The Pencil - Dornier Do 17 (with a Flamethrower on back)

- The Dornier Do 17 was a medium-class bomber first used by the German Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War. During the early phases of World War 2, it was heavily deployed in bomber and reconnaissance configurations.
The Do 17 spearheaded the Blitzkrieg campaigns of Poland, France, Belgium, and Holland, demonstrating its combat reliability. Nonetheless, as the war raged on, it began to be overshadowed by more powerful aircraft used by both the Allies and the Luftwaffe itself, such as the Junkers Ju 88.
During campaigns where the enemy had little air support and few anti-air defenses, the Do 17 could carry on its missions with ease. Such was the case with the invasions of the Balkans, Greece, and Crete.
But when the Third Reich faced the British Royal Air Force during the London raids and the rising power of the Soviet Union, the Do 17 lagged behind for its light armor and limited bomb load capacity.
The aircraft was nicknamed the Fliegender Bleistift, or Flying Pencil, for its thin form. Some 2,140 Dornier Do 17 bombers were produced during the war - with many farmed out to Germany's Axis partners.

RUclips is getting wayyyy to comfortable with these double un-skippable ads these days
uBlock/adBlock fixes it. ;)
Does the creator control what kind of ads we get? I get more double ads here than anywhere.
Skip to the end of the video, play again, no ads.
@@justicar5 I don’t think that works.. do you have to let it play through end of video?

I used to make models as a kid, especially WWII one's, and by far and away this was my favourite one of those aircraft, such a lovely looking plane, regardless of which side utilised it.

Mine was, the JU-88.
Can you imagine a p47 bearing down with 8 50’s and you are sitting there with a single 30 cal for defense.
Feels bad when the P47's engine has more hp than the dual engines of the Do-17, while weighing less. The Do-17 was quite out classed by late ww2.
Switch to a Lancaster's gunner position where you have 4x .303 calibre to defend against two to four 20mm sometimes in combination with one to two 30mm, depending what is shooting at you. :)
The problem with DO17 was that it had been first employed in SCW, were most fighters had inferior speed to the modern german bombers, naturally with RAF fighters was another thing.
@FlickeRRing Lightswitch plus one 20 mm cannon, or two, or three, or 1 30 mm
IKR, rifle calibere machine guns in WW2 aircraft were a terrible idea. Might as well have issued the gunners rocks to throw out the hatches and hope the enemy flies into one

Very informative.
I had a 1/72 scale Revel model of a DO17 when I beast a kid .
Hung it with a Stuka and a Messerschmitt BF109 on fishing line from my ceiling.
As my collection grew I hung a Spitfire , a Hurricane and a Mosquito in attack formation above and behind the DO17 ,Stuka ,and BF109.

Thanks for the great video .

Fascinating, I've never heard of this flamethrower before... sorry I mean Flammenwerfer!
Lmao
Thank you guys for amazing videos.
It's another one of the aircraft designs that just looks right. I remember many decades ago, building a plastic model of this type. Spending many hours admiring it's shape and proportions. Most certainly one of the experiences that led to my life long fascination with military aeroplanes.
I agree. What a sweet looking design. I like the fact that it was not originally designed as a killing machine. Will someone ever make a flying replica? I've built one 1/48 scale model but I have a 1/72 model to go with my other 1/72 Battle of Britain set.
I like the part where, you're describing (@04:43), the flamethrower apparatus. Spraying oil and fire, out of a pipe, is like what we've seen done in cartoons, and OO7's movie's, where they spray out the back, of the car☺️!!! It's almost like throwing sand, in your face.
Always love these videos!
The smoke screen provided by the flamethrower is very interesting. I actually thought they used it somehow in ground attack... but the smokescreen is clever.
one of your best videos
A very nice plane, beautiful in its own right. Thank you for sharing.
The Dornier Do 17Z was a beautiful aircraft!

Man I've been waiting for someone to make a video on the DO
Saw footage of the B-26 Marauder in this video and was wonder how that fit in with the Do17. I mean the Marauder didn't make it's first flight until November of 1940 so there is no way it was involved with the fall of France...
The B-26 bombers were used as filler in the video. I do not think there is alot of usable DO-17 video footage avaliable.
The Do17 might be considered the Luftwaffe's equivalent of the Mitchell B-25. That Mitchell was a very versatile aircraft.
I don't think the Japanese military liked it very much.
Finns received 15 (fifteen) Do 17's, not 5 (five). These were donated by Göring himself in November 1941 and arrived in January 1942.
I was about to post the same correction. Altough it was allready technically outdated, it was very beatiful in Finnish outfit ;)
@@jukkasavolainen5620 also i felt the swastika insignia was a neat touch that turned out not to be very popular with non-Axis people
An excellent film as usual. The Do17 was found on the Goodwin Sands, a sand bar not a group of islands. If however, you want to do an "dark" film, the Goodwin Sands are a graveyard of ships and aircraft, a place with a sinister history, so right up your street.😊
Hey my guy, Finland didn't fall...
Finns did well, militarily and politically, too fend off the Soviet Union’s armies, whilst politically convincing the allies they were not aligned with the axis powers meanwhile except military aid from Germany was no mean feat, Sweden’s help had to be downplayed but they helped a lot I believe, whilst remaining neutral also no mean feat, both countries played there hands very well.
Flamethrower go brrrrrrrrr
keep up the great work

@@Shad0wBoxxer hardly, the battle of Britain and France ended about 80 years ago, and the war itself ended around 75 years ago
@@rawhidelamp “hardly “ ohh myy lol but no your right and to think technology has come so far.
Yes cool comment!
Not a surprise, since many modern drones have better power to weigh ratios, and have the advantage of modern aerodynamic knowledge/technologies. The Do-17 was a powerful aircraft at it's conception but like all technology, faded with time.
Would have like to seen some footage of the collectors Do17's, or museum pieces.
Ja! Der Flammenwerfer ist wunderbar!
Good looking aircraft.
Always learn something from these videos. In this one I learned Finland had fallen to the Russians by 1941 as the voice over and map 8:46 clearly show. Tell me more about the Battle of Helsinki? It must have been a fierce struggle.
Flamebomber
Informative but why cut in scenes of Bf110s, Blenheims, and Marauders? A few stats on speeds and altitudes achieved of the bomber and reconnaissance versions would have been useful, but very enjoyable viewing. Thanks for posting.
Its called filler for telling a story that didnt happen this way, one third is cobbled up fluf
I'd wish more did this plane, as it was a major player in the initial years of the war. Overshadowed by the He111, Ju87 and the Ju88 IMO
Effective method of an interceptor; allowing pressurised, flammable oil towards your opponent, not only blinding them but making them incredibly susceptible to gunfire, especially incendiary.
The first plane I saw to start my interest in airplanes of all types
My favorite DO-17 story is a personal one. A friend of the family, about 10 at the time of the Battle of Britain, was in school when they had to climb under their desks during a raid. A DO-17 came down just outside the school, he said the school shook when it hit. The kids were told not to go to the impact site but like kids they couldn't be held back. He said it was the biggest hole he'd ever seen. A crew member who bailed out was being escorted through the village on the way to the military base nearby. He saw them stop and talk to villagers. He asked a women he knew, who spoke to the German briefly, what he said. She said she was surprised because he spoke to her in perfect Kings English! That made a big impression on him.
(07:50) "numerically superior"?
RAF Fighter Command were massively outnumbered by the Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain.
Not at all, Brits made 700 planes a month Germany not even 200.
My thoughts exactly what utter revisionist rubbish.
@@ABrit-bt6ce It would have taken two minutes to check the facts, which is bizarre because there's clearly a fair bit of research into these videos, but there's always a couple of clangers in there too.
@@ABrit-bt6ce
Revisionist truth.
The Brits have manipulated the figure by such devices as counting German bombers but not British ones in the order of battle.
6:19: “the DO-17 recon was fitted with the *BMW* 132N Series ...
Me: 👁👄👁
I saw the Do 17 that was found in the English Channel while it was being desalinated at RAF Cosford.
10/10
I watched them bring in that very last Do-17 in Kent in 2013. Apparently it may have been shot down by a Boulton-Paul Defiant, one of the few kills by that type during the war. Of the four crew, two survived but two were sadly lost. They are buried in the UK and Netherlands where their bodies were washed up. I remember the tyres were still fully pumped up, sticking up almost like new out of the corroded nacelles.
Reading the title of this upload, I couldn't help but think of the typical engineering approach: build it - finding some use for it is not in my job description.
Reminds me if a scene in "The Hunt for Red October" where Ryan asks his Navy engineer friend for help concerning the mysterious outer doors front and aft.
Jack Ryan: "Could you launch an ICBM horizontally?"
Skip Tyler: "Sure. Why would you want to?"
PS: It's mildly interesting, that in English, "Do" is apparently pronounced as an abbreviation, as in "D.O.", while in German it is an acronym, as in "Doe".
The Wehrmacht actually includes the Luftwaffe as it is the combined armed forces the army is the heer
hold on, did he say this plane was manufactured in 1913 as a mail plane, yet got rejected in 1934?
Yes, I listened three times, and turned on closed caption. He said 1913. Damn...
I could do without the breathy, tension-filled affectation on the narration, as well.
@@dmcarpenter2470 I think it's probably 1930 as misspelling or 1931 as misreading the script. No way this kind of construction was made in 1913 :P
@@SaperPl1 Clearly, it should be 30 or 31. That even a script reader says 1913 is laughable.
@@dmcarpenter2470 actually it was 1932 with the prototype flying in 1934. But then I have come to the conclusion that every video the channel produces is filled with these type errors *or at least the half dozen I have watched).

A plane so hard to hit, one was shot down by a Bolton Paul defiant
To be fair to the Defiant, it was a pretty good bomber-destroyer. It packed a decent punch, and with one guy concentrating on flying the plane, and another on aiming the guns, it could direct more accurate fire than a single-seater.
When the bombers had fighter escort, however...

Ju-88s had the flame thrower too, but mostly they weren't fuelled to save weight.

The DO-17 was effective for what was designed for. This video did not indicate the very light fighter escort coverage with night bomber raids made over England.
Read Adolf Galland's autobiography. Sometimes when he was being pursued and couldn't shake allied fighters off his tail, he would suddenly open fire at nothing. The unexpected shock would make the pursuing fighters peel-off for a moment, giving him a break to escape. Sometimes shocking and surprising your opponent can be useful, even if it's not actually lethal.
Do a video about the He-111
A good documentary, but as a Finn historical errors bother me. Goring donated 15 (not five) DO 17 bombers in November 1941 during The Continuation war. The Finnish Air Force had also planes from The Netherlands, France, Italy, England and the USA. According to the statistics the Soviet Union lost nearly ten aircraft when Finland lost one.
The documentary included strange graphics that seemed to suggest that the Soviet Union had occupied Finland. This did not happen at any point. It is worth getting to know the history of the Winter War.
Whether or not Finland belongs to Eastern Europe could be discussed.
Would like to see it in flight.

Sadly, no intact Do-17's survive. It was one of the most interesting planes of the war.
It's more than 80 years since it's first flight isn't it? 87 to be exact...
If I was the french, I would be happy to take theB-26 against DO17 (as per the video). Speed alone, I would take them out blazing my 50s. I don't know how they had them before the US.
Ha! The way some of them tailgate round here, I could do with a flamethrower in my bumper. 😏
Flame thrower? Why didn't I think of that? 2019 Chrysler?
Hmmm, I thought I read somewhere that DO17s were also converted into night fighters.
I think your thinking of Pathfinders, upengined versians that went in first to mark targets
There were some Z-7 and Z-10 variants used in the Nachtjager role, but the aircraft really lacked the performance for the role. If an aircraft got past the Dornier, it couldn't overtake it.
At least Monogram put out a nice 1/72nd scale m0del of the Do 17 back in the late 60's.
The DO 17 was not created in 1913!
The first German plane to fall to the Polish airforce was a Do17.
The mounting for that single 7.92 gun looks terrible! Aiming would be a nightmare!
Do you supposed this is where Clarkson got the idea for a flamethrower on the back the the Snowbine Harvester?

I just found out that a 1940 Cornwall crashed Pencil had an observer with the same name as dad's cousin. I wonder if the observer was his father??
We (Yugoslavia) had them even before the German invasion and then they were kept by the Independent State of Croatia to use against fighting the Partisans.. Anyway, as the Yugoslavian Partisans were the only resistance movement to (of course, with allied help) liberate their country from within (hence not being a subject of any side and making it possible to make its own decisions).. Anyway, they were the only resistance movement in Europe to have an airforce. At first, having leased Spitfires and Hurricanes, they captured more and more nazi planes, among others, the Do-17 (K).. Interestingly, the last battle in Europe happened in Yugoslavia, on May 25.. A captured Partisan Stuka were used against collaborationist forces on May 26 1945, escorted by 2 Partisan Messerschmitt Bf-109
The black shadow from above that bombed Guernica... Sorry no good feelings with this one!
