I thought getting the Landmark 40 and the subterra 40 will lead to using the subterra 34 a lot less, but the subterra 34 is such a versitile backpack i can use for most of my needs. If I could only pick kne backpack, I'll chooae the subterra 34, now almost three years later. And having the ability to (sometimes) overstuff it to something similar to 40 liter is such a nice added bonus.
I settled on this too after months of looking at videos and choosing.. I really like it so far, I hope it's not just honeymoon phase 😄. From the downside I've discovered I'd say it doesn't properly stand up on its own (that's always annoying) unless packed full, then it does. Secondly, the water bottle pocket is on the opposite side to the lateral quick access zips.. and that's means everytime you put it down sideways to pick up something.. it sits on the bottle, is unstable.. rolls away. plus the bottle/mug sits in the dirt... Having option to attach a bottle in the zipper side would be great.. other than that.. like you say combination of smaller size day pack and large travel backpack is invaluable.. plus those zippers on the sides are amazing for just slinging the bag over the shoulder while standing and taking thinks quickly in and out.. super practical when on the go.. top loading backpacks can't compete with that.
I can only speak for my self, when I say that this still is my go to every-thing-onebag backpack! I use a bottle that can be anchored at the top to the sidebuckle. That at least solves the issue with instability and the risk of falling out when getting into the backpack from the side while standing. I do not use this backpack that much anymore, but that is only because I have been using the Thule Covert DSRL Backpack 32l for 6 months now. Stay tuned for review coming up quite soon!
I think Thule make some great luggage and backpacks. The only problems tend to be some oversights on use of materials in places. Examples include mesh that could be more durable, plastic handles that need more finishing, or the occasional zipper that doesn't move that well, or isn't of the quality of the zippers on the rest of the bag /pack. I've no doubt they could make the perfect luggage for under 2/3 of the price of Tumi if they just checked that all components were of a suitable quality. The Crossover 2 and Revolve lines are close but even they have some irritating deficiencies. On the Revolve, it's the release on the lock. A near perfect hardcase but nobody seemed to ask if that release was of the quality and durability of the rest of the product. I wonder if they should do "plus" versions of their products where they upgrade some key components for a higher price.
Adding the plus or pro might be an interesting aproach, given that this is something invested in for years. I have treated the subterra 34s mesh with the sowing kit a couple of times as well as som reinforcing of the shulderstraps.
@@hmuller agree. Mesh is super cheap though. They could use tougher mesh for minimal added cost. They have better mesh on the Crossover 2 models so they have the suppliers.. I like products that last a long time. People joke about how things were built better in the past but it was the expectation of craftsmanship throughout the product. Tumi and Rimowa were much cheaper about 2 decades ago and those bags lasted for a decade plus. I reckon manufacturers are deliberately using weaker components so they'll get replacement purchases. Materials science has only advanced in the last 2 decades and yet the products are worse.
Thanks! No it falls forward (the side with the logo) unless you pack it bottom heavy. If you have a laptop and tablet it sometimes works as a counter weight if the rest of your items are light weight.
Hey! Thank you for the review! Do you remember if this is the "Black" version or the "Dark Shadow" (grey) one? It seems that the Dark Shadow one has the greenish-yellow color on the inside, while the Black has the blue, which I like less...
Yeah, I think the yellow/green interior is the previous version of the pack and the new version of the black one has the dark blue material, as most stores here in Norway does only offer the latter.
@@hmuller Yeah, that's what I thought :( I am still able to find the previous one on Amazon, but it's slightly more expensive (about 160 euro vs 100/120 for the Black)... On the one hand, the color shouldn't make any difference, on the other hand.... I just find the yellow one prettier :D
Yeah, as of now you might want to go a bit higher in order to get that one. At least that is an option. Just got the blue Subterra 40 in for review with the flaming red/orange interior for review. Stay tuned for å review of it in the coming weeks!
That's really nice bag too.. though I think more of larger backpack/daypack, this one has more flexibility in that that it can expand a bit. The packing cube is also a great travel accessory.. I like them both but bought only the roll top
It is too big for a personal item by definition but it will fit under the larger non-isle seats. It will most likely fit you, but I recommend trying it out in a store of you can.
No, it does soak in water a bit in quite heavy rain, especially at the zippers. My gues is that will do that for a full day of regular downpour as well. If you live in a rainy area I recomend getting av rainfly for it.
@@hmuller ah dang. I've been checking this bag for some months and was like "is it even possible?!" Anyway, just ordered this bag last week. Need to find a way to attach a reflexer to this bag somehow. Winter is coming!
@@pruek You can always try to sew it on though. The bottom is a bit padded, but it might affect the TPU-coating that is providing its water resistance. I ahve been reviewing th Thule Covert DSRL backback 32l for the lasst 6 months and out of all of my three bags the subterra 34 is my favorite given its simolicity and versitility. So I would totally say you made a good choice!
The best bagpack I ever bought! Truly worth it!

Thank you. You mentioned what most other reviews missed, that it is possible to over pack it by folding the opening less.
Yeah, even though it is never something to aim for, having the freedom to overpack is gold.

Thank you for this awesome review. I’ve been undecided whether to get this or not.

nice detailed review! i was planning on getting the 30l
Did you eventually end up getting it?

Does anyone know how small (I.e. min. height) it can get when it is rolled down as much as it will go?
can this be used as a personal item? will it fit a 6’4 guy 300 lbs?
It is too big for a personal item by definition but it will fit under the larger non-isle seats. It will most likely fit you, but I recommend trying it out in a store of you can.
Does it also comes with that strap to carry it on your shoulder?
No, that is only for the 40 liter version.
Can it stand the rainy day outside without rain cover?

How do you attach a reflexer at the bottom of the bag?
Oh, that was just ment as an improvized stand :P

It’s pronounced toolie
Haha, I did the mistake of watching Chase Reeves review of it and went for it as the right way of pronouncing it. Boy was I wrong.
Almost. More like tew-leh.
At least that is how I pronounce it.
@@SuperMarkusparkus Yeah thats how we ponounce it in Swedish and Norwegian :)
