You could not ask for a more perfect interpretation than Vanzo's. Every word he sings is clear. Along with that diction we get legato, lyricism and French style with use of head voice. How unfortunate that so many tenors past and present sang this as if it were a verismo opera.
It's ChlostAwa (Daniele), not ChlostOwa. This discreet singer had a short career going at the Paris Opera/Opera-Comique in those years, singing Olympia in the Chéreau production at Garnier, and Véronique (Messager) at the Opera-Comique (sometimes even on the same night!). If you happen to have a video of the telecast of this Veronique, I'd most grateful. Francine Arrauzau was singing Périchole in Caen, when she had a fatal car accident on the way back to Paris, I believe.
@@quequitoAR a colleague was conducting the car. She felt unwell (it was just after the last performance of Perichole in Tours, a Pâques matinée). She went to the other side of the road to vomit. And apparently didn’t looked when she walked back to the other side. I know precisely this spot along the Loire, and accidents are not unfrequent there (poor visibility). It was a traumatic shock. And Tours’Opera never played « Perichole » again, until three performances scheduled for next december…
Francine Arrauzau was a tragic loss to the world of opera . She wins all hearts as Charlotte. The cast including Vanzo at his peak is excellent.
I love his voice!

Arrauzau was singing Perichole in Tours, in a matinee sunday performance, and was hit by a car a few hours afterwards. It was in 79, I think.
Arrauzau's car stopped on a highway, she got down to check the engine and got hit by a passing car.
