Ian Astbury...looking and sounding like a combo of Jim Morrison, Steven Tyler, Mick Jagger, and Scott Weiland all rolled into one terrific lead singer.
This one was always at the top of my listening list in the 80s and still is, even now. I just turned 57 and still can't listen to it without starting to dance to it. Great song, so upbeat, so beautiful and so uplifting. Great music is truly timeless and ageless, so listening to it never goes out of style. Thank you for great music and great memories.
Saw them play at The Rainbow in 86 with the opening act The Divinyls. One best shows I've ever seen . Still have their first album to this day. Soon as I heard She Sells Sanctuary on the radio , I stopped at the 1st record store to buy it. The 80s were freaking awesome .....Peace. Forgot to mention , The Rainbow was in Denver , CO... .
Me turned 58 already. Saw them first time in London, then after military service in Finland 1986. Then later in many places around the globe. One of the greatest bands ever.
We still play this song VERY loud at house parties with mates. It is still one of the best tunes ever to jump around to. Brilliant then. Still brilliant now!
The whole band struck me as underrated. I was just a kid in the mid 80s, but they were still playing the Cult (this track in particular) in the 90s when I had become a teenager, but they were always relegated to college/"alt-rock" radio stations and were never played on the 80s and classic rock stations. Weird...
Best decade ever. Simpler more noble times, original music, tv shows, movies... there was this sense of wonder about technology (with the Walkmans, for example) as opposed to now that everything is taken for granted; a sense of comradery with everybody getting along, more face to face time, etc... good times.
Surprised to find out a few years ago he’s one Morrisey’s good friends early on before their careers took off.. I figured it would only be Marr because of the guitar connection..
Cannot emphasize what a game-changer this song was when it came out. At the time rock was divided between synthetic new wave and big-hair metal. And the two sides seldom mixed. This song bridged the gap.
Couldn't say the same, there was so much different rock in the 80s it's just the matter of looking for that music. The Cult was just a band that managed to help push gothic rock into the mainstream.
I must have listened to this one song at least a thousand times over and over again off my cassette in the 80s. Sure miss those days when rock music had such a pure perfect sound.
The 80s were terrible for rock. It was one hit wonders, few real rock bands, hair metal and bubble gum pop with some early hip hop and rap. The 70s and 90s had the rock bands. The Cult were an 80s exception.
Pure unadulterated rock. The most underrated band ever. It still amazes that when I put their music at a party or hanging out, somebody says something like "Oh I love that song!... who plays it?"... sigh.
Utterly brilliant - catch them in their pomp on TOTP Big Hits 1985 on Friday night BBC4 19th February 2024 - set the recorder! Utterly brilliant and the best ever band by a mile!
I'll never forget the first time I saw The Cult. Back in the 80's there was this new network called FOX. It had cutting edge shows like Married... with Children and The Simpsons. It also had a talk show or two. I think one of them was Arsenio Hall Show and I'm pretty certain The Cult showed up on that show and I just happened to be watching. I was blown away instantly by the energy and the look. I couldn't think of anyone that looked like them and they just jammed and they jammed hard. I have been a die-hard Cult fan ever since. They are one of my favorite bands of all time.
What a great Banger and great appearance by the Cult! So much style they had back then! I still rock out to this song and you can dance to it! The Cult are one of my favorite Bands ever! Thanks! 👏🏻🎸😎
This must be one of the greatest rock tracks of all time the upbeat pace and sheer energy , the perfect blend and interplay of maestro's Jamie with the bass Fender and magic Billy with that famous Gretsch semi-acoustic is totally unrivalled , not a chord or note out of place , spot-on timing , in accord and to highlight Ian's meaningful lyrics , made more poignant by present times .Daren't play this super track too much when I'm driving my Integra Type R , it really gets the " Wild Child " going , love to get a reply from one of the band. , make my year , best wishes , love , Natasha
I remember hearing this song for the first time in 1985 while in high school and I was blown away! Flash forward 35+ years later, I am still blown away by this awesome tune! Well, that what happens when a song is "Timeless"!
On a trip to London in 1985 and I walked into the Virgin Record store, I believe on Oxford Street and this was blasting over the store speakers. Unforgettable moment.
They’re lip syncing/playing to the album track and Ian is still so captivating that I don’t care. He was amazing. Mesmerizing. Looking back on the 80’s, one of my favorite things was that we never said “what the hell are they wearing?”. Everyone wore what they wanted, the more outrageous the better, and the fashion was just part of the overall 80’s ambiance. We didn’t care who you were sleeping with or who you voted for and we sure as hell didn’t pose for our own camera half the night. I wish we could go back and grab a little bit of that and drag into the now.
during my very short marriage my ex husband's best friend showed up with a cassette tape in his hand. He said this was an awesome band. I snatched that tape out of his hand and this was the first song I heard. He never got the tape back. It's been my all-time favorite band to this day. And I love this bassist. When he plays the scales in Edie gets me everytime
Don't think I know anyone that didn't love this song when it was released. I bought the album Love on the strength of this and Rain and I don't even think that they are the best songs on the album. Not a weak song on it. They were/are successful enough, but imho there are a lot of bands out there with more success who weren't even half as good as The Cult.
Fuck. If only the clock can tick backwards and somehow I am suddenly born in the 70's to enjoy the 80's. It's just I grew up in the 90's liatening to the 80's. Damn
Saw The Cult play at Cardiff Uni just after "Love " was released. After an hour in the moshpit, I had bruises in places I didn't even know existed! They were the dog's wotsits, they really were. Whenever I hear "Rain", "Revolution", "Brother Wolf...", I am taken back to those carefree days. 😊👍

@@AB-nc7vv yes...lol...mixed w a little Axl Rose
Axl Rose a little bit too.
No distingo a ninguno . Astbury tiene una voz totalmente suya.
Legend.
One of those rare songs that you never get tired of hearing.
Yes, so true. A masterpiece !
Memorable!
True. First heard it at 13, came back at 42
I was a fan of the cult back in the day. But I did my have any mates that were .this track is so cool never get bored of hearing them
Yes and stick it on at a club.. the whole place erupts
Magnífico, essa música fez muito sucesso aqui em São Paulo, Brasil . Todas baladas tocavam essa música.
I don't listen to The Cult often, but when I do, my neighbors do too.
Lmfaoooooo 🤣🤣🤣
Haha yeah good on ya
🤣🤣🤣
Mine are right now
Hey the same here and when the cops show up telling me there has been a noise complaint I tell the cops that's not even loud it gets louder
These guys rocked. Man those were the days. No one will ever make music this good again. One of the most exiting times to be alive they were.
Piss off, boomer. I've heard lots of good music made recently. What a dumb thing to say.
Ok Bob...
I know exactly what you mean. The 1980s were magical.

Still smashing it in 2024. Long Live the Cult.
We still play this song VERY loud at house parties with mates. It is still one of the best tunes ever to jump around to. Brilliant then. Still brilliant now!
Bill Duffy was a riff-machine, and one of the most under rated guitarists of all time. 🎸 🔥
A ten yr old could play the riff in this particular song...
@@James-wj8eqsome comments are not worth making, but a dick will make them anyway…..
Who under-rates him? I sure as hell don't.
@@James-wj8eq That's BS. You mean a 10-year-old Jimi Hendrix?

Billy Duffy has one of the most distinct tones for a guitarist. very underrated
Absolutely

Almost can pull off a Danny Joe Brown

Great band, great front man lots of charisma. He’s got it whatever it is.

Great Tune!!!

Best comment! My thoughts exactly!
You forget NWOBH, Thrash, Black and Death Metal. Punk was also still around. The 80s were great to be alive in.
This is correct.
The Cult is in their own exceptional category. I'm 57 now and have rocked hard with the band since I was 19 in 1984. No other band gives me the high
Couldn't say the same, there was so much different rock in the 80s it's just the matter of looking for that music. The Cult was just a band that managed to help push gothic rock into the mainstream.
One of the most underrated bands in the world!
haha! They have one good song.
Michael Airley they have too many to count. The entire Love album is excellent. Like every single song.
Fuck yes, for sure!
Michael Airley, yep, they are suitably rated
Underrated, the most overrated word on RUclips
This song is still the shit. Loved it in 1985, love it still. Wow 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
No doubt about it
The best song of the 80s .... #1

Been getting speeding tickets since the 80s thanks to this song. Don’t regret a one. ‘Welcome to the layer cake, son’.
Every time this song pops up I’m suddenly going 30 over. Cops should take that into consideration.
Agreed...like you stole it
Kick @$$ 90s rock tone in the 80s! Great song!!
My favorite song from The Cult.
Ian Astbury has a superb voice.
There's a reason he toured with Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek of the Doors.
I didn't think that ever happened because of legal troubles with Jim Morrison's family.

Not so much new wave, but rock with an English 80's alternative influence.

It's Nigel Preston on that song. They sacked him and got Mark to record the rest of the album and mime on the video.
