Seems like when the ship-wide heart-attack thing started, Data should have stepped into command and ordered them to desist and/or maneuvered the ship out of there.
He wasn't ordered to. And there is no guarantee that firing everything at the enemy ship would have remedied the situation. Further, if more action was required, the rest of the crew would be in no condition to comply with the Bridge's commands. But then,... they are never consistent with how much of the ship is and is not automated.
It’s nice and all that Data was tending to Picard, but considering they were under attack, shouldn’t he have manned the weapons station and begun firing, considering he was the only one unaffected?
I feel sorry for the familes on board the Enterprise just doing there thing, and getting subjected to one bizzare experience after another each week!!!...LOL!! Would love to see a compilation of that!!
Star Trek Middle Decks: "How was your day at school son?" "My friend Tommy was sucked out of a hole in the hull during that last attack" "My friend Sally was turned into a sludge monster at that last alien planet we explored. "I'm running out of friends"
The writing for aliens of the week tended to be so poor (especially by the time Voyager launched) that they simply wouldn't have cared about nuking families. Did we ever see an alien ship pull its punches to avoid destroying the good guys?
Sunad (Soonad?) tipped his hand a bit too much. A little less info and more talk about their laws (but not why they exist or what the "guest" did) might've served their ends.
Great episode but seriously, how is Data incapacitated by not breathing? He doesn’t breathe!!!🤦🏼♀️ It’s like he was just imitating the crew (“oh they’re being hit with some weapon that makes them not breathe…I think I better play along too…”)😂
I finally have a theory that works for me as many have brought that up. Data is stated to have some organlike functions as we know he was designed to be uh "fully functional" as he describes it. Further more we see the aliens can effect enterprises systems as well. Though it isn't confirmed it would neatly explain this "apparent blunder" as it renders it plausible in my mind. It's fan theory, yes. But would make it sound reasonable for to reasons why he too was affected.
Logical explanation that'd make doing that make sense; Fake being affected by the weapon such that you can surprise the opponent later by demonstrating you are in fact, unaffected.
How did Starfleet/Federation not know about the Zarconians? You’d think they would know about most if not all the minor governments and empires that are of similar technological capabilities
I can't believe there wasn't a musical act in this clip! It's like they didn't even know how to make Star Trek back then. Thank god the current showrunners know better.

They don't even mention how the other dude was able to choke the crew, through the shields even?
Seems these guys are already pretty advanced from an evolutionary standpoint. Shouldn't Starfleet use all their resources to find a defense against these guys or other species that might have this power?
Against the extreme isolationist who probably have a few worlds? Probably not. There are a tonne of advanced races out there, most don't really bother the Federation. I don't see the guardian of Edo invading anyone.
Hyper powerful, hyper competent Alien race of the week never to be seen or mentioned again. That's a common failing of a lot of Star Trek.
@@unlimitedhornetworks Sometimes for sure. But I believe star trek is at it's best when it uses these to show the force isn't the only way to win.
@@mnaglich And in a single episode, that's not really a problem. When you're looking at the series, or even the franchise from the 1000 foot view, it becomes a frustrating tendency. That and corrupt admirals, are two things that just frustrate me with this franchise.
Choking scene conveniently left out the classrooms full of children writhing on the floors of the lower decks.
Every time the Enterprise goes to Red Alert and gets shaken around, there are classrooms full of kids scared out of their minds and with no idea whats going on.
@MattBurrill
Yeah. Gene Rodenberry didn't think the concept out very well. Even with the planned separation of the saucer theme, the Enterprise-D gets surprised by danger so often that separation almost makes no sense
2:10 What was the name of that weapon? The Darth Vader beam.
Thats quite the "outfit", shows the whole offering!
Seriously. What were the costume designers thinking?
"I will give you 2 hours to comply."
Oh brother.
I could never figure out what kind of weapon was used on the crew of the Enterprise, anybody know?
a fart ray
@@michaelcarlon1831 oh
Far as I know they never explained it, or even attempted to. It would be an interesting weapon that works through shields but only targets the lung function of various different species on the ship without hurting anything else.
Lv 3 hack on the O2 room.
The Force. I saw it on Empire Strikes Back, Vader killed Admiral Ozzel through the TV. Clearly, this Zalkonian was a Sith.
So what was the weapon they used to force choke the entire crew of over 900 people, and through the shields no less?
also, John seems to be damn near godlike powers, yet neither he nor his race are mentioned again.
Well, "The Force", obviously. 🤣
You didn't recognize the obligatory "nazis bad" episode that every TV show is required to do at least once?
They are almost always stand alone episodes.
Twilight zone overdid theirs, tho, they made it an hour long for a 1/2 hour show, so you can't see it in reruns now.
The appropriate response would have been to Mace Windu that ship... "They're too dangerous to be left alive!"
To be fair, God-like beings are almost a dime a dozen in the Trek universe
@@AWriterWandering 🤣 ya, it is one of their main "go to" character types when trying to push their social propaganda.
The only other time I saw that many people choking was after the Premier of Joni Loves Chachi.
This was a good episode but the Zalkonian Strangle Beam was very silly.
"He is a dangerous criminal!"
"Uhh... the one who tried to kill us was you, the one who saved us was him. The dangerous one here is YOU."
Love how Picard and Crusher stare in judgement at the very end.
why is data not firing on them while the bridge gags
I woukd love to have seen Christopher Walken or Mathew McConnehay on TNG.. Anyone agree? Apologies if I've spelt Mathew's surname incorrectly.. And I'm sure that I have
Seems like when the ship-wide heart-attack thing started, Data should have stepped into command and ordered them to desist and/or maneuvered the ship out of there.
I'm bothered that the other two people on that Zalkonian bridge didn't react at all to their commander being beamed off their ship!
Just another Tuesday. 😅
And he soon found out that the universe rests on the back of a giant smiling koala.
02:40 Beverly: Thank you! Now if you'd be so nice to do this a good thousand times more, we're good to go.
He used the computer systems to spread his healing all over the ship
Yes I've seen it, thanks. But how should she have known beforehand.
Why the hell was Data on the floor??
Unknown, never before seen alien spacecraft surprisingly has 18th century Earth maritime navigational lighting.
So does the Enterprise. If you look on the warp nacels, there's a red light on the left one, and a green light on the right one.
Probably a feature of the universal translators.
@@specialk9424 The Enterprise is an Earth ship. You get the difference?
So many episodes I've never seen. I gotta watch this one now
Ah, so he's an X-Man 🙄
"We are the space retro nerds, our ship is controlled by a C64, and our bridge tastefully decorated with Space Invaders box art"
One of my favourite episodes!
It's just wonderful how every alien race enjoys the exact atmospheric conditions so pleasant for us as well
so why didnt Data fire everything the enterprise have when he saw the crew compromised?
He wasn't ordered to. And there is no guarantee that firing everything at the enemy ship would have remedied the situation.
Further, if more action was required, the rest of the crew would be in no condition to comply with the Bridge's commands.
But then,... they are never consistent with how much of the ship is and is not automated.
"We don't want relations with you!" 😂
That's what she said too.
Star Trek Middle Decks:
"How was your day at school son?"
"My friend Tommy was sucked out of a hole in the hull during that last attack"
"My friend Sally was turned into a sludge monster at that last alien planet we explored.
"I'm running out of friends"
The writing for aliens of the week tended to be so poor (especially by the time Voyager launched) that they simply wouldn't have cared about nuking families. Did we ever see an alien ship pull its punches to avoid destroying the good guys?
They could have put a cup on that dog.
1:54 'It is not our policy to interfere in the affairs of foreign cultures..' This never gets old 😂
2:21 always wanted Data or Jordi to provide an explanation to what ever it was they got hit with.
Why did Data start choking?
When?
he wanted to be more human and saw what everyone else was doing and just went with the flow.
@brolydictcumberbatchmontou401 He went with the flow in the middle of an apparently successful attack against the entire ship?
Sunad (Soonad?) tipped his hand a bit too much. A little less info and more talk about their laws (but not why they exist or what the "guest" did) might've served their ends.
And then they disappeared and we never heard from the ascended beings ever again.. thanks!
Instead of Zalkonian Commander, the prisoner’s rank is Zalkonian Commando
His white jumpsuit seemed a bit tight in places. They must have filmed that scene first thing in the morning😮
3:21 Data was just kneeling over Picard rendering aid, instead of taking command of the ship.
Reminds me of the struggle of the mutants in the X-men universe
"It is not our policy to intervene in the affairs of other cultures"
01:56 His face saying: well that is clearly bullsh!t.
Great episode but seriously, how is Data incapacitated by not breathing? He doesn’t breathe!!!🤦🏼♀️ It’s like he was just imitating the crew (“oh they’re being hit with some weapon that makes them not breathe…I think I better play along too…”)😂
Data was unaffected.
You apparently missed the part where Data is kneeling next to Picard checking on him. He wasn't affected.
@@FatherofheroesandheroinesFair enough, I did too until I reviewed.
Logical explanation that'd make doing that make sense;
Fake being affected by the weapon such that you can surprise the opponent later by demonstrating you are in fact, unaffected.
This episode looks awesome! It must have had a bad synopsis or something, there's no other reason why I would have missed it!
Those Galaxy-class ships sure are something. They get beaten down by every ship they come across. This time they lost before even firing a shot.
How did Starfleet/Federation not know about the Zarconians? You’d think they would know about most if not all the minor governments and empires that are of similar technological capabilities
They clearly stated that they didn't want contact with other species. Do you realise how vast space actually is?
They gonna find the Alterans and Ori on the others side.
I can't believe there wasn't a musical act in this clip! It's like they didn't even know how to make Star Trek back then. Thank god the current showrunners know better.
I am Sleestak of Velcro !
1:42 that guy on the left looks like he's taking a piss 😅
So much can be learned from these episodes. ❤❤
Sunad = ego, John Doe = enlightenment🙏 once again Star Trek reveals spirituality❤
They must have had a very powerful Sith Lord on that ship to choke everyone
The mass force choke thing always bothered me in this episode. I get that an alien power might have a weapon that could take them by surprise and affect the whole ship but they should've come up with something other than mass air removal.....
It wasn’t the air being taken it was a psychic force projection
It might have been something that paralyzed the muscles of the chest or diaphragm, preventing the crew from being able to inhale or exhale.
...and that's the day Professor X decided to leave Star Fleet and start a boarding school for to harbor youngsters experiencing similar evolutionary transmutations.
So ascension to Q grade manifestation is perhaps inevitable? Probably going to need to write a lot of new prescriptions.
This an episode i missed...dang it.
great episode regarding the metaphor of Jesus and the Romans
Kind and generous people. Not people who execute people in bars, Kurtzman.
Anyone seen my roll of quarters? I had them in a old tube sock in my room on deck 3.
Maybe that what outfit is a bit “showy”.
Must be very "cold" on the bridge! 😂
It was a psychic weapon that made them think they couldnt breath
Anyone else catch the part where data got up off the floor as if he was effected by alien ship captain breathing stunt or was it just me who caught that
How many times some random planet civilization has tech equivalent to the Federation flagship...it baffles me.
How was Data affected by the alien weapon (can't breath)? ;-)
John casts Major Restoration, level 47!
it's super effective!
the ship was later used as ship for the Voth in Star trek !
The Zalkonian crew just kept going about their business when their captain was warped away!
