Bach - Mache dich, mein Herze, rein from St Matthew Passion BWV 244 | Netherlands Bach Society

  • The aria 'Mache dich, mein Herze, rein' from the St Matthew Passion (BWV 244), performed here by the Netherlands Bach Society and conducted by Jos van Veldhoven for All of Bach. The St Matthew Passion tells the story of the last days of Jesus. He is betrayed, tried, crucified and buried. The lyrics were compiled by Picander (the pseudonym of Christian Friedrich Henrici), probably in close consultation with Bach himself. For their theme, they took the story as told by St Matthew the Evangelist. As different groups or people have their say, the singers get different roles - Christ, Judas, Peter, a slave girl, the pupils, the high priests, the people and the soldiers, etc.
At key moments in the story, Bach and Picander added chorales and arias as a reflection of the biblical story. The action is suspended and the events are placed in the theological context of Bach’s day.
The chorale lyrics and melodies come from the Lutheran hymn book, and were well known to the congregation in Leipzig. Even though Bach’s harmonies were new, everyone would have recognised the melody and the words. The lyrics for the opening and closing choruses and the arias were brand new, however. Both the arias and the chorales often link up seamlessly with the evangelical words.

Although I don't think that you need to be of a Christian religious persuasion to appreciate this as a musical composition or as a performance, it truly felt to me like a worship experience simply to listen to it. Bach did say, "The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul."

This lovely tender aria comes towards the end of the Passion just before Jesus' burial by Joseph of Arimathea. Has anyone else noticed that like so much of Bach, this is a dance? You could do a waltz to this - or rock a baby to sleep. Look at the players swaying to the rhythm. Utterly beautiful divine music and words.

"Make yourself clean my heart . I want Jesus to be buried deep in me. May He find sweet rest in me forever and forever....World get out. World get out. Let Jesus enter."
The Saint Matthew Passion is about facing the reality and tragedy of death and finding meaning and redemption in it. I think in this aria Bach was making the message personal for himself and his audience. In the aria the singer is compared to a grave for Jesus to be buried in and find sweet rest forever and ever.

As an amateur classical singer who focusses mainly on Liedkunst, I have started doing some Oratoria. This is one of the pieces I am currently studying and it is such an intricate and difficult piece. For me (who is not used to this genre) it is the technically the most difficult piece I have ever worked on. If I compare it to pieces such as der Erlkönig.
What is an entirely new concept to me is that in this music there is no room (nor requirement) for "putting emotion" in the singing. If sung plainly, it is actually the most beautiful. If you compare this performance to the sheet music, he follows everything precisely, which results in this amazing result. And it is sung so effortlessly (or at least it looks and feels that way.)
    Absolutely stunning.

How can I name my favourite solo aria in the entire Matthew Passion -except at a moment? But if pressed, for me, it has to be between this, Erbarme Dich and Aus Liebe. The wonderful thing about Mache Dich is you can actually sense from it that this whole work is drawing to its close, is winding down, with a subsiding apotheosis akin to 'post coitum triste'. The Passion of Christ is now 'vollbracht' and we are no longer earthbound, the sounds are more ethereal and celestial. It hints, the marvellous thing , only hints, at the ultimate resolution of time spent on earth.

I don't know what you are used to but this is a 100% accurate Tempo from a historic informed perspective. Of course there are plenty slower versions (e.g. Richter, Gardiner or Rilling) but they did not understand the true inner core of Bach from an 18th century perspective!
At the end it is taste but there are accurate performances and illegitimate versions as one fellow musician uses to say. From our perspective historically informed renditions, such as this, are the accurate. But a modern musician would see it different and would use a symphonic/philharmonic orchestra and opera singers (Wagner style).

@@tobiasstudtheol The *fact* of the matter is that *no one today, including you, really knows at what tempo* Bach, etc. performed his music. Period. So called "historically informed perspective" is nothing but educated *guesses.* There's no such thing as "100%" anything when it comes to early music performance, since *we weren't there, and no recordings are available.*
I was expressing my preference, my opinion, just as you are - and it was *too damned fast.*

The strong determination of a true believer to get down to work and get the job done is sung and set to a pulsating dance full of love and verve. This is more a heart-felt work song than a mournful funeral dirge. No?

      I would like it a LITTLE BIT slower . . . like a cradle song . . . or a swinging dance tempo. It´s rushed.

It seems very fast to me. Is it reasonable to sing about burying God’s son at the tempo of a gay waltz? Excellent voice, I must admit.
