The more I watch the 79 Steelers the more I appreciate them. Most key players were Past their prime. They had a ton of injuries all season. They had a major turnover problem. Yet they still managed to win the SB by double digits. One thing I noticed watching this season..when the Steelers didn’t turn over the ball a lot.they usually blew people out. I remember this day. I was expecting a tough game but it wasn’t so I got to go out afterwards and play some sandlot football on an unusually perfect November day.
During that 1979 season, Pittsburgh had a run where they demoralized the Broncos (42-7), Cowboys (14-3), Redskins (38-7) and Chiefs (30-3), outscoring those 4 teams 124-20
In 1979, CBS still had their main cameras all at the 50 yard line, and they were used even when play went down to one end of the field or the other. By then, NBC and ABC had put cameras on the 20 or 25 yard lines to be the main camera when play got down to those ends of the field. CBS would adopt this system in 1981.
Redskin fan here. I keep trying to watch this because the visuals are fantastic but I just can't finish it. Even though, this game and the 1980 season helped to get Joe Gibbs to Washington, it's still too painful.
Chuck Noll was definitely ahead of the curve in his prime. He recognized the Steelers needed to open up the offense with the new rule changes in 1978. Bradshaw had an MVP season that year and was top tier in 1979 also
@@chrisuncleahmad666 The Steelers had an awesome 6-7 game stretch in 1979 where they just dominated their opponents, including this 10-win Redskins team...
@@michaelbanaszak7775 it was a 4 week stretch starting with the MNF game vs Denver. Steelers put a beatdown on the Broncos 42-7, the next week 14-3 over Dallas, then this destruction of Washington, and then 30-3 on the road at Kansas City. The following week the team flew to San Diego tired and exhausted, And it showed in their lackluster performance: 9 turnovers, and a 35-7 loss
Pittsburgh currently has a 6 game winning streak against the Washington Football Team dating back to 1997. Hopefully the Steelers make it 7 straight tonight!
The Raiders hurt them in '76. Beat them in the regular season, then stopped the Steelers' 9 game winning streak where they outscored their opponents 274-42. I'll give you '77, though they had a lot of injuries in '79 as well.

Keep in mind that the cowboys were 11-5, and the redskins and broncos were both 10-6
Terry Bradshaw said it best:”I’d hate to play us.”
I watched this game on TV. Thanks for the memories.
I believe Curt Gowdy went into semi-retirement after Super Bowl XIII (which he called for NBC), but did a handful of NFL games for CBS in 1979.
To put some perspective on this game:
PIT beat WAS by 31 points (38-7)
Washington’s other 5 losses that season were by a combined 26 points.
Good points
Talk about choking

That's because Sumner Rothstein (oh, excuse me, Sumner Redstone) didn't want to spring for additional cameras.
Nobody looks as good in a Pittsburgh Steelers uniform as Jack Lambert.

U said it wow!!! HAIL!!!
Cowboy Curt and The Little General in the broadcast booth.
whats amazing by watching these games from the 1970's was how bad the field goal kicking was....today they just boom them through in most cases....

Pittsburgh's last victory over Washington until 1997. Steelers lost 3 straight to the Redskins in 1985, 88, and 91
Those wins by the Redskins were the only wins over the Steelers since the 1960s.

Have you heard anything about Washington's team being renamed the Washington Americans?

This happened to be the day that Iran seized our hostages.
I suspect that part of halftime was taken up by a CBS News Special Report on the seizure of the embassy.
@@altfactor I am not so sure. I remember this game and I think I first heard of the seizure was during an evening newscast that day or the next.
4th and 20 Thiesman sweep?
Any idea who the color commentator is? Lindsey Nelson? At 6:30 Gowdy calls him Henry. Hank Stram?
Yes, that is Hank Stram. He teamed up with Vin Scully to call the Cowboys-49ers championship game from 1981.

Steelers could have easily won 6 superbowls in a row if injuries didn't hurt them in 76 and 77
