    Hey Navid, I remember violonists using chalk to increase their pegs' friction. :)
    Love what you do in the beginning!
    Take care !

    I'm learning Baroque lute for the first time, and love that it was inspired by the oud so all your videos are helping me start! More content to learn from!

    Good thing I found this video! I recently bought an oud and have been frustrated, thinking it's broken... even started considering taking it to a luthier to see if they could maybe replace the tuning pegs with guitar tuning pegs or something, which scared me because I imagine it'd cost as much as the oud itself (if it'd even be possible).
    If it's lack of humidity that causes the pegs to come loose, I suppose in the summer it'll be less of an issue? Because as it is now in spring, some of the strings on the oud I got won't stay in tune for even one minute. I tried pushing and turning the pegs at the same time, but they still plop loose. Another issue is that one of the strings keeps popping out of the groove in the nut, so I imagine it will be necessary to do something about that, though... (it also has a little crack in the headstock, but it seems shallow enough that I doubt it'll be a problem at least in the immediate future)

      I'm glad you found it helpful. If the nut is causing problems that could be an easier fix. But if you take it to a luthier don't take it to a guitar repair. Take it to a violin repair shop. They are less afraid of tankering with Ouds.

    I'm an oud player living in the US, originally from Mexico. Love your channel by the way! I use to have peg problem but it's also because I use to leave so much string on the peg. I learned from your restring video that I don't need all the extra string. Which brand do you recommend? I use la Bella and also pyramid.

      I like D'addario, Aquila, La Bella, Daniel Mari, Pyramid to name a few. I haven't used Pyramid in a very long time.

    Thanks for your nice videos. I hope you make a video about how to record playing oud with good quality of sound and sound effects in addition to recommending some mics types to use.

    Hi Navid. I have question.
    I know that there are different types of ouds. Turkish ones, Arabic ones, etc... I am a fan of Andalusi classical music. Do you perhaps know wether a specific type of oud is used for Andalusi music? Maybe a Moroccan oud? Is there even a difference between a Moroccan or "Arabic Oud" from (say) Lebanon or something?

    • @OudforGuitarists
      @OudforGuitarists  5 лет назад +4

      The differences between ouds are often subtle. But some ouds do sound better for certain musics. Any oud will function for andalusi music. An advanced musician may have their own preferences for oud sound depending on their style. But to be simple I would recommend a "fixed bridge" oud tuned "do-do" as opposed to a "floating bridge" oud tuned "fa-fa".

    I think they expand or shrink due to weather change. I believe this is the new turkish oud you just received, sounds good.

      Exactly, the humidity change. I've had this Oud now for about a year so still fairly new. I'm glad you think it sounds good.

    Why not using geared pegs?

    • @OudforGuitarists
      @OudforGuitarists  Год назад

      Geared pegs tend to not suite the traditional aesthetic beauty of ouds, and also they need to be lightweight to balance the instrument. Pegs are good when made well.

    • @stavrosk.2868
      @stavrosk.2868 Год назад

      I'm a beginner on the lute and I already found out that the friction pegs have a life of their own. If I'll order a lute, it will have geared pegs. Why pay 3000 or more euros if the instrument is out of tune most of the time? There are manufacturers that produce pegs with the gears hidden inside which offer great tuning comfort. So why not?

    • @OudforGuitarists
      @OudforGuitarists  Год назад

      @@stavrosk.2868 Well some oud players do order wittner or peghead geared pegs. It's just not a standard practice in building ouds. The oud building industry is a bit old fashioned in this regard, and the cost to install them is not easy to swallow for the majority of oud players in the middle east. It's not Europe. Even Turkey which arguably has the best workshops doesn't use geared pegs as standard. They can't afford it. Once the standards get higher with time I'm sure this will change though.
