As far as 1967,I was a BBaller/freestyler 10 years old,not a burner! Although the gangbangers on the corners in Brooklyn would be Burning each other! I witnessed many jams in BK wear I would be and watch Burn and Get Burn! Yes some can't check their own ego's that's why the history gets MISCONSTRUED! THIS BURNING/ROCKING ARTFORM is alive today! Yes it was a Underground/Street culture throughout NYC! I've been clubbing since 1970 and still Rock the bball at 59! Kurtis Blow always gives credit to James Brown as The number one BBoy.He said everyone copied and wanted to be just like James Brown in BlackCulture. IN the 60s Gangsters were the ones killing these dances, you had to be a good dancer to get girl. The Temptations, Jackson5 were so big on TV. They called it Rocking when it was just dances Black America was doing everywhere. The Popcorn, Rock Steady, The Break down, The Pony, 4Corners and the 2 step. Everyone Please go back and watch early Soul Train, even the 1970 year you will see how we grooved, Lockin was first shown on Soul Train. That is what they called rocking.
late 70's & early 80's this evolved to a whole new level & game cause the majority of breakdance defining moves did not come into existence till the early to mid 80's...everybody should know that already it should be common knowledge its kind of beyond me why it is not.

The book "Droppin' Science" by William Eric Perkins (Temple University 1996) has articles about Hip Hop dance. The point is made that both Breakdancing and Capoeira have origins from dances from Angola and the Congo, shared origins, rather than origin B Boys going to Capoeira classes, because none of them have so far said they did Capoeira.
The hand spins seen in Break Dancing were seen in "Three Man Dance", an early 20th century Kinescope sequence. So these spin moves were present in African-American dances which long pre-dated any possible Capoeira classes or performances in New York.
The spins were largely forgotten by the time Hip Hop evolved during the late 1960's to mid 1970's; it was the third generation of B Boys such as Frosty Freeze and Crazy Legs who introduced them to Hip Hop dance from about 1977 onwards, when the original Black Spades had started to get jobs and not dance so much.
By the time we have the films "Wildstyle" in the early 1980's and "Beat Street" in 1984, B Boying and Breaking have developed more acrobatically from what the Zulu Kings were doing in the mid 1970's.
Watch a Soul Train line from 1971-1973 to see a more upright Funk style of dance, there are no floor spins.
I met and talked to the Legendary Twins in spring 2015. They told me a mind-blowing fact.
The only dance that they had seen before doing their B Boying was that they had once seen James Brown at The Apollo in the late 1960's. They never saw Stormy Weather or any of the Jazz movies which had early examples of Jazz Dancing which indirectly influenced B Boying. They worked out the moves in the parents' living room during the week then performed them at the weekend at Herc's jams. Yet when they saw these films later on in life, they were shocked at how similar their moves were to those in the films. So what we see is a vibe...something passed through generations, something present in the spiritual and musical DNA of B Boys.
I have learnt this by talking and reading and watching interviews and footage, but I was not in the Bronx in the 1970's, so if any of what I have written above is not correct then I humbly ask to be corrected.

There are only so much ways in which the human body can move, that's why movements will eventually resemble of other arts. Also a trained dancer only needs to see a movement once to incorporate it into his vocabulary.
Sam Boogaloo, Popping Pete, crazy legs, Don Campbell etc came up with different styles of dance but they wouldn't consider it breaking or b-boying
Peace to the true heads Do keep in mind that the term "break dancing" isnt even what cats from back in the day called what they did. Rocking and going off was basically the phrases that were used when you had a cat in a jam who could really get busy. Freestyling to an extreme was more or less what was called breaking...and the term breaking wasnt behind a dance style but was used to describe anything next level. There were many Bx freestyle cats and those who folks may not know of but those who are known know who influenced the style and even their style. Give a shout out to heads like Little Johnny....not going to get into the shout outs...but Yawll know Wallace D!!! There was a movement more than any one specific person that anyone can say "started" the whole phenomenon. Cats who even preceeded the Twins whp certain real heads let the world know about back in 82' in the book Hop Hop. Alot of what was going on was "underground"...and not necessarily in one part of the Bx. So theres untold stories that go beyond what you have been getting. Peace....

He is was from Philadelphia not the Bronx, NY Darryl McCray brought Graffiti to New York. So. I t can be said that Philadelphia helped Invented Hip Hop and all African Americans in the United States.

The cornbread story is exaggerated and misleading.
His point about Graffiti not being hip hop is key, is it part of hip hop yes of course but it also extends beyond that, several kings especially in the 80s were rock heads, punk rock heads as well as of course some hip hop heads... plus graff as we know it predates hip hop by at least a decade... the whole concept of graffiti being part of hip hop was a marketing gimmick by Holman and Fab 5 for Club Negril night they did that featured Bam, RSC and NYCB to the downtown audience...

That is a lie because the others Boroughs had that energy to and not just NY. All African Americans were dancing and listening to Music.
Being a late 70's Brooklyn Up Rocker and 80's Graffiti writer, (Rist.1.Top) I was a b boy first and so with that being said, I feel that many dancestyle elements inspired us. From African Cuban latin rhythm to Chinese acrobatics in early kung fu flicks. We took notice in the Nicholas Brothers, Bills Bojangels Robinson early moowalk and Sammy Davis jr windmills to a new hight. So as a b boy, history shows me that break dancing didn't start in the bronx. It started thousands of years ago in Africa. It then birthed it's basic steps to generations that followed us into Hip Hop. I did an interview with Prince Ken Swift some years back, and till this day, I can't credit one borough or crew with creating breaking. We have a whole bunch of influencers that paved a way 4 us. So lets study the true history before we credit one particular band. Peace.

this is crazy because around the 80's bboying wasn't only happening in New York it must have spread fast, because i met OG's that were deep into this emerging culture out here in norhern california.. and thats amazing because this was way before internet.. so some folks must have moved out here or perhaps was close to some of the folks out there from new york, and basically carrying the torch over here.. but i have a strange feeling somehow call it syncranocity whatever it was happening all over.. and again there was no internet so folks were literally traveling and continued practicing this physical artform.. also i'd like to add Bikers who did burning, do a lot of traveling i mean thats the nature of a biker gang.. so yea it's incredibly gangster how this shit started

Respect.. but id have to remind that elements of breakdance was introduced from brazil - in a tour to USA by Capoeira masters in 1950's-60's - well documented. :)

ANd as a brazilian i can see some of the BBoy steps used i capoeira - clear as daylight.

@vieshanblacksloft426... smh.. no what I'm gonna tell you is... all that rock uprock toprock... came into Breakdancing WAAY LATER...toprock came into hiphop AFTER the original B.BOYS RETIRED... we did a whole video covering this... ruclips.net/video/vw2ODkGuPKM/видео.html around 57:27 the original b.boys at Kool Herc and Coke la rock parties never called it uprock etc... uprock toprock was part of the latino rock movement and was done across town..in a different area of The Bronx.. so if the original first B.BOYS new heard of "up rock toprock" then obviously uprock and toprock IS NOT the origin of b.boys breakdancing...however uprock and toprock DID TRANSFORM BREAKDANCING during the very late 1970's/1980's...
@TheCulture..Since1971 herc went to my school Casanova went to my school and flash... I lived this Era. I was there i wrote a book the Kings of Dance its about where rock came from and the Latin Hustle I disagree with you we will leave it at that go talk to Willie Estrada he was there with me. I bet he will disagree with you also .. he danced at the rock competitions .. and we been around since 69 ... everyone want to take the credit for dance fact of the matter is Rock came from the gang members and tk say top Rock is not up rock or rock well then . @vieshanblacksloft426 Again.. the ORIGINAL B.BOYS say they didn't know anything about up-rock toprock etc so...uprock latinos was not in Kool Herc and coke la rock early parties which is where b.boys breakdancing took form... willie Estrada was not an original b.boy... so I realize it may be tough for y'all finally hearing the truth... but the truth has to be embraced... and if you have that false info in your book.. you should revise and change the false info in your book.. I know.. its tough
