The sluggishness of the fight scenes is mostly due to the difference in editing-no quick cutting and extreme close-ups of fists hitting flesh. The entire film is a homage to the action serials of the 1930s and 1940s. A kid could go to the air-conditioned movie theater and spend a hot summer afternoon there for just a few coins, seeing two movies after a cartoon, a newsreel, and the latest episode in the ongoing serial.
The fight choreography is exactly how it’s supposed to feel. It’s a little over the top because that’s how all those serials were back then. This is one of those types of movies that feels like a “flick” but is made like a “film”.
I loved your comment about 1981 not being all that long ago. As someone who is 56, I agree with you! It feels almost like yesterday at times. Seeing a young person who doesn’t think that 40+ years is ancient history is refreshing!
However, if you think about it in terms of cinematic history, from 2022 to 1981 is 41 years. If you go back 41 years from 1981, you hit 1940. Imagine the movies from that year and compare them to Raiders, and the difference is huge. The development of technology and the difference in acting styles between eras is just so vast.
I’m 58, and 1981 doesn’t seem that long ago. I was 16 when this came out and went to see it with my late dad. It’s one of my comfort movies
Karen Allen was in a great movie with Jeff Bridges called Starman.
I think that Belloq’s feelings for Marion aren’t for her specifically, but as another point in his rivalry with Indiana. After all, “What was briefly yours is now mine.” The Nazis took her away from him, so he regretted losing her, but only as a token of his competitiveness.
12 year old me was so thrilled by this movie in 1981. It was the first time I was allowed to go to the theater with just friends/no parent. So I/we were already pumped up, feeling all grown up and independent. I was young enough to not be jaded by action/adventure movie tropes yet so the whole plot line was new and exciting. It really kept me on the edge of my seat. Stephen Spielberg was king of the genre back then. The John Williams score is excellent and of course Harrison Ford is dreamy. ;)
I saw this movie in the theater in the summer of 1981. I have been obsessed with it ever since. Such a great film.
Love this film. I recently saw it at The Royal Albert Hall in London and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra played the music live. It was an amazing experience.
I have to laugh. Salvo said, "I don't know if thats a commercial flight. More like a private jet." It's 1936! LOL.

Sallah, the Egyptian with the family in Cairo, was played by John Rhys-Davies. He was Gimli the dwarf in the Lord of the RIngs trilogy. Pretty great. ••• Thanks! PEACE!!!

One of my favourite movies of all time! I think I've seen it more than 30 times (and I don't have it on video or DVD)! I remember the first time I saw it, all the people in the sold out movie house applauded when he shot the guy with the long sword. I had never experienced such a reaction before and never since!
"Raiders of the Lost Ark": A (sorta) throwback to the cliffhanger movies of the 1930's/1940's, with enough action for THREE Action Adventure movies of the 1980's. Harrison Ford got an academic upgrade to "Dr. Henry Jones, Jr.," another iconic role in a great franchise. I've read that Karen Allen refused to play "the damsel in distress" and created "Two-fisted Marion Ravenwood," a match for Indiana Jones. What are the Germans saying? In the scene in Cairo where the guy with the sword was threatening Indy, he was supposed to have a sword fight, but Harrison Ford had a 103° fever that day, so they rewrote it to just shoot the other guy
Yes, this film is the one to go to for that kind of adrenaline, but it was based off of the action films in the 30's.
So glad to see someone appreciate this for the first time, especially praising Harrison Ford's performance. Naturally seeing this in the theater as a 9 year old was thrilling for me too but also knowing him as Han Solo...jeez, pretty much the coolest guy on earth at that point! 😄

The character of Indiana Jones was created because Steven Spielberg was turned down twice to direct a James Bond movie by the creator Albert Broccoli so Spielberg and George Lucas created Character of Indiana Jones.
The scene where Indy shoots the guy with the big sword was supposed to be a big fight scene but most of the cast and crew had dysentery including Harrison Ford who is the one that suggested just shooting the guy because he didn’t have the energy to film a fight scene.
There was an episode of the Big Bang theory where one of the characters pointed out that the ending of the movie would have been the same even if Indy had not gone to find the ark, the Nazis still would have found it opened it and been killed when they opened it.
Can't wait to see you react to the other two. The last crusade is my favorite

His side kick looks like Doc Ock from Spider-man, at the beginning of the movie.

You felt Mariam harbored some serious resentment, but I think that level of passion in her anger after many years indicates she's still in love with him. When women are over you it's very unusual, most of the time, for them to react that strongly unless there's something still there. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean there's not still resentment.
I've always loved these movies. After Star Wars, this one helped put me on the Harrison Ford bandwagon and I'm still a fan today at 60 years old. 😀

this is a movie you have to watch more than twice to understand it, this is a fast movie, a movie that if you don't pay attention you have to see again, this is the summer blockbuster trap. and the movies are fun and exhilarating. These were sheer fun to watch.and back in 1981 there were no Video machines, or YOutube or personal computers. you actually had to socialize with kids your own age.

I really enjoyed watching your reaction to one of my favorite movies (you MUST watch the third one - The Last Crusade!” It might be better than this one.)
You complained about the “sluggish” fight scenes, which you really can’t blame on when it was made because I’m sure you can find plenty of highly choreographed fight scenes from the time frame. No, I think it was because Indiana Jones, in spite of all the “derring do” he pulls off, is still just a man, not a super hero. That fight at the plane with the huge German, when he takes a punch to the face, his knees wobble and he sits down quite abruptly, just like any ordinary man might do. It’s one of my favorite aspects of how Jones is portrayed. The fight scenes are, well, not “realistic,” I can’t claim that, but they aren’t absurdly superhuman either.
I haven’t read through the comments yet so I’m probably not the first to mention it, but movie lore says the script called for an elaborate fight scene between between him and the fancy swordsman but Harrison Ford was suffering from … lower tract issues the day of filming and pulled the “screw it, just shoot him” trick as a joke so he could return to the comfort of his trailer and they changed the script because it was so funny.
Skip 2 and go to 3 the last crusade
Temple of Doom is far superior to Last Crusade. Last Crusade is so overrated.

All of the Indiana Jones movies were good. I remember seeing this in the theater when it came out. Wow the action was so intense. And bro, I'm with you on the spiders. Still have to look at something off screen when it happens. Snakes, I don't have that issue.

Alright. You already know and love the movies I suggested. So now check out a couple 80's movies. Crazy People starring Dudley Moore and Daryl Hannah or Real Men Starring John Ritter and Jim Belushi.
The last part with the warehouse is what rhe Smithsonian does when they find things that don't fit the mainstream narrative story of what they want us to know. Lock it up in a warehouse to never be seen again.

Even those that touched the Ark of the Covenant and were told not to in the Bible died. It represents God's wrath on those that disturbed the Ark.
The Ark of the Covenant is the most sacred relic of the Judeo-Christian religion. It is described as a wooden chest, covered in pure gold, with an elaborately designed lid called the mercy seat (where God will sit during judgement). According to the Book of Exodus, the Ark contains the two stone tablets of the Ten Commandments that God gave unto Moses. According to the New Testament (Book of Hebrews), it also contains Aaron's rod and a pot of manna. There are many throughout history who have sought the Arc because they believe it will give them unlimited power and wealth. If someone approaches the ark, they are believed to be in God's presence - a sinner standing before a holy God who does not tolerate evil (Psalms 5:4-6) and will die as a result of their sins.

Dude, you NEED to watch Mel Gibson's "Apocalypto". It has everything, and is a masterpiece of a movie imho. Afterward, watch the making of......it's fascinating!

Wrong. 1-3 are the ones worth watching. Crystal Skull is not a worthy Indy movie.
Witness is a great but very different Harrison Ford movie.

About the fighting, I think younger people now are totally used to seeing crazy fight scenes like John Wick and a million others, with martial arts and huge guns and explosions. These fight scenes are much closer to how real people would really fight..of course with flourishes since it's an adventure movie. These fight scenes are very grounded in reality, even when they're elevated somewhat, but they're fights real humans could have, where it's not necessary to be Bruce Lee.
Because they WERE real. Nowadays everything is cgi and so fake.
I remember watching this & then later on the other 2 as a kid..... All the insects, spiders, monkey brains, eyeball soup etc ALL used to freak me out & I'd run out of the lounge room & hide 😂
The best movie of its kind, no doubt. The sequels are very good, too. My other favorite movie in this type of adventure, fun movie is the original The Mummy (not the Tom Cruise remake, ugh, lol)
I've always said The Mummy is the second best Indiana Jones movie.

This was the best reaction to Raiders I've ever seen. You edited it wonderfully, but more importantly, you seem so invested in the film! Your emotions are a joy to share. The same is true when you react to music: you feel it, and let us feel you. You're very good at this. I'm sorry that along the way, movie reactions seem to have been dropped as a weekly regular. Your reaction to The Exorcist was the first thing I saw, the first thing that brought you to my attention, and I've now spent several days going through your catalog. And I haven't even touched a bunch of things... you have reactions to Les Miz and other Broadway productions, as well? You've got me for awhile. Thank you for all this.
There's a great documentary on Disney Plus about industrial light and magic (ILM) that did the special effects for Star Wars, E.T., Indiana Jones, and a bunch of other movies for the last 4.5 decades.
Someone else in your comments may have mentioned this already, but the big guy in the middle of the movie with the giant showed who was posturing for a fight and then Indy just shoots him... well, in real life that WAS suppose to be a big fight, but Harrison had stomach issues and, (eh-hem) couldn't be too far from a restroom, so they needed to make that film shoot day shorter, so this is what they came up with. Harrison later expressed regret for the other actor who'd prepared all this choreography that he never got to use.
Nothing better than watching Indiana Jones on a sunday aftermoon with the family
