Great video breaking down my pop’s song. He was an extremely understated /underrated finger picker. Sadly, much of it overlooked. Check out “ easy to be free” for some classic Rick Nelson. Be safe, be well. Sam.
I was a big fan of your dad’s from when I was a little kid. He was always one of my favorites, definitely my favorite as a child, and I still love his music to this day.A VERY underrated artist. I was so happy to see him inducted into the Rock and Roll HOF. I just wish he would have been there to see it.
Always loved your dad‘s music. Even though he was a bit before my time since I was a Beatlemaniac when I heard his songs on the radio, including, It’s Late, I thought the rhythm was fabulous. Love the tune to.
What happened to that O&H collection you were working on? Hope the project is still in motion. There aren’t many moments when I remember exactly where I was when something significant happened. The day Elvis died. The day Diana died. 9/11. And the day your dad died.
Thank you for comments on your Dad. He was just a couple years older than me so I was glued to tv all through Ozzie & Harriett years had his pictures all over my walls. Very talented family. Much love to you & rest of family
I met James Burton and he and his lovely wife, Louise, gave my son and I a private tour of his studio. It was mind blowing and surreal! He played a lot of guitar for Rick Nelson and was “instrumental” in making a great sound on those recordings! That meeting and tour was a highlight of my life! I will never forget what I saw and heard but most of all, James and Louise are the most wonderful souls you will ever meet!
"If you gotta play at garden parties... I wish you a lot of luck." That's such a mellow relaxing song. I love the soft plucking and gentle thumpity rhythm. I love some Ricky Nelson songs: "Hello Marylou" "Traveling Man" "Poor Little Fool" just a few favorites. Great job Fil!
Very nicely done on your part Fil. Ironically, in that time frame, many people assumed that Rick Nelson had some sort of "free ride" because of his TV show parents, etc., when in fact, he was pre-judged and dismissed by tons of people and had to work harder because of preconceptions about his "entitlement". He sought to find his independence and his own voice, and eventually WAS recognized and credited for his talent, though too late to reap the rewards. Even his children were dismissed and overlooked trying to follow in his footsteps.
I saw Rick in Vegas, the January of the year he passed. His show was AMAZING...Rick sounded good and looked good. His band (R I P) were TIGHT and enthused. Total rockabilly BLISS. 10 months later Rick and the band were gone....so sad. PS: Jerry Lee Lewis was also on the bill. He was VERY intoxicated...Rick Nelson was the STAR of the show that night. Thanks for this video and the memories.
My band was working when Rick was sadly killed. We dedicated Garden Party to him at our show that night. It was so sad. Thank you for your appreciation of all music. You are an old soul and a light of hope that all these wonderful songs will not be lost❤❤
Great analyses !! All your stories were spot on. I'm Tom Brumley's wife and enjoyed your thoughts on Rick. He was very underrated all around. Thanks Rolene
Rick was a real talent and a musical icon. l was a fan. Enjoyed this performance! Garden Party was a great song. Such GREAT lyrics about the Madison Square Gardens concert when he heard booing. He had the last laugh writing Garden Party and earning a gold single with it. Hitting Top Ten in the USA and #1 here in Canada.🇨🇦 Had the pleasure of seeing Rick live here in Canada in the late 70s. Such a talented performer and great show! Got a standing ovation and 2 encores that night. Canadian respect for a class act! Enjoyed this analysis and anytime you get out the guitar is always appreciated by this guy. Thanks Fil! 😎🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦🇨🇦
Ricky Nelson was so talented and handsome in his prime. Thanks for showing a wide variety of artists. There is likely a generation that never heard some of these very talented performers.
When I was stationed in Germany I had an opportunity to see Rick Nelson and his wife, the best looking couple I ever seen since the photo of my parents on their wedding day.
I love, love, love Rick Nelson! Thank you so much for this reaction. I grew up watching him, in re-runs, I was only 13 or so when he passed. I, my mother and family, were all so devastated when he died. He was such a wonderful performer, a real talent. I still listen to him regularly and appreciate your videos, which not only help keep him alive to his fans, but may introduce him to others unfamiliar with him. Sigh....he was so handsome and his voice so beautiful. It brings a tear to me eye to this day that he was taken away from us in such a terrible way.
Fil, as always your good as Gold. I have a great deal of respect for Rick Nelson. Here is a man who could have spent his life living in Los Angeles, acting in, and producing situation comedies, but, instead he followed his heart going from club to club playing music. After his time as a teen idol it would have been so easy for him to go back to television. It certainly would have fattened his bank account. I remember reading an article where a woman went out to the local airport (probably in the 70's) to see if she could get a glimpse of her school girl crush. When she gets to the airport she sees Rick Nelson unloading his own equipment off of the small plane the he and his band had flown in on. This man worked for a living and he loved it. You gotta respect that. See Fil you're a lot like Rick Nelson. You work your butt off at something you love. Please never take it for granted. As always God Bless!!!
An entire generation of us grew with the Nelsons. They were required viewing at our household. I have an entire collections of tapes and my player no longer works correctly, it tends to eat tapes.
Oh Fil I don't know who enjoys it more me watching you or you explaining & playing. Great analysis loved what you said. What a great voice he had 👏. RIP Ricky Nelson.❤ I think I will go & listen to him now. Stay healthy & get your rest Fil. ❤
Hi Fil! One of my all time favorite singers of all time! I understood his being upset when people wanted the oldies at Madison Square Garden...I also understood lots of us loved his oldies...just made me rethink that I need to love the old, but still appreciate the new songs! We lost him way too soon! A very talented singer...he was so loved! His dad even played on some of his music...one talented family! Just sad to lose such a wonderful guy! ✌️
Rick Nelson was upset because he saw the same fate happen to the Everly Brothers. The Everly Brothers were not only moving on with the music but contributing great new material as well. While still popular in the UK and Europe, the American public ignored the Everly Brothers’ new material, preferring to keep them “locked in The Fifties”.
Thank you for another video on my all time favorite artist. Also got to give credit to his great band - Denny Sarokin on vocals and guitar (still writing and recording today, check out his Brighter than Babylon cd), Jay De Witt White on bass and vocals, the great Steve Duncan on drums and vocals, and the immortal Tom Brumley on pedal steel (Tom previously played with Buck Owens). A lot of people thought Rick's records sold just because of all the exposure on television, I think his success after the tv show proves that wrong . He was a real musician - if anything, acting was more like a hobby to him. When he discovered rock and roll, that was what he put all his focus on - performing live and recording. He worked at becoming a good singer and guitar player; he made the transition to writing his own material, saying the things he wanted to say in song. Great guy, great talent.
Great analysis Fil! I haven’t listened to this brilliant song for so long....brings back a lot of memories! I always liked Ricks style of music, a sensational songwriter blessed with an incredible voice! Truly talented! Cheers Mario! 😀👌🤘
Thanks so much for including Rick Nelson again. Interesting the way he played the song, made it so much better. I remember when he was booed and wrote this song later. I always loved his music, especially Honky Tonk Woman and Garden Party.
There's a video of the band covering the 60s soul song "Gimme Little Sign" and Rick takes some tasty electric solos after the chorus instead of his lead guitarist. He was a talented musician who left too soon.
You are such a good teacher Fil. You could say an artist usually plays standing on their head and I’d think “ If Fil says it then it must be true”!! Thank you again:)
I was slightly young but my brothers and sisters watched Ozzie and Harriet. I remember the white picket fence and the smiles. This song was quite the sensation when it came out. Thanks for you explanations about the techniques, you are not driving people away, you are actually helping people understand why we should appreciate the talents these musicians have.
I really like your epilogue at the end of this piece that aptly describes the over-commercialization imposed by the “industry” on artists in an attempt to push the monetary envelope for the short term gain only. Art cannot be so pushed and be sustainable. I’m always delighted with push back on this.
Grew up with his parents TV show. Thought he was just a pretty guy we loved. No idea he was seriously good. Thanks for the new respect for this guy who left us too soon. Thanks FIL
Our little beach trailer at El Morro was in the next cove down from the exclusive enclave where the Nelson family owned a weekend home. Of course, I had a massive kid's crush on Ricky and was always hoping that one day I'd spot him walking on the beach, he'd see my stunning 8 year old self... and the rest would be history! Loved this analysis of his fun guitar playing and all the respect you gave my first true love. Rest his sweet soul.
I've always enjoyed Rick's music and his acting too! It was very interesting to hear about the references he made in this song. He always made performing look so easy.
My gosh, another great analysis of an often overlooked, underrated singer, musician and songwriter, Rick Nelson. Thank you, Fil!! I am a big fan of Chris Isaak...and his music/sound always reminds of Rick Nelson's.
"The music that you want to make will be the music that it seems like you should be making, because you can enjoy it and above all, it's going to feed your soul. Even if nobody else likes it, you're happy because you're making music that you like." - Wise words my friend, wise words...
Great analysis of Rick Nelson's fingerstyle technique; thanks also for providing perceptive contextual information to further our appreciation of his performance. Finally, my thanks your final commentary. Your idealism is heartwarming.
Great pick, Fil. Agree with all the comments and your analysis. Rick grew up in the spotlight, in Hollywood, where “show business kids” make movies of themselves and don’t give a f-- about anybody else...😉. But I never heard a bad word about Rick Nelson. David Cassidy, also a kid of Hollywood stars, got cast in the same teen idol role 10plus years later. He couldn’t wait to move on from the “Partridge Family” where most of the “band” actors faked performing; only he and his stepmom, Shirley Jones, did their own singing. He had some teeny bopper hits at that time, was a real looker like Rick, cover of “Rolling Stone”, never really got beyond teen idol status, but apparently reveled in the “perks” of the position to excess. Also died young from liver disease, a consequence of such excess. I love the message in the song as well. But the dilemma the artist feels to hold fast to his vision vs “sell out” for marketability-that is, make a living and put food on the table, is a difficult one, and many have “compromised” and I don’t think all have regretted it. I heard a very respected and successful actor say he makes the blockbuster teen action schlock so he can fund the independent film that’s much more risky but also more meaningful to him. Sounds like we all compromise at times.
My brother and I went to see him and the band at the John Wayne Theatre at Knott's Berry Farm back in the day. We sat right in front of Tom Brumley (my brother was a fan of his), and had a wonderful time! I grew up with the "Ricky" on tv, but loved the later version even more. Thank you for posting this, Fil...love watching your guitar teaching aspect in these videos as well. 🧡
Fil - Great video. Thanks for taking a look at all music, not just contemporary, 2000's stuff. We boomers love hearing your observations as a young man on some of the music we grew up with and loved. Rick Nelson was part of our musical history, and was probably underrated, even though he sold a lot of records. He was breaking new musical ground along with Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, etc. He obviously loved making music.
I was always an Elvis fan, but I was amazed at how relaxed and easy Rick made a song seem, even when it was not. One of my favourite vocalists of all time, along with Dion DiMucci. All were (are with Dion, New album coming out soon, Check Joe Bonamassa's site).
Just subscribed this evening. Truly enjoy watching your immense knowledge and joy when you analyses which ever artist you are reviewing. I'm 66 years old and only play a few chords on a guitar, but I love watching your face when you analyses the older country and pop artist of the the 50's and 60's. Thank you.
Another excellent video, Fil! So thrilled to see you analyze Rick's music; I believe he was such a wonderful performer and greatly underrated in his time.
Thanks Fil nice review ! The album Garden Party is one of my favorites, very under rated album. I grew with his change in music thankfully & appreciate him very much .
Great analysis video, Fil. I think because the song sounds so mellow, many people would not be aware of the nuanced performance. The pedal steel is very well used in this song / performance. Taste is important with such a sound cutting instrument and many recordings (hello country), show no taste and kill performances by bulldozing over the other instruments and singers. Anyway, good to see Rick and his band.
Fil, thanks for posting your great and insightful analysis of Rick Nelson videos. He was always one of my favorites, and he probably didn’t get as much credit as he should have, but he did influence a lot of great artists in rock and roll. I’ve learned so much from all your videos. Keep up the great work work my friend.
Rick is really good at keeping on key with his voice and guitar. He stays in time with his voice and guitar. Backed up by great musicians that kept on key and stay in time. The group queen who have recognition are always off key and out if time. I was getting ready to board a plane and saw the headline in '85. Bought the paper and saved the paper for 10 years because, I've always been a fan.
Hey Fil, 'Ol Rick, from the Golden age of television and music, one of my favorites, good one. Great analysis and like I've said before, the guitar really helps with your explanations, when necessary. One of my go to channels, good job Fil. Stay well, best, C.
ahhh, the joys of being old (63 today). I remember the album this was from,,,,Les Paul Custom. Nearly cried nye when he died. Just a tyke for the hits.
Fil, Thanks for doing an analysis and a historical presentation of one of my favorite artists. I also heard a story that Ricky Nelson told and I hope I get most of it correct. One time when Ricky was just starting his career and becoming famous. He gets a call from Elvis Presley. And of course he thinks it's one of his friends playing a joke. But then he is finally convinced that it's actually Elvis Presley. So Elvis tells Ricky to medium at a certain bowling alley not far from where Ricky was living at the time. I even believe he was still living at home with his family. So Ricky has on down to the bowling alley. And waits for Elvis to arrive. A little time later here comes Elvis. He runs up to Ricky Nelson and gives him a hug and says I love you man. And who in the world is your guitar player he's great. Ricky said I can't believe that happened to me. Well anyway I just want to say thank you for another fantastic and informative video. God bless you and all you love.
Such a bittersweet 70s time capsule~ 50s handsome teen idol trying to be his true self in adulthood~I remember playing this record at a THIRD grade birthday party! Wow~
Even without the early tv show and the teenage heartthrob thing, even before he enjoyed the benefits of the marketing and promotion of him as a tv star, Nelson was going to be a major star as a musical performer. Had he been a musician only, perhaps his musical accomplishments would have been even greater, but both Rock and Roll and Rockabilly Hall of Fames say enough. Always a cool 50’s vibe, and a story-telling voice.
I love the all the musicians you choose to analysis, Fil. You have done some that I completely forgot about. When I hear them I think to myself, how could you have forgotten them?! I loved them so much! Music can take me back to a place in my past. It’s such an incredible feeling! Thank you!
Not sure what Nelson’s “rather drive a truck” reference is, but that was purportedly what Elvis was told when he auditioned at the Grand Ole Opry, because he wasn’t received well. The Opry manager suggested that he might stick to driving a truck. His “failure” was a rockabilly version of Bill Monroe’s Blue Moon of Kentucky. That rejection led to Elvis going on the Louisiana Hayride with Farron Young, which he eventually closed rather than open because no one could follow Elvis. 😊
Thank you Fil for another good one.If you look back at clips of his band in the very early '60's,you will notice a young Joe Osborne in the background on bass!
Great video breaking down my pop’s song. He was an extremely understated /underrated finger picker. Sadly, much of it overlooked. Check out “ easy to be free” for some classic Rick Nelson. Be safe, be well. Sam.

Many of us that grew up watching the Nelson on tv
Loved your Dad and miss him. Very happy yt plays his music.

What a brilliant line !
I met James Burton and he and his lovely wife, Louise, gave my son and I a private tour of his studio. It was mind blowing and surreal! I'm sure you know James played for Elvis too, great guitar player!

Thanks for sharing your wonderful memories with us.
J See yes, I did know that, for sure! I saw things that would blow your mind and heard the stories to go with them!
I swear Fil, every single one your videos is like taking a Masters class. Appreciate you and what you do for so many. ✌️
So true.
What a compliment. But very true. And he always does it with a smile on his face too...🙂🎸🎶
Truth. He is the best thing on youtube right now. I lucked out on finding him.
Thank you for featuring Rick Nelson. He died way too soon, there was so much more music within him. Still miss him playing.
Love those early songs too. So rhythmic so infectious.
Grew up with Rick Nelson on TV, big screen and the radio. Gone to soon. More talented than most. Gone too soon.
Good one as always Fil!
Wow thanks for that. Brought back some good memories.
Great song, great performance and great analysis.
Always enjoy 😊 your analysis & reactions. Your smiles at the inside lyrics of the songs. One of my favs! 😀✌🏻
I was always an Elvis fan, but I was amazed at how relaxed and easy Rick made a song seem, even when it was not. One of my favourite vocalists of all time, along with Dion DiMucci. All were (are with Dion, New album coming out soon, Check Joe Bonamassa's site).
Great analysis and lesson too! I always loved the message in this song, definitely one to take to heart and live by. Thanks Fil
Very enjoyable and educational as well. Thank you !!
Just subscribed this evening. Truly enjoy watching your immense knowledge and joy when you analyses which ever artist you are reviewing. I'm 66 years old and only play a few chords on a guitar, but I love watching your face when you analyses the older country and pop artist of the the 50's and 60's. Thank you.
Thanks!
Another excellent video, Fil! So thrilled to see you analyze Rick's music; I believe he was such a wonderful performer and greatly underrated in his time.
My favorite Nelson track! Thanks, Fil. Oh, and I didn’t know the Hughes-Harrison reference. Thanks, again.
Thanks Fil! Rick was an under-appreciated talent! The background stories of the song content is priceless.
Thanks Fil nice review ! The album Garden Party is one of my favorites, very under rated album. I grew with his change in music thankfully & appreciate him very much .
Wow, this was the very first 45 vinyl record that I bought when I was about 11 years old! Brings back memories!
Well done 👍 I grew up listening to stuff like this.
Another great show Fil.Thank you.
Thanks!
Hey Fil, 'Ol Rick, from the Golden age of television and music, one of my favorites, good one. Great analysis and like I've said before, the guitar really helps with your explanations, when necessary. One of my go to channels, good job Fil. Stay well, best, C.
You have just explained to me how an individual could struggle with different chords because of different shapes. Facinating, ♥️
ahhh, the joys of being old (63 today).
I remember the album this was from,,,,Les Paul Custom.
Nearly cried nye when he died.
Just a tyke for the hits.
Happy birthday, Glen! I hope you have a good one. RAWK!!!
Happy birthday, fellow Gemini! I turn 72 on Saturday!
Wow~
Hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart ! One of my earliest musical influences teaming with Mr Burton✨👏
I saw Rick and the SCB in the the early 80s they were awesome, really tight!
Superb technical analysis, why can't I play like that? Thanks once again, Fil.
Professor that was a fantastic music information! I wish I could take guitar lessons from you!! I thoroughly enjoyed the history too! You're awesome!
Thanks!
YW!
Really well put together song, has a good story and a really good hook in the chorus...
Thank you Fil for another good one.If you look back at clips of his band in the very early '60's,you will notice a young Joe Osborne in the background on bass!
growing up listening to country radio, this was the only ricky nelson i ever heard played on the radio
Great commentary. Well done.
