet, and they fight with the red force. It was shown in MAMA, and every clip has a reference to it. Also in the exo-k version, they sing purely in Korean, even if there are Chinese members, also in exo-m they sing purely in Chinese. I recommend looking at the exo guide, there is information there. Exo has the largest and most devoted fandom in China, of course Korean exo-l too 👍
Of course, their concept is not limited to aliens, they are sometimes football players (love me right), wolves(wolf), and so on.. They also have their own clones, that is, an alter ego (obsession)
A big part of EXO's appeal is also their lore is very fanfictionable? There were so much room for fan interpretation for their concepts that it engaged the fans deep and hooked them into the fandom! Their fandom culture was legendary~

EXO's concept has this kind of thing where EXO K is focused on Korea and M is focused on China which is why they always have Korean and Chinese version of all their early songs. SME focused on Chinese market as they are huge.
EXO just merged during the Wolf promotion (basically having all members record both Korean and Chinese versions and perform the songs in both Korean and Chinese) just like how the narrative from their debut MV, "Mama" mentioned, "The day the red force is purified and the 12 forces reunite into one perfect route, a new world shall open up.." Since then, they always promoted together both in Korea and China and of course Japan.
EXO M was huge huge in China. Same goes with EXO up to this day. As you stated, RUclips views of EXO M videos were not as much because they dont have RUclips in China. Chinese fans cant access it, so they couldnt stream EXO M videos. On the contrary, their views are no joke in the Chinese video streaming platform. They are one of the most streamed artists in China atm.
Also, EXO's popularity in China never declined up until now even after years of hiatus and all.. Just how their fansign event was sold out in an instant recently during their Cream Soda promotion (the first time they held an event in China after so many years). EXO has really loyal Cherries (Chinese EXO Ls) back there, an undeniable fact among EXO Ls.
When Chinese members were leaving one by one around. 2014-2015, the group kind of continued the Korean and Chinese version up to their recent releases (before, they had to record all tracks both in Korean and Chinese (from XOXO and repackaged version(Wolf, Growl) up to The War (4th Repackage album). Their recent albums only having the title tracks in Chinese included in the album, like Love Shot Mandarin ver, Tempo Mandarin Ver. and Obsession Ch ver.
At some point, only 3 EXO-M members were left, with Lay and the remaining Korean EXOM members(Xiumin and Chen), the company decided to just merge them and promote as EXO during the EXODUS era (Call me Baby),if Im not mistaken.
Lay (the only Chinese member who stayed) focused his promotions in China around 2016-2017 and with the Korea China political stuff going on, making it hard for Chinese idols to promote in Korea and vice versa. (Please correct me if Im wrong).
It was kinda cool how they switch from Korean to Chinese or vice versa when they were performing it live back then. Good old days. 🥰
EXO M did not really disband technically because disbandment is not SME's thing.

But, luhan,lay tao pursuing their solo career in china now.. Kris is in jail,🙄for his crime which i have nothing to say about..but the rest of them such as luhan. Growl is the song that made me enter kpop world for the first time. It broke my stereotype about kpop. No song could replace or has the same vibe as growl at least for me till today. It just one and only song. Simple. Oneshoot video. 1 place and 1 camera to shoot. Dominant blue white color, and only wear uniform. Simple music but yeah less is more. More memorable.
Exo is one if not the most loved kpop group in China. Usually the most of the sells are from that country, they love exo. But they stopped exo-M bc there's no more chinese members apart of Lay and he isn't active as a member. But most important bc SM sucks. We love cherries they are the best ❤
Actually Exo mv's views in china is same as the number of views nowadays to new popular boy group views. Chinese exols has a different streaming platform.

overdose was my very first song and my introduction to EXO and it was this song that made me an Exol and also was the song i chose my bias which was and still is to this day DO
In growl and overdose you can see they start separated but eventually come together in the choreography,right? It means the forces needed to reunite, there's some theories about the red hat, but the only one i can confirm is that in overdose they're closed by the red force (i said that they're represented as a cube or a red color, and in this moment there's these two things, the big white cube where they are, and the red light's coming sometimes, representing the danger), and in love me right you can see these things too, and some signals off hallucinogens, they seems so confused,so much things happening, cause they're sended to the earth as humans, to forget why they're here, and has some conflicts of identity (the same scenario,but changing into red and white color)
Every music video released by EXO is part of the storyline, even simple songs like Growl. In Love Me Right they're in another universe in which they play the role of football players, watch the Ultimate Guide to EXO which explains it in brief. Even solo projects from the members play part in the storyline, whether that be using their superpower or just the video itself. EXO'S the first ever group to come up with a storyline and has managed to keep including it. (Sometimes in live performances too)

Exo tiene la mayor fanbase en china y se quedó Exo uniendo a ambas unidades K y m, con la salida de lo 3 miembros chinos se unificaron a Exo, el único miembro chino es Lay, se sabe que lo 3 que salieron fue por problemas con la empresa, actualmente Exo se conforma x 9 miembros, pero Lay esta más activo en china y por que el es el embajador de la juventud o algo a si no puede promocionar con ellos por los problemas políticos entre países, el fandon espera que el grupo esté de regreso en 2025 o 26, por ahora ya los últimos 2 miembro de Exo Kai y Sehun están en servicio militar , el 14 de abril se reunirán con fans para celebrar otro año con Exo-L y están en actividades en solitario su música es muy diversa al igual cada miembro tiene su estilo y se disfruta
Lay ya no es miembro de EXO. En 2022 se le termino el contrato con SM

Es más cuando dejo la SM saco una canción en solitario que empieza con las voces de los chicos saludándolo por teléfono...

In EXO group, all members of the group can sing rap in addition to vocals, which means that all members of the EXO group are both rappers and vocalists.
I first got acquainted with K*pop a year ago... I think the difference between K*pop and other music is in the dance. K*pop is famous for its dances. When I got to know K*pop, I first watched the music video and K*pop dance is attractive to me. And the next step was to look at the meaning of that song and if the meaning and dance of that music was good, I would listen to that music... until I met E*xo. For me, E*xo is music without subtitles, which means I don't need to know the meaning. I don't have their lyrics, I just enjoy listening to their beautiful voice and wonderful music. Whenever I want to see K*pop or listen to it, I listen to other groups' music or watch other groups' music videos. But whenever I want to listen to really good music, I only listen to E*XO.
E*XO has everything I like and expect from a very good music. E*XO dances very well and skillfully. E*XO has meaningful and beautiful music. E*XO has the best and most important characteristic of a singer group, which is the ability to sing. E*XO has the 8 best singers in K*orea. The 8 best vocalists in the history of K*pop. 8 vocalists and rappers. That means all the members can rap in addition to vocals. The power of the notes and the magical voice of E*XO members is not in any group. When they start singing, I am with myself. I say, are they really normal people? How can they sing so well and powerfully? It's as if they are extraterrestrial with a voice that comes from heaven.
E*XO can perform live music in such a way that you scream with excitement and surprise. They sing so strong and well that recently they protested to them not to perform live music so much and not to show off your good voice. In addition to singing, they are actors. They are also very good. In fact, E*XO are the most talented and best singers, actors, dancers, and models in the K*pop and K*drama industry... I admire many groups besides EXO and I like their music, such as Stray Kids, Ateez, seventeen, TXT, TNX, NCT, Black Pink, TWICE, Girls Generation, BTS, and... but E*XO is an unrepeatable legend in the K*pop music industry. This talented group It has the best members, especially the talent of singing, acting, dancing, and modeling.
E*XO deserves to be called the king/emperor of K*pop.
They merge both languages in their live performances btw. There's a My Lady performance where they sang in both korean and mandarin.

It is true that especially in the Korean versions the main rappers are Chanyeol and Sehun, but also rapping in other songs Lay, Kai and Xiumin, even Baekhyun or D.O have rapped in some songs...
I've always thought that Exo have more mature sounding songs. Exo are one of my fav groups. Chanyeol is my bias. For some reason I really like the mv for Love Me Right. Exo always have amazing songs

5:03 So, EXO *DID* do this~ Often, when they had stages with both EXO-K & EXO-M they would sing the first verse in whatever language was dominate where they were (if they were China, they would sing the first verse in Mandarin/Chinese), then they'd switch to the other language during the next verse, and then finally back to whatever language they started the performance in. During all this, they'd be switching in and out the members (usually a group of 6 at a time, on stage), and during the final part all the members would take the stage together^.^
Suho, I believe, once said they had something like 13 different choreos for some of their title tracks because of all the different versions of the song, including remixes & versions with added dance breaks; PLUS different versions depending on different number of members and what country they're performing in~~~ This led to some funny moments, like an Overdose stage where Kai was supposed to exit after the first part, but stayed on stage and continued dancing for a good bit before he noticed the EXO-M members^.^
EXO albums at this time actually included *2 versions of the title track song on each version of the album* One with all members and one that is either EXO-K only or EXO-M only depending on which version of the album you buy (Korean or Chinese) Meaning there are 4 studio versions of Growl~
On the Korean version:
- 12 members all singing in Korean
- EXO-K members only
On the Chinese version:
- 12 members all singing in Chinese
- EXO-M members only
At some of their early concerts they'd perform some songs in Korean (sometimes just the EXO-K members) and then other songs would be done in Chinese (sometimes just the EXO-M members)~~~

Haha I like how you mentioned doing both chinese and korean in the same song cuz, though they didn't ever do that for a studio version, back in 2012, since they were still in exo-k and exo-m, if both groups were performng together, they would split the song and so some parts would be korean and some chinese...kinda like in overdose when exo-m came in for the second verse and chorus, thats hat they did in live but they would actually sing in chinese. Exo-K and Exo-M aren't only the group names, when it comes to music videos Exo-K means that you're watching the Korean version of the song while Exo-M means that you're watching Mandarian version of the song. China is still Exo's biggest fanbase, they have their own apps to stream through because YT is banned in China. Some of Exo's mvs have already exceed 1B views on their own apps.
Growl didn't just make Exo popular but it also became second national anthem in Korea. There's a saying that if you don't know Growl them you're a spy from another country. TVXQ's Mirotic, Super Junior's Sorry Sorry and Exo's Growl are still the most popular songs of all time in Korea. The members actually merged together in Wolf not Growl and Exo-K versions are all sung in Korean while Exo-M versions are sung in Mandarin.
