@pojo1010 A reason to not change something can't be "its always been like" as that is no reason at all. You need to argue what does it serve? Why does hockey have a fighting culture when other team sports do not? I have played competitive hockey all my life and I have watched a lot guys who have 9-5 jobs get so hurt over nothing because of this "culture" It has nothing to do with the game.

@@jasonlihou5026You dont get it. Hockey and fighting go hand in hand, its one in the same, fighting IS part of the sport. I agree with you that its stupid that guys in gentlemens leagues fight, but this is not rec hockey, its the NHL, this IS their job. This is what puts food on their table, and some guys fight. Some guys never would have had a career in the NHL if not for fighting.
You can not like it all you want, but you know whats far more dangerous than a fight??
      A hard hit.
Would you like to remove hitting too? What does it serve? Why do you need to hit at all?? I thought this was hockey?

It's easy to get caught up in the emotion of watching the game and see the fights he's had, and cheer as the guys are slugging each other, but I still hold my breath anytime I see a guy get taken down like he has in his last two. He's young, he's big, and probably feels indestructible. But knowing what we know now about CTE, seeing the massive impact it's had on the quality of life for enforcers that had to retire early, it's hard not to imagine a worst case scenario for this kid.

Think about the end game if everyone is tame all the time. I mean in all aspects of life throughout history. Think about where that leads us. Is humanity really doomed to sitting dormant all day with only video games for entertainment as they slowly remove risk from everything in society? I would 100% accept getting punched in the head and suffering as life went on if it meant my family never struggled or went without. Do you think anybody would ever go watch junior hockey if there was no fighting? Hockey on its own is not enough to keep people entertained. Should we also limit race cars to to 40km/hr so they don't crash? People watch racing for crashes, people watch hockey for the chance to see skill and a bit of violence. Not every team has a superstar, which means they need other ways to fill the house.

We don't know much about CTE. For all we know, you may be born with CTE and are more suceptible to concussions as a result. If you only cut open the brains of people with dementia, than you won't know what causes the dementia. But it seems many people who did not play professional sports and did not get numerous concussions get dementia.

The one thing I find staggering about what Gino said, and I agree with most of it, is that he seems to assume the league cares if he gets hurt. If you believe the league cares, I have some property in the mud flats you may want. I've seen players get drilled head first into the boards, and only a minor penalty called. The NHL Pretends to care, but like our government, the only thing they care about is their pocket books and their positions of power. I hope this Rempe kid doesn't pay a horrible price.

yes, i like to watch the fights overall. But the reality is that 3 fights in 5 games is not a great trend. Especially since he almost struck his head twice. There is a correlation between blows to the head and CTE. And having a tough guy on the ice does not deter the stars from getting hurt. Bedard still had his jaw broken, makar still got 2 concussions in 2 weeks. Its time for the head coach to step in and tell him to take it down a notch on the pre-planned fights.

As he starts to get hit by younger more seasoned players the concussions will come more frequently he’ll be missing more and more games. NYR may resign him but he’ll be lucky to make $1.5m. By the end of season 5 he’ll have never proved he has what it takes in the league. He’ll be out on waivers and play the rest of his short career in the AHL until his CTEs are too significant to play.

Don’t want to fight then don’t, his choice not yours. Want to fight? Then fight, and live with the consequences and or benefits of again… his choice/decision. The game is probably the ultimate blend of speed, skill, hitting, toughness , and even violence. “Toning down” any one of those aspects would greatly take away what makes this game so great. Undeserving? Bud, fighting is and ALWAYS WILL BE part of the sport. Obviously the kid does not need to answer the bell EVERY night... but this is going to happen. If you can't accept the fighting aspect of the sport, maybe it's you that needs to move on and find something else. They are willing participants, they make their own decisions. If they decide to fight and a fan enjoys it that doesn't make said fan "undeserving". If they fight they fight and we accept that because that's the way it is and HAS to be. Enforcers enforce for a reason. You can't let everybody on the ice get away with bs all night without any consequence. Hockey is different from other sports in that way... they govern themselves on the ice to make sure certain skaters don't take advantage. Reaves chased Rempe down all night... Rempe then looked to his bench and they gave the green light. Was he supposed to keep letting Reaves punk him all night? You don't respond he then thinks he can get away with whatever he wants on the ice. It's always been this way.

He did not come up to fight but to give the rangers a physical presence. Think back to 1974 when Dave Schultz beat the living daylights out of Dale Rolfe. And the Rangers stood by and watched. Or two years ago when Tom Wilson beat up on Artemi Panarin. As long as this kid is on the ice we will never be beaten up again. The fights will eventually subside. Guys like Xhekaj,Rempe the emergence of physical playoff hockey and what you need to win cup. Is great exspecially in USA will get more non hockey fans into the game.
I know people would rather have a bottom 6 skilled player now but look at past cup winners they don't have 5'7/5'9 165pounds in the bottom 6.
    They have Marroons,Perry,Kolesar,Stephenson,Nichushkin,Schenn,Coleman.
It be great if we could go back to having 6ft 200plus pound 3rd/4th liners who fight, hit, add offense, like Lowry,Anderson,Wilson,Laughton of the world.
Another position that almost has gone extinct is the hard nosed, tough, stay at home dman like Weber,Jackman,Orpik,Methot,Gudas,Chara,Pronger,McCabe,Phaneuf,Morris,Foote,Bieksa,Reghr,Hatcher every team wishes they had dmen like that today.
The players have a good medical package even if ltir, done with hockey, they go through concussion protocol. People like Gino need to stop with this clearly bias take.
Would you rather fight and be called up making league min or few million like Reaves or be making 50/60k in AHL...its best all round
I personally can't stand clean hits people who watch now under 22yrs old not being taught how to brace/protect yourself growing up and players who shouldn't be in NHL on 4th lines.

As for Rempe i think he's following the Tom Wilson model. Tom fought his way onto the caps, and is now a core figure and future Captain. I remember the early days of Tom, he had pretty much the same story as Rempe. He was fighting all the time his rookie year and then showed people he has skill and then he said how at some point he realized he didn't have to fight everyone. Like he had a choice. The game has increased penalties and changed protocols to protect players' safety, especially in relation to head injuries, yet we still allow, and glorify fighting, which is essentially about deliberately trying to injure your opponent's head.
We know that enforcers pay a heavy price for their role. The average enforcer dies 10 years sooner than the average player, often tragically.

He’s a complete breath of fresh air. Made me realize how much I miss real fights in hockey. Just look at the UFC it’s growing like crazy. If anything the league need to design a helmet with a quick release visor. That way guys aren’t breaking fingers/hans on the visors or trying to throw them off their heads during the fight

Rempe won against Deslauriers though. He has 2 points in 2 games. He’s living his dream, and I love this kid.

@@jasonholloway2684I disagree. That was a great fight. Did you see Deslauriers face afterwords? I will say though, this video is spot on and I feel for this kid. I don’t want another Derek Boogaard type situation to happen again.

Very well said. We don't need a Belak or Boogaard ending to this kids career. He has a role but playing hockey must come first. Probert was a goal scorer and "tough" guy. But he also had his demons. Rempe must walk a very fine line to have a long career. Good luck, kid. Hope to see you in the league for a long time.

Yeah no. This brings me back to watching hockey back in the day. I think it’s great for the game that we’re seeing an up tick in the amount of tilts recently

This guy has a point, and explains it in a way even the most diehard pro hockey fight fans can understand. Fighting every night against guys trying to prove their worth towards the end of their careers is unsustainable. I would agree that his coach needs to intervene and refocus Remke to improve his hockey skills, with less emphasis on fighting.
Not that fighting won't happen. Just less of it with this particular guy. (But maybe this will shift the tides toward more fights, again. Yeah!)

There's nothing to talk about here. The kid wanted his spot on the team and he got it! Everybody knows why he got the spot, it's not his stickhandling skills right?
There's a 100 guys just like him waiting in line to fill their lifelong dream of playing in the NHL!
Stop fucking speculating what can happen, Rempe doesn't care! He just wants to play hockey in the best league in the world.

I think you raise an important point Paisan and it needs to be addressed for sure. I think your being a little unfair as the Kid held his own in every fight which of course is not the point, Noted. Like all new things this too will get old as what I think is happening like in so many things off the ice people are nostalgic for a different time. I respect and agree with your thinking, yes this is a dangerous business however as I previously stated it will I believe and hope wind down. The worst thing that can happen besides what seems to be a decent kid getting his head cracked is some other kid tries to emulate him and spawns a fighting fad that will drive the social networks straight to the bank which will in turn perpetuate an all hell breaks through senario, exactly what we don't want. Part of it I believe is he plays in NYC the media capital of the planet which of course magnifies everything (see Linsanity). I am hopeful this is a passing fancy and all will return to "normal" and the kid becomes a decent player and above all else remains healthy and happy.
