For me, i like the Otacon ending more than the Meryl one, since it tied perfectly with the start of MGS2, especially since she was nowhere to be found in that game. So i always imagined the Otacon ending as the real one and since the bombing never happened at the ending of MGS1, Fox Hound was able to find Meryl still alive, making her return possible in MGS4.

As a working voice actor, I can tell you that using AI for "small, inconsequential NPCs" eliminates a lot of potential portfolio items from newer VAs and still cheapens the experience for the audience, even in a small sense. I understand why someone would think replacing an NPC with only one or two lines with AI isn't a big deal, but the reality is that it starts with NPCs with one line, then multiple paragraphs, and then characters that are no longer minor. Don't use AI for voice acting in new games, full stop.
i thought of maybe the only good reason for an ai voice actor: saying a player's name. the rest of it would be voiced by the real VA except for their name. obviously not in the middle of a sentence but if they have to call it out or something
