I hope the population in western countries wake up in time in masses. In my country there will be elections this year but the issue of the war in Ukraine is not talked about in their election campaignes. left wing or rightwing the war is not on their agenda in Belgium. I will vote for a pro Ukrainian party. The thing is I don't know what the opinions are.about help to Ukraine because they don't talk about it in concreet terms only vage intensions of support if they occasionally do anyway. The good thing is nobody as far as I'm aware of supports Putin at least not openly. It feels to me like this war is not happening at all. People in public don't mention it in their conversations. Nobody talks to me about Ukraine not even my own family. People do complain a lot to eachother and me about the rising prices the high taxes, the bad state of the public transport healthcare, electric cars and many more political toppics but not the war. All quiet on the western front.

As both a British and a soon to be Portuguese citizen I am both appreciative and grateful for the honesty, clarity and decisiveness that each of the Baltic States have brought to the table. All have revealed themselves to be jewels in the crown of NATO and the European Union.
All have reminded us that the smaller countries in Europe are both precious and vibrant contributors to well-being and future success of the international community of nations on this continent. Their contribution and leadership have been indispensable.

“Slava Ukraine” is a greeting to the Ukrainian nationalists who fought on the side of Hitler in the Second World War, killing and expelling tens of thousands of Poles, Jews and Hungarians from Ukraine. Now the head of this movement, Stepan Bandera, is honored in Ukraine. You are shown only one side of this conflict and only that which does not discredit Ukraine. You know no more than 1/3 of the whole situation and this is enough for you to support anyone.

*The question of who has to pay the consequences of Russia's war is extremely easy to answer,* because Russia has violated international law. So Russia must pay reparations for *all* the consequences: *The reconstruction* in Ukraine, but of course *also the costs that the war has caused for the allies,* because without Russia's war they would not have arisen. Completely logical and simple. *Russia certainly doesn't want to pay that, so* the only way to do it will be through punitive tariffs, which will then be used to pay back these amounts over the years.

Is it some new trend that PM's and presidents who are bad at domestic politics are good at foreign politics and vice versa? Our Kaja is not much loved here in Estonia but her support towards Ukraine and understanding of Russia are both outstanding. And we are really somehow disturbed that many Western politicians are hiddenly still ready to make deals with such bloody monster as Führer Putin is, their short-sightedness is awesome. Even if Russian tanks will never enter to Germany or Italy or Greece, that doesn't mean that those countries will retain their democracy and influence within the "new World order", where dictatorships, wars and corruption will conquer the "new brave world".

You have made a very interesting observation & asked a good question! I have been following politics for 50 years, and I think I can offer some possible answers. I will apologize ahead of time, because my three answers require a good amount of words for me to make my thoughts clear.
      1. Governments have limited resources. There are only so many talented individuals willing to take a sabbatical from their job or interrupt their career to serve the nation as a politician, and there is a limited amount of money to hire expert consultants to properly inform every representative in government who is responsible for managing a ministry in the government. Also, leaders & top diplomats only have so much time to deal with the large number of 'problems' that exist in domestic & foreign issues. It is quite common for a Prime Minister/President to move around the most talented & effective people in their parts & among government workers to deal with the most pressing domestic or foreign issues, so unfortunately, some issues may not receive the attention or funding that other issues demand. So, even the most motivated, patriotic & honest political leaders & government departments will often be less effective (temporarily, or during their entire term) when dealing with certain responsibilities.
2, In 'western' democracies, each political party & their election campaigns are funded by donations from ordinary citizens, rich & powerful citizens, citizen organizations & corporations (and, in some countries, foreign donations too). Not surprisingly, these 'donations' are not altruistic, but come with the expectation that the political party they support will advocate for additions or changes in legislation, the greatest efforts by the government, etc which are most advantageous to the individuals/families/organizations/corporations which made the donations. Of course, the most generous donators will expect that their agenda for the government is made the highest priority. The end result is that most governments have an agenda which will be a mix of what is best for the people & the global community, AND the more self-centred expectations of the most generous & influential donors to the party that forms the government. So, even the best-intentioned leaders (Kallas does seem to be this) and ruling party will have to focus its limited resources toward agenda items which may not be, in the grand scheme of things, what should be the highest priority.
      3. Finally, here's a reality that affects our *perceptions* about the successes & failures of all 'western' democratic governments. While many 'western' democracies may have a government-funded national media outlet, the majority of media is privately owned. These media corporations are, like all corporations, are focused on making profits & paying nice dividends to their shareholders. This means that the number one priority of all privately owned media is attracting advertizing income, and the most viewers/listeners/followers the media corporation can attract, the more the corporation can charge advertizers. Also, for better or worse, the media knows that "bad news sells", i.e. people tend to be attracted to news which has a highly-emotional & highly-relevant focus, and this is maximized when the news invokes feelings of worry, fear, frustration, anger, envy, and a desperate hunger to know more about the issues. Furthermore, it is the news which affects the person consuming the news that will attract the most attention. That means that politics is almost always guaranteed to attract consumers of news, so all media corporations endeavour to have content about the government as often as possible. On top of that, all media corporations will focus primarily on areas where there is 'bad news' with the government, so the media will look for areas where the government is underperforming, is making controversial changes, etc. So, it's not a surprise that - depending on the government agenda, domestic/foreign problems, etc. that a government will receive the most coverage in domestic politics if that is where the most 'bad news' can be found, or in foreign politics if that is where most of the 'bad news' can be found. In fact, I would suggest that even if a country the best government on Earth, which is doing a very good job in both domestic & foreign circles, the media will do its best to 'create a crisis or controversy' in order to guarantee that they are still attracting viewers & maximizing their advertizing income!
I hope this has been helpful. :)

My history teach me that NATO bombed us 1999, they harshly violated territorial integrity and suverenity of our country. Second European Union and NATO they are not partners, their politics are based on dictation which certain country must obey. Example they say we must do that, do that than we might join European Union, we fulfill certain dictation than new dictation, everytime some new demand and European Union give us nothing. We waiting more than 20 years to become members of European Union. And after you realize that all was lies, and that we will never join European Union. Maybe you can ask same thing from Ukraine, tell them that they will be member of European Union if they say that Crimea is not Ukraine. Double standards western bustards. In one word west is not realible. My country should stop joining European Union and turn toward free world countries such is Russia. Glory to Russia and Putin's army ❤🇷🇺Z

Interesting intervies, PM Kallas might be the strongest leader in EU right now, she does seem intelligent and able to take decisive action, good for Ukraine too. It is unfortunate she is not the leader of France or some other more powerful country, but leading by example does matter.
To Kyiv Independent, I think the style and editing was good but your audio is lacking, compare how crisp and clear Kallas sounds and the echo when Istomina speaks.
Probably you need to use a better location, the angles and hard surfaces creates a lot of echo. Moving the desk out from the corner and maybe add some sound capturing spiky foam plates outside of view can do wonders (if money is really tight you can always use cheaper materials, normal foam mattress kind of works in a pinch too.)

Russia was cornered into a war with Ukraine a war Russia did not want.
But as Americans could not tolerate Soviet troops, military bases and offensive military hardware in Cuba, including missiles that threatened the US state Russia cannot tolerate NATO troops, military bases and offensive military hardware, including missiles that could reach the Kremlin in minutes at Russian borders with Ukraine that would be an unaceptable threat to the Russian state.
It is so grave that Russia is prepared to use nuclear weapons to avoid such a threat to materialize.
Unfortunately Ukraine accepted to be the western instrument to fight this war and for that the Ukrainian people are paying the haviest of the prices.

Individual countries are free to provide aid on their own, but the EU as a block has its own position to evaluate. In this context providing aid through the EU budget should be understood as part of a security package for the block as a whole. All members share the same security policy on top of each individual country’s security policies.

Somehow Russia will pay. They will maybe not sign a treaty and be willing to pay. And other countries will probably need to pay in the beginning to rebuild. Just as Germany was rebuilt after ww2. But longterm Russia will pay everything, maybe with the help of customs fees or any other economic solution.
