Painting Anime Background From Photo

- Repainting one of my photo into makoto shinkai anime style background art. This color palette is mostly seen in his earlier films. Most of the painting are done using default photoshop round brush and chalk brush with some settings adjustment.

first thing i do when i do this is to apply a shadows/highlight filters to lower contrast and bring up detail in shadow, then a massive "reduce noise" filter to smooth out high frequency detail (and noise on the shadows you brought up). then adjust the saturation and that's 80% of the way (look-wise). then you do some brush stuff to accentuate edges and details (which are mostly gone because of heavy-handed noise reduction) and tweak things further and you're done.
Similar to matte painting but more to animation style kind of look

The amount of tutorial blogs and videos on how to do this, I still don't have a clue. The best I can do is apply a dry brush filter over the original photo then do colour grading lol. I suck.

Wow, this is like a reverse technique of drawing. Normally people just imitate the real image to produce a reference of it.

I remember when clouds were this real... natural and beautiful... now the clouds are flat and straight snd sprayed into the sky while their chemicals fall upon the land and people and destroy the surrounding life.

You should look up Makoto Shinkai, he made more than one film. If you want to learn more about how anime is made, Shirobako is a fun watch.

If you are painting over a photo, you should call it a photobashing. And of course, give the author proper credits. If you do that and don't use other person's work (photos in this case) to make profit, don't worry. Every art form is valid. ;)
@@dreamshorizon3093 it's like speedediting the the background and also giving credit to the original photographer. I see where those people got the idea from
If you painted over it, and didn't just use a filter, then nobody has any right to say anything to you. Is it cheating? Debatable. If you had the image to one side and painted it whilst looking at it, the result would be largely the same, so who gives a shit?

Did you know that now youtube had a feature called "playback speed"?
I don't support this actually. The most use simple overdrawn photos without taking care of copyrights or giving credits. If they would all use their own made photos it's debatable (still is overdraw something of course cheaper tactic than drawing it full without ref) but the most just take random google photos and put it through a filter overdraw a bit and getting thousands of good credits for the "amazing backgrounds" they "drew" . At least you modified here a lot with own elements but sadly the most I know don't do this.
He took these photos himself he had said it. At the end of the day it's just art and painting over photos should not be off limits just because a group of people don't like it. It's simply just different methods. To me it's just an extreme case of "your cheating because your using a ruler and I draw all my lines freehand." At the end of the day they're all just tools.
nice overpainting/tracing, it does look great in the end, but now try doing that without tracing the photo maybe? I mean you would look at the photo and recreate it, you know like a real artist does it. this is not how they paint anime backgrounds at all btw. dont get me wrong, like I said, the result looks great, but if you used that in a game or animation the photographer could sue you since it is the same photo in everyway, they would line up perfectly if partialy transparent. this is against copyright laws and is not fair use according to as supreme courts. so if you are just doing this for fun that is fine, if you are doing this for a project that you will sell, then it is very not legal and would get you sued. in the end this really is nothing more than tracing in color.
