The greatest rock song of the 20th Century inspired by the greatest book of the 20th Century- it has so many Tolkien references- "when I look to the west and my spirit is crying for leaving" is an allusion to the desire of the Elves (including Galadriel) to return to Valinor. Robert Plant has admitted on a number of occasions the profound influence that reading Lord of the Rings had on him and it's not the only Zeppelin song with explicit references- there are many more.

Die hard Led Zeppelin fans have been trying to figure out the concept of this song since it was recorded in 1968. It really doesn't need interpretation. Sometimes a song doesn't need explanation. Would you try and interpret Chopin, Bach, Mozart, or Beethoven? No. This song has been and will always be Led Zeppelin's masterpiece. It is their Mona Lisa, Starry Night or Sistine Chapel. No words can describe it except "Masterpiece".

I envy people listening to Zeppelin or Pink Floyd for the first time. They don’t realize they just had a life-changing experience.
Please listen to the Heart live tribute version of this song. It is also incredible.

Very few singers have the power and range this song requires. Ann Wilson is, very happily, one of the exceptions.

These were just really good songs that played on the radio. Our parents grew up on 50's music and thought this music was the devil. We had no idea that these songs would still be around 50 years later and being enjoyed by the internet generations. This is truly an amazing time we live in. Glad to have seen it.

Simply the best rock band ever…..this will be played at my funeral, love it. Judging from your reaction, you love that as well. Now, look up heart paying tribute at Led Zeppelin induction to rock hall of fame. For your info, if you do, the drummer is Bonzo’s son.

Led Zeppelin delivered this song to the public in 1971 ... imagine yourself today but back in 1971 hearing this song for the first time. Then imagine yourself, as a black woman back in 1971, having to ride at the back of bus, not being allowed to eat at a cafeteria in Woolworths, listening to this song for the first time. Ooh, it makes me wonder .... really makes me wonder.

It just gets better every time you re-listen to it because each time you anticipate what's coming you hear something new that catches you off guard and takes you on a whole new trip - I've been re listening to this song for decades and each time it just get better, richer. I urge you to look up the bootleg studio sessions (antrabata i think it's called) where you can hear them build stairway up from scratch trying out different riffs, drums beats, lyrics, everything, until you see how they approached perfection. And then when you hear the full song the next time a few months later you just "get" how good it is even more. It's an amazing experience.
If you want other well-constructed music by Led Zeppelin I recommend:
    Achilles Last Stand
    In my Time of Dying
    Ramble On
    Babe I'm Gonna Leave You
    Dazed and Confused
    Kashmir
My personal Led Zeppelin fav: Listen with bass on high on good speakers
    When the Levee Breaks
and remember - it's important to relisten to these songs over time to get the real intended experience. That's how they were constructed. months of relistening and adding layers.

Feel sorry for the kids today that will never have over 50 years of this kind of music to listen to and re-live as they get old like me. Every note, every inflection of his voice is SO ingrained in those of us of a certain age that I feel it’s a part of our DNA.
