Everyone's favourite fish-come-captain of the guard is known for being aggressive, ferocious, and sometimes downright scary, but what is it about her that makes her heroic? UNDERLAB compares Undyne to other characters in UNDERTALE to find out why so many monsters idolise her and what makes her so courageous.
A quick note about her being the 'protagonist': I mean she's the protagonist of the monster's narrative/perspective, not necessarily the game! Sorry for not directly explaining that which has caused a little bit of confusion 8)

To me this was never in question. Undyne is the only monster with a true sense of honor.
One thing you didn't mention is how she tries to help everyone around her, in any way possible. Many of her phone calls reveal so much about her like she used to give Shyren piano lessons to make her more confident, or really wants Napstablook to be happy again. Or even Papyrus's cooking lessons! Papyrus also once says "That's Undyne for you! Always helping the society!" and although the context serves as a joke, it does imply she indeed does her best at keeping everyone happy.
Also another thing is that after she dies a "star" literally fades away from the ceiling.
I ramble quite a bit, sorry, she is just too awesome and quite underrated in my opinion.

When I first played Undertale, I was SO afraid of Undyne that I used to make someone else play it till she went away. But then I saw genocide videos and I was amazed by how determined she was. Especially her last words touched my heart. That was the time when I truly agreed with everyone that she was a true heroine. Oh, and I think you did a good job explaining Undyne, I liked it :)
You know... Undyne isn't the ACTUAL Hero of the Game. Sure,she's a great character but the truth is... Heroes don't try to mercilessly kill an innocent child or a relentless killer. She did stall the Child and succeeded there but she still died,knowing she would lose over all. She failed in her mission each and everytime,no matter what run you attempt. She is a Villain regardless of what path you take.

Imagine how it must feel to be the last possible force standing to the threat of your entire race. Having to be the light and final known hope for the survival of almost everything and everyone you love. Imagine, just how Undyne must've felt, and how she knows she's the last physical force (aside from Sans) to stop you from the near extinction of her race. It takes a true awakening and push to have the determination Undyne had in her battle to attempt to stop your reign of trepidation. It shows how much she tried to save her race, how determined and driven she was.
Undyne is a true hero.

Emma Frey Many monsters were saved by Alphys and Undyne by being evacuated. Asgore was also alive during the Sans fight that’s why despite her death Undyne mocks you for failing to truly kill everyone.
This is a pretty good detailing of Undyne as a character :) However, there is one things I'd like to point out. In the title it's stated that Undyne is not only the hero, but the protagonist. Hero and protagonist are two different things. A hero is someone in the story who is heroic, brave and self sacrifices, while a protagonist is simply the main character. For example, in the movie Sleeping Beauty, the main character is Aurora, but the hero is Prince Phillip and the heroines are the fairies. Thus, unless you are following the story of Undyne, she cannot be a protagonist, and is still considered an antagonist to the protagonist of Frisk, as an antagonist doesn't have to be evil, just stand in the way of the protagonist's goal, i.e. Making it to the surface.

I forgot to explain exactly what I meant by that--if we follow the monster's narrative, Undyne is the protagonist! Of course, Undertale: Undyne Edition doesn't exist... not yet at least! Hehe.

The biggest theory on how Undyne obtains her DT is that it's all dependent on who she's fighting for: In Neutral/Pacifist runs, she tries to kill you so she can reclaim the surface to monster-kind. Where as in Genocide runs, she tries and kill you to protect not just all monsters, but all life she knows of.
DT is something that comes from the soul, it has a deep emotional connection to the user, so with this in mind:
She dies in Neutral because she wishes to bring harm you to reach a goal that while is noble, is technically selfish to monsters, but she transforms in Genocide because she's able to look past her kind's pain and turmoil and looks at the big picture. She refuses to die, for The Earth's sake...
Finally got around to making a little something about Undyne! Sorry this took so long to make (and I wanted to make it a lot longer/better than this), but I'm bogged down with essays I have to write! Holiday times soon, and with holidays come plenty of great videos 8)

This is my favorite episode of underlab because Undyne is my favorite character for this reason.

Undyne is my eldest little girl's favorite. She's gone twice now for Halloween as her. Having watched them play through the game several times, I've always thought Undyne was the hero simply because she's the one who killed the humans to gather their souls each time. It's not like anyone else is doing it and it's a pretty dangerous and distasteful job.
There is one thing i've always thought of:
Of you consider that a kid (probably 9/10 years old) is able to kill the king of all monsters (which is probably countless ages old, since boss monsters age only when their child ages, and since Asriel is dead Asgore and Toriel will never die for normal causes) and the heroine trained by the king himself which is strong enough to supplex a huge boulder and the UnderLab logo, makes me think that there was no match between humans and monsters, since the humans are 7 billions and the monsters only a couple thousands i guess, since you can kill only 97 in the genocide, + the ones you couldn't kill (the inhabitants of Home and New Home and the ones escaped with Alphys) and since what i said before, that a 10 years old kid can kill the monster ruler, clearly says that humans are way more powerful than monsters... poor Asgore...
What's funny is that he takes a hit from a LV20 chara and lives, that's quite the accomplishment if you ask me.
Oshachu7755 He didn't live the hit, it dealt 999999 damage, he was just telling his last words when the weed appeared.
Also always wandered why Asgore didn't absorb the souls during the genocide route, when you meet him its like he wasn't informed at all of your arrival, i know that he doesn't want all the power that the souls give, but come on! Just do it!

Luca Piraccini I always had a personal theory on this. Toriel nor Asgore expect your strength so their guards are down. I feel defense and withstanding attacks is based on how much hp and how much they are ready for you like how Undyne anfter dying the first time in no mercy she is prepared for your attacks

Although I do agree with you that Undyne is the true heroine of the story, that doesn't mean she is the protagonist. The protagonist is the main character of tthe story, and is therefore Frisk, or arguably Chara. The protagonist is not neccicarily always good, you know.
He meant that she's the protagonist from the monster's perspective. And if you think about it it's pretty true.

Something interesting I noticed is that Undyne's missing eye and Sans' glowing eye are both the right eye and they're the only two who didn't turn to dust immediately after you defeat them.
Undyne assumed her Undying form and Sans just exited stage-left. They both, in the Genocide route anyway, appear to possess Determination.
Mostly just aimless rambling, but I thought it was a cool thing to note.

Hey man, awesome video! Funny we covered a similar topic within a week of eachother again (first the deaths, !92 Undyne) and in my video I brought up how she is the purest of the monsters too. Undyne is my favourite character, I can't really think of many video games with a character that is seen as selflessly heroic and strong... that is a woman. It really makes me happy about myself. She is definitely the true hero of the story and is a little underrated
Wrong. She is not a Hero. She may be a hero in the underground,but if you look closely at her character,you can see big flaws that remove her status as a hero. She is relentless and tries to kill a child. On the pacifist run,Frisk is the TRUE HERO over any other being. In the Neutral Run,Frisk is defending themselves,on the Genocide,they're cleasing the Underground of their Despair. If you think about it like that,Undyne's in the wrong.
I feel as though Undyne the Undying was the true final boss of the genocide route. I know there are the other fights with Muffet, Mettaton, and Sans, but at that point, you are no longer Frisk and are too powerful to be stopped. When you fight Undyne the Undying, you are at the point where Chara starts to completely control you, making it the last true fight before Sans' karma trip tries to stop you in a last ditch effort to save the world from the monster that you had become.

I would say given the circumstances Undyne could be seen as the true heroine of Undertale for sure. Especially the Genocide path because she not only see's you as a threat to Monsters but even to Humans. This was definitely a well thought out video man.:) Keep up the great work man.

Yep all Undyne does is for her kind that is why when you kill her in the neutral run she refuses to die until her body gives out. That is why I love her. She is the heroine that NEVER gives up no matter what.
She also thinks of saving her people first. Which is why when you leave Monster Kid alone in the bridge scene in neutral/pacifist run she will leap down for Monster Kid saving him. In battle, hitting Undyne after she saves him she already has lost a small portion of her health because of the great leap she made for Monster Kid.
Also she plays piano. I love me a good piano player. Well actually just anyone who can play piano really. Arpeggio.

Undyne is the heroine, but not the protagonist. The protagonist of a story is the main character, which is Frisk.
Protagonists are the Heroes,so Frisk is the Hero by default. Undyne is an Enemy,thus she's a Villain over all. She poses as a False Hero that was doomed for failure.

Don’t forget the *dusty* tutu found in Waterfall. And the ballet shoes that make Frisk feel *incredibly dangerous.* It’s possible that Undyne fought and defeated the owner of those items, and considering the dust, the child probably had a moderate amount of EXP, and thus some LOVE. This could’ve fed into her seeing Frisk as a significant threat.
Undyne is definitely more than a hero(ine) than Sans, since he just waited around in Judgement Hall while you slaughtered all of his kind.
She's a psychotic lesbian fish monster, the sushi chef's nightmare and can't cook pasta without burning her house down...and in one timeline, a human who is a homicidal maniac makes HER acts of violence look innocent! (e.g. attacking the one who delivers the mail) | 6:10 - Fuelled by the power of determination infused sea-grass ice-cream. (via a decomposing human who fell to their death)

Undyne the Undying made me reset my genocide run TWICE because she was so difficult i just gave up pretty much. although i eventually did beat her it took a ridiculous amount of time and countless deaths. honestly she really is a hero, the very last person who could truly stop my genocide run (besides Sans but technically he's the REASON for it too) i didn't like Undyne at first, she was scary and seemed mean, but i have grown to love her. she is so determined and strong, how can you not admire that? and there's the fact that she really did almost stop my genocide run, i really gotta hand it to her, thats EPIC. so yeah Undyne is definitely the true hero, maybe not the one who saves everyone in the end, but i believe she is surely the one who helped keep everyone's hopes and dreams alive til then, by protecting them and taking care of her people.

3:52 Frisk is clearly not the first human that Undyne killed. Just like ASGORE, Undyne had the chance to absorb one human SOUL, cross the Barrier, collect six more and then break the Barrier.

Undyne's an amazing character, though you have to admit she's more comic relief on the pacifist route. Sans might be the true hero at the end, but Undyne's getting full marks for effort.

Im kinda annoyed by sans, he does absolutely nothing, when you kill his brother nuetral/genocide he does nothing (if he using the promise protecting monster and attacking killing/attacking the human is 2 different things) , he doea nothing till the judgment hall(like grow some balls man... Wait he can't), alphys is a coward yet she atleast helps the citizens evacuate. Let's not also forget on the date he threatens the child even in the pasifist route (sorry if it sounded to harsh I kinda just went on a rant here lol so imma say sorry again and I will disclaim I don't hate him I just find him annoying

UnderLab? Just out of curiosity, how long does it take to edit and make one of your videos? I know that it takes theory a couple days. What about you?
It's hard to say! I try to make a lot of custom images for my videos, but then I get worried I'm taking too long and try to rush things! Also, all of my videos are of drastically varying lengths, hehe! I'd say on average twelve hours or so spread over two days and an extra hour for the creation of the thumbnail. Then there's exporting and uploading which takes about four hours with my shoddy internet and HDD 8|
