I've got the same boat with a 8hp Tohatsu, but with the highest pitch prop they make for it. It will go 15mph. a tiller extension helps a ton. Not so squirrelly.
If you want to make that little canoe plan out take 3 five gallon pale with lids and fill them with dry beach sand. place them in the bow one forward of the bow seat and the other to aft of the bow seat and strap them in place so they can't move. your canoe will plane out every time. I know this because I've done it with a Lincoln semi square stern and an older Old town square stearn.
Like Brian Hebert I'm originally from Maine (Central Maine) its not uncommon to see a motor set up on a canoe and if its a square stern it will almost always have a motor of some kind attached to the stern. However if memory serves me correctly Old Town's aren't rated for more that a 5hp motor. and contrary to popular belief with a 9.9 or a 10 hp motor, one person and two five gallon pales of beach sand strapped in place in the bow a 15 ft canoe will get up on plane if the motor is trimmed correctly. (Slide a short piece of 2x4 in between the motor and the transom.) anyone that tells you a canoe won't get up on plane apparently either hasn't tried or spends to much time reading about it...lol
SoN oFaBleepBlop yeah on the back out side between the boat and the motor. when you tip the motor up slide it up under and than while holding the motor lower it in to the desired position. and try running the boat at planing speed. several adjustments may be required to get it right but it can be achieved. once you find the right position you can permanently mount the 2x4 if you want.
Andy Sjostrom Thanks for the reply ...I have a 15.5ft old town square stern canoe just like the one in the video. I placed a nice 2008 5hp Merc 2 cycle and I adjusted the pin thingy all the way so the motor will be trimmed correctly, having done that you can tell its not trimmed enough. Now with the 2x4 should do the trick. Also I was looking into those hydrofoil would I need it ? Or just trimming it correctly will do the trick, i have plenty of weight up front Like a trolling motor and battery along with a person upfront.
I have an ancient Old Town that I'm about to convert.. I believe it's a '73? Really old fiberglass canoe. Looks like new until you see the stern, which is GONE. I rebuilt it to a point and flattened it off. Looking for a decent outboard motor.. I integrated a box in the front of mine, and I can just fill it full of weights or something to keep the hull down.
we run old town tripper XL's, widen them, and put 6-8hp 2 strokes on them....here in northern Maine if you don't have an outboard on your canoe, your the minority.
@eatmydirt85 True, but just someone on the front does a great job, especially if they lean forward. This is just funny to watch cause it sticks up so much.
YOUR TRIM IS OPPOSITE . Adjust your motor angle so the thrust pushes the nose down, then you plane. The trim on this canoe was pushing the rear of the canoe down and deep, resulting in a high bow.
@roundtopsk84eva My design worked! Just be sure to have some way to weigh down the bow, depending on what motor you install.. Greatest little boat for cruising on big rivers.
Dudes! I was up here in Alaska camping on the Delta Clearwater...I saw a kayak on steroids heading away, two of them. Hours later they came back, pretty much double size , thick , and they has little four cylinder Subaru engines with steerable jet units ! I'm introverted so I didn't talk long with them, but the motors were removable for easy transport!
1) Canoes are "displacement hulls", not "planing hulls". 2) You can put as much power on it as you like - it will never plane. 3) Nor will weight, hydrofoils OR fins change that fact.
This boat has just a tad little rocker in the stern. It planes...the water doesn't come clean off the transom but it is over the wave crest no doubt. Planning is not always black and white.

If you want it to plane, invite a drunk uncle fishing for bow weight!
That would be pretty scary out in the wind on a lake with a good 3' chop on it, haha.
Tiller handle is made for left hand, oh dear dude
looks like its ready to self-load in the pickup truck! LOL

Andy Sjostrom is that on the back outside where the 2x4 goes or the inside part?
Please advise

+Andy Sjostrom or make a friend.
👌
It's awesome..everyone should have one
Any registration fees should be discounted by 60% since only a 40% of the boat is touching the water!
Put a Stingray Jr. hydrofoil on it. It will greatly increase stability and get the nose down. You won’t believe the difference!

A planing canoe lol! The Indians are rollin their eyes.
You need a handle extension to sit in the middle. You would double speed.

Fast! 10hp FUNNY, Will that void the warranty? HAHA!

how long is that canoe?
Nice!

fastest pencil on the lake lol
how many horse power can i put on a kayak?
Depends on what kind of kayak but between 15-20 horse
That better be a massive fucking kayak

cool now try it with 20hp
you'd set speed records with a doel fin
@MrComputerGeek70441 Same dimensions as a regular canoe
just ajust the trim to get up on plane
Thats not a 10 hp...pretty sure its a 6 hp.
Now put on a 300hp lmfao
@SSMATT08 yeah I hear ya. I have
get a doel fin hydrofoil. it will keep the bow wayyy down.
Not much of a planing hull I guess....Don't rip the transom off that thing!
@Sarcasticscum when i get my scanoe thats what i want to do let me know how it works!!!
