- Welcome to one of the world’s most jaw dropping, tundra river systems this little blue ball has to offer. The Upper Owens river takes my breath away every time and I always feel so incredibly blessed to be able to fish it.
Let’s head on out there folks, and see what kind of trout fishing awaits us!

I love it out there.
I could watch this guy all day
Man you ain't a kidding that's some beautiful country!!
It truly, truly is!
Great video! I've been fishing that stretch of the Owens River since 1956. Great times and a ton of fish. We'll be back fishing it next season opener, and during the summer and fall. Keep up the great work and enjoy the Eastern Sierra, it's our Happy Place!
Wow….I can only imagine the memories that have been made!
Thanks John, I’ve been falling in love with the mountains of California.
Your hosting of the people at home watching has gotten more entertaining!
Thanks bro!
No way 2 of my favorite RUclipsrs in one video! Lets Go !
Nice day, great place and top footage, fishing is good too, tight lines and greetings from New Zealand,, Tony.
Hey Tony!
Me too. I love it there. I was just there two days ago fishing.
Great work Micah! I love watching you explore the eastern sierras with a fly rod! One quick tip: you should try to set the hook downstream of the fish. I noticed you set the hook upstream of the fish a couple times which can lead to you pulling the hook out of the fish’s mouth (because the fish are usually facing upstream when they feed). Keep up the great adventures!
Thanks brotha for that tip, that’s a big thing I’ve been working on! I gotta mention that to people in future videos too because I never thought about the direction of hooksets until I started fly fishing
Great work, really enjoyed watching. The insert with photos of your flies was a nice touch. Keep it up!
🙏🏻🙏🏻
30 years ago we would tie huge heavily weighted red or burgundy colored woolly buggers (de-barbed) cast them upstream and let them bounce along the bottom. Surprising how the trout love them things especially the browns. Tx for the vid good memories.
Man…sounds like some good memories! And guess what…that still works to this day! I use 1/8 ounce black bucktail jigs and the Browns go crazy!
Did you realize you are fishing inside a caldera that is very similar to Yellowstone? I love that area. One of my favorite places in the Eastern Sierra. The violence of the eruptions 760k years ago is hard to fathom. You can see it in the depth of the Bishop Tuff (basically welded ash from the eruption) down in the Owens Gorge. Beautiful filming and fishing. So enjoyed this!
Whoa….well I just learned something new 😆 Thank Dave for sharing this!! I haven’t done much research yet of the actual geography of the Sierras, so reading about calderas makes so much sense why the terrain looks the way it does. Amazing.
Glad to see you made it out there. I was just on the lower and it was doing good. Hoping to get out there again in a couple weeks
I’m sure the lower is a lot of fun to fish right now!
@@UntilJourneysEnd I was just down there and it was full of life. The upper is supposed to be up and going but it seems to be a little slow right now.
That’s great to hear.
i probably fished the same spot in the 1980s. brings back memories.
So cool…
Great video Micah! Me and My girlfriend really enjoyed it! - Barret
Thanks brother
Where do you park to get access to the Owens?
That craw would’ve made some great bait
If I could have used it I would have! The regs were only artificial lures due to the fish getting ready to spawn.
I enjoy that you establish where you are, time, and close ups of bait type. So, how do we keep this area secret to those who appreciate the glory and beauty of eastern sierra?
I think the better question is, how do we get more people into fishing and hunting?
Only when someone starts to love something, can you teach them to preserve and care for it. The more people we have who love and care for the outdoors, the easier it will be to keep these places serene and beautiful for the next generation.
First-time viewer... got a subscribe outta me.
Welcome!! Glad you found the channel 😄
Hey, enjoyed the video. I’ll subscribe. I wanted to point out that I think several of those fish that you called rainbows were actually California golden trout. Could be wrong, but that’s my take. I might have to watch the video again. Keep up the great work. Cheers.
Hey man! Glad you enjoyed the video and found the channel 🙌🏻
So these are actually all Rainbow trout! The California Golden trout doesn’t live in this river system. Plus, they look quite a bit different 😄 Here’s a episode where I fished for Goldens! 👇🏻

Gotta up that food game fam
😆 I gotta get better at catching dinner!
Great video. Stop your cast higher and you won’t slap the water with your fly line…
Great tip. I’ve been working on implementing this lately.
That's it I'm going fishing
DO IT!!!!!!!!!
Hey brother Micah !
What's the length of you're leader from the fly to the strike indicator.
And are you using a split shot..ty , I'm learning myself 😎🤔
I usually use a 2ft leader, but you can adjust this for however deep you want to go. The only thing is that the longer your leader is for your dropper, the easier it is for your line to get tangled. I only use a split shot if the river is flowing pretty fast and I don’t feel like my presentation is getting down quick enough.
Great fishing video as usual. Were you above or below the bridge and Browns campground at Benton crossing?
I was below the bridge and campground! Fairly close to the lake!
@@UntilJourneysEnd great area! I tried there but got skunked. Thanks. Love your fishing adventures.
I love your videos, I think you answered this before but what camera do you use to film your footage?
I’m glad Ed! Thanks for watchin!
I primarily use GoPro Hero 8’s and a Blackmagic pocket 4k.
What weight rod are you using?
A 9ft 5 weight!
What month was this
September!
Great fishing spots!! Lol I’ve actually flung a trout out of the river just like that and unfortunately smacked the fish against a rock… 😢
Hey, we’ve all done it man. When trout this small take your fly/lure in a river, it’s really hard to tell if you’re feeling the current or a fish.
Please stop posting everything in the Eastern Sierra. You're screwing every person who lives here. It wouldn't be bad except most people who come here don't have much eticit and they don't take there trash with them. Please respect our backyard
Many (not all) of the people who have bad etiquette are because they have never been shown why it is so important to treat the wild with care and respect. They’ve grown up in a concrete jungle where respect of wildlife is almost non-existent.
These are the people I’m trying to inspire and educate because many of them are the future of fishing. If we don’t, they’ll continue polluting the areas we love because the people who are supposed to show them a better way, stay embittered in their fox holes, talking crap about the outsiders.
I’m a young fisherman and hunter. But I get frustrated just like you at times.
However, your solution, isn’t the right one. We live in a day and age where online video is the number 1 source of education and reaching young people.
What I encourage you to do, is to ditch the mentality that this is “your backyard”. It is “OUR” backyard. And you need to think about who will take care of it, long after you are dead and buried.
I ever catch you harming a rattlesnake, it’ll be the last thing you ever do.
Does eating one count?
Rattle snakes are shit
This dude is tarded.
😂 takes one to know one
Barbless 🪝s and catch and release right?
For that section of the Upper Owens and for time of year, it was artificial only and an 18in minimum size limit.
You real need to get out (((((( California )))) YOU WANT BLUE RIBEN TROUT streams !!
