Was learning this song some years ago when my 18 y.o. daughter's new 18 y.o. boyfriend came to visit and meet her parents for the first time. He asked if he could see my guitar, which was on it's stand at the time - I said sure. Strummed it once and started playing this very song...alot smoother than I could, mind you. "Ok you can date my daughter." The following Christmas he gave me his Epiphone LPS. I let him continue to date her. They broke up after three or four years and have recently begun talking again...I'm waiting to hear what's in his inventory nowadays before I offer an opinion...😎 In all seriousness though - I'd like to see them together again. He's still family.
I learned this is standard tuning when I was 16 (in 1984). Didn’t know it was in another tuning! Got it sounding pretty close, but it took some tricky work
Me too, 2004, i was 23. I didnt know you have to change tuning, but I was sure to miss something. When I knew the right tuning, i learn in a hour by ear. I discover the world of tune changing with this masterpiece
Has to be 1 of my favourite openings to play on a guitar,I can't think of any other chord that captures the mood so much,I love the anticipation throughout the song, stunning 👌✌️
Such a beautiful song. My first guitarist rob played this for me. And ive always thought of him strumming up when i hear it. Im in my late fall. Springtimes come and gone.
This song always gives me hope for something better. Tomorrow's anniversary is a reminder of that. The lesson is as good as when you did it back in 13' (minus the rain outdoors of course). Fantastic. The HOTH version in 7 minutes and 32 seconds is an equivalent Opus to the entire Abbey Road album. TSRTS version should be translated into other languages to help heal the world's wounds. Practicing for just 6 months, I'd hope to be able to crank out "If I Had A Hammer"... Thanks always.
Yeah... This what it's about JJ. A truly amazing piece of work in this this song. I learned to play this a few years ago and had forgotten how beautifully sounding these chords are. Time to retune. Thank you Mr James....
James. Thank you for all your time and effort breaking this down. I never thought I could play this 20yrs ago. The tuning is awesome. I found myself going off track and finding melodic dissident fingerings. My dove had been in the case to long. (I damaged my hand with a saw.) You have really inspired me. In a month I'm leaps and bounds over where I was 10 years ago. The way you rip through this stuff. Good ear. Excellent teaching. Please leave PT up good stuff. Hope your shoulder is 100% Cheers
You mentioned the Unleded version. That is one of my favorite version of this song. That finger picked coda and Page's smile at the end were priceless. Another great lesson. This is another one of Page at the apex of his creative genius.
It’s simply Incredible how much and how varied musical ground Jimmy Page covered in what was really quite a short space of time, an incredible Talent he was an still is by today’s standards and he must be getting close to 80 years old, most musicians today could spend a lifetime just trying to figure out what he done in about 10 years and then still not do it as well as him and on top of that we must remember he actually came up with this stuff 😳⭐️🌞
I’m a pretty good player now after a little over 10 years playing. I’ve stopped watching anyone else’s guitar instruction videos besides this guy, whoever he is. Thanks for all your efforts.
Loved the comment you made . There is always some a-hole on every video that says “oh I’ve only been playing for (fill in the bs ) - -and I can play blah blah. If only they would go away . great teaching and taste in music . Thanks .
Great lesson, James, on such a timeless and beautiful song. Even just the first strum alone is packed with emotion. Also, I have to give a huge round of applause for your t-shirt! Brings me back, my friend, brings me back.
Outstanding commentary regarding the tuning and slowing down the tape and contrasting that with the tuning during live performances! That, my friend, is why I keep coming back to your channel.
They’d also play that tuning live because Page would only have to change the tuning of 2 stings. G->A and B->D. Since he would play that on the 6 string portion of the double neck it would make it easier to tune back to standard tuning for Stairway. They’d only have to tune those two strings back rather than all 6
I learnt to play this from an UG tab about ten years ago and actually bought a 2nd guitar so I could keep it tuned for it. Great tune and great tutorial JJ.
This right here man!!!! This right here!!! Zep has so many epic pieces but aside from " for your life", this is absolutely my favorite!!! Thank you so very much for taking the time to do this for us and thanks for the joy you express while doing this. That's what separates you from the rest. You help make us to be better players and better people. I know that I myself have watched this at least 12 times since you posted it and have practiced and played it almost non stop since you've shared this with us. Thank you, still praying for you, and God bless you and your wife. Wolf Man Jack is smiling.
This song and your old lesson on it has been a great warm up/song to play ever since I learned it a little over a year ago! Thank you for all your wisdom and help
Wow. The Universe is listening after all. I got the Led out with my 15 year old boy last night whilst making dinner and thought in my head, “JJ should do the Rain Song. I’m sure he will pick up some subtleties that I miss.” Wake up this morning and lo and behold.. Thoughts of peace and love from UK to all in USA today.
Thanks James James for another great lesson. You teach so well. I have watched many of your lessons and play throughs. Have been a subscriber since the PT days. Thank you for keeping it fresh and fun!
thank you dude, such a beautiful song. i remember the very moment i heard it for the first time. I was alone in an apartment listening to the stereo and it came on. I said to myself, what the fuck is that??? it's so freaking beautiful. then i found out it was Zeppelin. that song blew me away.
I worked this out when I was 19 (I'm 64 now) but from your better version I can see the corners I cut. I was nearly there but you've corrected what I play in a number of places, thanks!
Way back when I was around 18, a friend taught this to me...in standard tuning. Never sounded correct, as most alt-tuned songs don't when you try to play them straight. A few years ago, we had contact on FB, and I mentioned that he had the song wrong. Pointed him to another tutorial, and he said "I like my way better." Okay. What can ya do?
As a relative beginner this has always been my 'you've made it' song. I love the Page/Plant unledded - Jimmy cracks this great smile when he rakes the last chord - even he knows how good it is. Awesome lesson JJ, makes me think it's doable.
Funny thing about this song is that after Zep III, George Harrison told Jimmy Page they should do a mellow song. Not knowing what he meant, he came up with the Rain Song.
Love this song. Thanks for goin through the tunings I hate when someone teaches it wrong lol. Just glad I’m a bass player don’t have to worry about such trivial matters lol. I’ve been learning a lot from your channel getting enough courage to do some acoustic shows.
Hey James, Love your videos and been with ya even when you had your other channel. On the that channel you played DADGAD Medley / Out on the Western Plain / White Summer / Black Mountainside. I would REALLY like a lesson on that, and I'm sure a lot of your other subscribers would as well. Even if you had to break it up into (3) different lessons for each tune in the medley. I think its awesome, and no one on RUclips really does it, especially the way you do it. Thank you
Awesome...I thought there was something missing. Dont know how to explain it though. Regardless, you've got one hell of an ear. In gonna watch it again. Maybe I got distracted.
Love the tune and your take on it. I’ve been playing around with it for a few years. There’s a few “ rainy”(?) riffs you omitted on that climbing part which I think really add to the piece, and I’m surprised you didn’t go there. No biggie; I’ve enjoyed and learned from your vids since the Tricker days. Thank you.
once again great job, already knew how to play it, but you gave me a couple of added riffs thank you very much, on the debate of difficulty if i can play this with ease am i no longer a beginner?
Thanks for the great lessons. My Gibson J42 is buzzing at the 10th 11th 12th frets. It is so dry here in the Rocky Mountains. I can’t keep enough moisture in it. Any suggestions?
I’m the guy who started playing guitar with the Hendrix tab book in front of me because that’s what I was interested in. Didn’t know enough to know how little I actually knew.
Not sure if your name really is James , so I'll just call you ....James. James , thank you . after watching lots of your instructional post, I fine them excellent .Great content. jeff

LMAO
Don't let er go cheap hehe
Nice one...
we're still waiting for some news!
Two people can play this song.
You and of course Jimmy Page......
I have been following you for years and your lessons are the best .
Thank You
The chords are just pure magic.
I learned this is standard tuning when I was 16 (in 1984). Didn’t know it was in another tuning! Got it sounding pretty close, but it took some tricky work
same for me ... been playing for 42years (self taught) back then closest thing to I knew to another tuning was a half step down..
Me too! From the Led Zeppelin Complete book. Not sure if I want to unlearn that to tackle the song this way, but it’s cool.
Me too, 2004, i was 23. I didnt know you have to change tuning, but I was sure to miss something. When I knew the right tuning, i learn in a hour by ear. I discover the world of tune changing with this masterpiece
@@billcavin3554 before led zeppelin (i start to play them in 2004 at age if 23) i knew just dropped E in D😆
Lol, I did the same thing!
Has to be 1 of my favourite openings to play on a guitar,I can't think of any other chord that captures the mood so much,I love the anticipation throughout the song, stunning 👌✌️
One of the most beautiful songs ever written in my opinion. Thanks for the lesson ☮️
Learning songs by ear is JJ's superpower.
That "Unledded" version of this song is one of the best things I've ever seen on RUclips...absolute magic.
Such a beautiful song. My first guitarist rob played this for me. And ive always thought of him strumming up when i hear it. Im in my late fall. Springtimes come and gone.

Jimmy's magnum opus. Well done James.

Not only do I appreciate your playing, i also appreciate most of your shirts. Good memories watching Midnight Special.

I love how in the video you can see him throw away the pick right before it.
If you listen closely to the studio version, you can hear the pick hit the floor when he drops it at that part.

Love all you do James! You’ve got a great ear for the notes! Your playing is exceptional. Your one of my favorite teachers 👀 thanks for all you do.
Great, I listen to Led Zeppelin now for 45 years, what you show and let us hear is unique, like Jimmy itself, thank you !!! ❤️
Thank you for the Zeppelin lessons, I'm looking forward to your take on this one.

Сочинение однозначно гениальное
I love the way you teach. So clear. It is enjoyable just to watch. Thank you so much.

You are an awesome inspiration. It’s amazing just chilling and listening to this!
Thank you for posting. Really enjoying getting into this magical tune.
Thanks James James for another great lesson. You teach so well. I have watched many of your lessons and play throughs. Have been a subscriber since the PT days. Thank you for keeping it fresh and fun!
One of the most beautiful things they recorded.....❤️
I learnt to play this song with your old video, recorded on your porch. Good memories!
I've lost count of how many songs you've taught me, I'll keep watching as long as you keep posting! cheers
This is AWESOME!!!! Thanks JJ, beautiful Led Zeppelin song to choose.
Thank you. This is one of my fav zep songs
I learned this song when you did a lesson on the old channel years ago. Thanks for uploading it again so I can relearn it now!
Hey man, i'm just wanna say thank you for all the songs and if you teach me through the years 🙌🏻🙌🏻
thank you dude, such a beautiful song. i remember the very moment i heard it for the first time. I was alone in an apartment listening to the stereo and it came on. I said to myself, what the fuck is that??? it's so freaking beautiful. then i found out it was Zeppelin. that song blew me away.
Awesome lesson
Good tutorial! Just started working on it, this is gonna be a big help!
Beautiful guitar part superbly played and demonstrated - thank you.
I love your Zeppelin tutorials!
the “but for mere mortals” line got me 🤣
One of my favorites to play
I worked this out when I was 19 (I'm 64 now) but from your better version I can see the corners I cut. I was nearly there but you've corrected what I play in a number of places, thanks!
Insanely beautiful!

Hey brutha. As usual. Every time I wanna learn it, you got it.
☮️🎸 hoping your well and rocking
I'm well and I'm rocking -- I hope you are, too.
Thank you for this, this is my favorite song and now thanks to you I'm learning it. It's a good day if I can listen to this song. :)
I've been playing 20 years and still can't play eruption!! thanks for the lesson James !
Thanks JJ this is such a great song

Yes - Page’s (and JJ’s) greatest - much Thanks!
That's great. I learned it in standard tuning from an old Zeppelin guitar tab book I had. It sounded the same but it was hard to play
Thank you so much for this James.
It to me awhile to get the tuning .. but this lesson made my night ! Awesome. Well done
wonderful lesson. no fluff.
I've made this comment before but I'll say it again it's just amazing how Jimmy Page or anyone can create these beautiful songs how is it possible??
Funny thing about this song is that after Zep III, George Harrison told Jimmy Page they should do a mellow song. Not knowing what he meant, he came up with the Rain Song.
Great lesson! Thank you
Love this song. Thanks for goin through the tunings I hate when someone teaches it wrong lol. Just glad I’m a bass player don’t have to worry about such trivial matters lol. I’ve been learning a lot from your channel getting enough courage to do some acoustic shows.
I think it's always tuned a full step lower on acoustic so as not to put too much stress on the neck and the top.
i've been playing for 6 months and i can play eruption, good for you...lol. that might be the funniest thing you've ever said on here...
Thanks man, amazing 👌

Love the Martin D45
That’s a 41, but it’s really close to a 45. :)
I played along and we sounded like the record.
Great , thanks
I always play this song in regular tuning. I'm to lazy to change my tuning. But cool lesson maybe some day I'll give it a try. Thanks for lesson.
Amazon just delivered my shred kit this morning. Let's go!
Most excellent...plus ur shirt is the bomb 💣...
Awesome...I thought there was something missing. Dont know how to explain it though. Regardless, you've got one hell of an ear. In gonna watch it again. Maybe I got distracted.

Well, I did explain that I’m doing the acoustic part from the studio recording.
@@jamesjames9275 - and well done. Thanks again.
Really well explained thanks!
My understanding is that they played it in the different tuning live because fewer notes had to be changed on an already difficult 18-string guitar.
Like that shirt!!
Flutie Flakes? you must be a BC guy. Most amazing Hail Mary pass ever. Fun times. Nice guitar.
The tunings were chosen to compliment Robert Plant's vocal range.
Nevermind the guitars I'm jealous of your T-shirt collection LOL
Great point. I always notice them first.
JJ has a video dedicated to them all .... have a look
Great lesson, thxs!
Use the lower tuning for acoustic guitars so you dont put too much tension on the neck. Electric guitars can handle the E tuning.
Nice!! How do you figure out these tunnings?
Thanks
I miss your brilliant tutorials...
whoa! is that the shirt Chris Glass designed? (wire and twine) i had one those and gave it away. thanks for the vid! sounds great
I have a box of Flutie Flakes too! lol
Really cool James !!
Oh man that's a good one
Brilliant🔊III[[[[☮😎🖖👍
once again great job, already knew how to play it, but you gave me a couple of added riffs thank you very much, on the debate of difficulty if i can play this with ease am i no longer a beginner?
thanks for talents
Thanks for the great lessons. My Gibson J42 is buzzing at the 10th 11th 12th frets. It is so dry here in the Rocky Mountains. I can’t keep enough moisture in it. Any suggestions?
Thank you from a mere mortal.
Great work! Any chances you could teach us how to play Midnight Moonlight by Page?
I never knew the live versions are tuned up. Wow.
There's amazing song by George Harrison - Your Love Is Forever. It is like a delicate reflection of this song...
Actually according to Jimmy Page the opening chords are an homage to Something by George Harrison.
I’m the guy who started playing guitar with the Hendrix tab book in front of me because that’s what I was interested in. Didn’t know enough to know how little I actually knew.
