This looks absolutely brilliant. I love seeing all those old vintage cars just giving it the beans up the hill! Looks like an absolute blast. I noticed the punch buggies seemed to have a notable advantage with all the weight in the rear and rwd. Cheers from across the pond!
Love to see the Ford Pops (there used to be a couple of really competitive ones) First Morris Minor I've seen. Never see a 60's Ford Anglia, although, on paper they should do well.
I thought it was funny how half the time they’d be starting the run, the camera would go fuzzy, and then when it came back to being clear the engine would’ve stalled out
some classes have a restart for some sections to make it a little fairer as for rear engined cars, or bikes it can be a little easier to climb some sections due to traction etc. the restart isn’t always at the bottom though and can be mid way up the hill, like the section blue hills on the lands end trial 👍
i have no ide what this really is or what the rules are. but i love it! looks so much fun. vw bug or a beach buggy is a great choice but i wonder how a old Volvo 340 would fair
LMAO the Variety of cars that made it was hilarious. When the stop they loose there momentum,hard to start up again. I know the camera doesn’t give the hill justice. When the VW BUGS made it was great. Them cars need good MUD tires, it would help.
It was crazy the variety of cars that were running. I was only there for half the event, but all the others that were waiting in line was ridiculous. Anything from vintage three row bench seat motor cars, to reliant robin chassis based cars, to beetles, to MX5’s etc. the be beetles did seem to have the best luck. And the video doesn’t show it justice to how steep it was. And it was stupidly muddy and boggy from the rain prior to it. And the mud tires would help, but I believe it was against the regs. Think it was summer tires only

From memory, I believe it was rules for different classes that were running there. I believe one was starting back around the corner at the bottom, and another could start at the marked point at the bottom of the hill
I'm not saying it's easy on a motorbike. I'm definitely NOT saying that. But somehow you never ever doubt that most of the motorbikes are going to make it up quite easily. And that's exactly what happens.
Being single track vehicles bikes have a much wider choice in the line they can take. Cars as dual track vehicles are much more limited in this respect.
@@hackdaniels7253 The bikes that didn't make the hill were piloted by riders who didn't know how to ride a section like that or the bikes were to heavy to maneuver like they needed too. That hill would've been a cake walk for my Suzuki DR650 w/ knobby tires. The OEM tires were skittish on anything other then the road. That was the problem w/ a lot of the cars, using regular street tires instead of A/T, M/T or snow tires. Look how 'filled' the tread got.
It can look a lot slower from this angle haha! Most cars go flat out but remember there’s a lot of classics so even with a V8 theyd get a little shaky, and the angle always makes us look slower
Yes! It can be tricky for this section though because sometimes it can be a little drier and you want a little more in your tyres. Did this climb yesterday in the morris minor in this video and went for 12psi
Watching all those VWs just walking over the section, it's not hard to understand why the Wehrmacht slapped tin sides on the same running gear and called it the Kubelwagen...
It actually does help for some sections! Sometimes the movement is more to bounce you out of a hole you’re digging yourself and although your point it true sometimes often it’s the best you can do in the moment to try and clear the section haha

It was exceptionally wet that day. As it had been raining heavily the day before and the morning leading up to the event. And the hill was ridiculously slippery for competitors and spectators alike. And with the steep gradient of the hill, it was only understandable

Yea it was summer tires (no mud or snow spec tires), open diff and FWD/RWD only. Basically to give them every disadvantage going!

I kept waiting for the KX500 with a fresh tire on the back..
So what I've learnt from this is if I buy a VW Beatle I have a good change of success, and if I buy a Suzuki X90, I have a low chance of success.

not all VWs did those with 2 tires on the back for additional weight did well with good tires on
