🤍🎧🤍 Yass it’s still, one of my personal inspiring, uplifting, and encouraging songs to listen to. Loved it, since I was a child in the nineties, now in my mid thirties still love it.❤️🩹🎧❤️🩹
@3:00 this is my biggest issue with "urban" radio and BET. somebody, somewhere made a decision black music is rap, R&B, and gospel. anyone who doesnt fit those categories is too pop or too white.
@@cyshadowxCouldn’t agree more.💯 Personally so over the ignorant stereotypes, and prejudices at time within the specific/particularly at times black community.🫤 Music to me is universal not categorized to one specific ethnic group, or community. In my personal opinion…

Every time I hear the You Gotta Be song I can't help but smile. It brings back good memories of being a kid. We didn't have much but we never went without. It reminds me of how much my mom fought to give us a good life.
Respect to Des'ree. years after You Gotta Be was relased, my elementary school graduation class had to sing it, and some of the lyrics were changed, they brought in a choir direct with great piano playing skills. I get a little emotionaly everytime I hear You Gotta Be.
Des’ree gave us some great singles❣️❣️❣️ the remixes of “You Gotta Be” are next level, her work with Trent D’Arby & Babyface are of the quality & stature that an artist only dreams of being part of… thank you for the great sounds - & the life of toast lyric 😂
Ugh!!! Also one of my absolute favs. Really made 14-year-old me further internalize the toxic dynamic of R&J as “just passionate”, and “Its not love if I’m not loved like that” … No babygirl, just no 🙃
This grew my respect for her & Janet and increased my disdain for the other one who is known for stealing lyrics, samples, choreography, etc. Des'ree was labeled all those things, but they never expected a newcomer (especially under a shady contract) to stand strong and be truthful without being hateful. Good on her for that and keeping her life private!
Yay! A HAPPIER story. Glad Des'ree is STILL here! Mind Adventures and I Ain't Movin' are surefire hits! 🔥 ❤ Hopefully, she and Janet are over their beef by now. I love them both! But, Des'ree did have a point. I ADORE both songs. But, Got Til It's Gone does sound somewhat like Feel So High. Glad Des'ree received the credit she deserves whether it be from Janet or Beyoncé. Kissing You is the PERFECT wedding song. Laughter is a STUNNING piano driven ballad. Des'ree is a LEGEND!❤❤❤❤❤
I just started listening to Des’ree again recently, and her music is so healing. I Ain’t Movin’ is an album that’s as relevant now as it is then. Tracks like “You Gotta Be” and “Crazy Maze” are essentials, and “Livin’ In The City” is my personal favorite. ❤️
Never forget when they used to play You Gotta be on PBS Kids and Fred Rogers, Levar Burton, Jamie Lee Curtis and Lois from Malcolm in the Middle appeared in the promo
...she was ALWAYS....A CLASSY LADY...with great songs and visual presentation....and for not ONE...BUT TWO of the BIGGEST women in the business to appropriate her work is VERY TELLING...i know that she will always be set up for the rest of her life from her ROYALTIES...i am glad her story is being told and she decided to just live a well funded private...that her TRUE TALENT and NATURAL BEAUTY GAINED HER...and that she EXPOSED THE MUSIC INDUSTRY while she was at it....
Her song, 'You Gotta Be' is the only one from her that I'm familiar with. In fact, I'm not sure if I ever knew who the artist was that sung it, but i used to really like that song, nonetheless. I'm glad this video was made because I haven't heard that song in years and I learned something about an artist I'm not familiar with. Now I'm about to find her song on RUclips and jam to it. I'll probably purchase the MP3 track as a show of support to the artist and my respect and love for good, quality old-school music.
I've always hated how we limit each other with that stupid, "not Black enough" bullshit. What makes us as a race great is that we are in just about EVERYTHING in the world! Yet, we all must be seen in such narrow ways? It's pathetic. It's so wrong. We are in hockey, we like NASCAR, we have invented and/or started so many things that are considered actually "White" that Black people don't even realize how much we've touched. I mean, if we even talk a particular way that's not like hood or whatever, you're not Black enough. We destroy each other on such stupid things. It's no wonder unity is one of the hardest things in our race. We're too busy telling each other what they should or shouldn't be.
As much as she is missed and I would have loved more music from her in the 2000s and 2010s, I understand her walking away from the spotlight, which is so toxic and draining. Props to her for putting herself first.
Once again, "colorism" strikes. Absolutely disgusting. Her music was indeed different than what was being played on the radio back in the day, yet it deserved to be played on all stations playing pop, R&B, Urban, college, etc. "You Gotta Be" has been on my faves list for almost 30 years!
Her music sounded like a lot of music in the 90s: Sade, Cece Peniston, etc. It has nothing to do with colorism. I know many of us who love Desiree's music.
@@blackcherry6877 Sade didn't get played on Urban or R&B stations, and neither did CeCe Peniston. CeCe's music was on the dance/house charts, and Sade's music ended up on Adult Easy Listening stations. I remember this because I got my FCC radio operator's license in 1985, and I was doing side consulting with radio stations during the 90s.
My hidden knowledge of artists you do episodes on gives me a huge ego and serotonin boost 😂 the name won’t sound familiar but for some odd reason I know exactly what song was their debut or most popular at the time. Most of these are from my childhood (I’m 35) so I love having a trivia game with myself 😂❤
Great video man I wish her, babyface and Sananda Maitreya would of made an album together also is it just me or does she sould like anata baker but you can understand her.
my happiest moment was when i did a deep dive into des'ree's discography. everyone talks about "you gotta be" but she has so many other songs. her timeless songs like: indigo daisies, life, i ain't movin', crazy maze, feel so high, etc are my faves. she deserves so much recognition. she is old enough to be my mom. yet her music continues to be great representation for conscious afro-caribbean and avid soul listeners like myself. 🤎 #fellowscorpio ♏
Sade shouldn’t be out in the same category with Seal and Des’ree. They are both are unique good artists , as well as Sade’ but she has never been considered a sellout to some , this is news to me.
You Gotta Be is easily in my top 10 favorite songs of all time
That’s the only song I know from her 😅😮🫣

Love Des’ree! ‘You Gotta Be’ transcends time. Positive message ❤give her, her flowers 💐
I absolutely love that song!!! Core memory of me going to school listening to that song in my walkman! Those were the days!!!

Yep
You Gotta Be is my theme song to this day!!! Those people saying she wasn't black enough were straight up haters...
I grew up listening to Des'ree. She definitely is one of the artists who helped shaped 90s music. I hope she is well and living her best life!
You Gotta Be is her best special song in this history. This bop never gets old!

Stunning Woman. Her energy reminds me of Tems. 😊✨️
I always thought she was so naturally pretty 😍. I love how she has stayed true to herself. She will always persevere. 🧡
I kind of love it for her that she chose to have a low-key life. And she gave us some great music, anyway.
Most artists wished they could have done it like her.
I think artists should get off social medias altogether. They’re messy, there’s no more mystery
I love Des’ree. I love her music, her vibes, her way of life, living a private life, etc. She’s beautiful.
Love her too since the 1990s.
Des'ree's beauty is nearly indescribable. But her talent even trumps that. Feel So High is such an awesome song that I'll love forever.

“Feel So High” is my favorite by Des’Ree. Such a beautiful record. Her music is so intricate. 💙
