In Ukraine, the number of citizens prepared for territorial concessions to achieve peace has increased significantly - results of a survey by the Kiev International Institute of Sociology (KMIS)published on the organization’s website. Similar surveys are conducted regularly at the Ukrainian institute. At the end of 2023, the willingness of Ukrainian citizens to make concessions rose to 19%, in February 2024 - to 26%, and in May 2024 - to 32%. Accordingly, the proportion of those who oppose any territorial concessions has decreased.
The survey was conducted from 16 to 22 May by telephone interview based on a random sample of mobile phone numbers. The question was formulated as follows: "Which of these statements regarding possible compromises to achieve peace with Russia do you agree most?". Respondents were asked to choose one of two statements, which were proposed in different order:
- "In order to achieve peace and maintain its independence, Ukraine may give up some of its territories";
- "Under no circumstances should Ukraine relinquish its territories, even if the war is prolonged and the preservation of independence is threatened".
It is important to recall that in May the poll coincided with active offensive actions of Russians in Kharkiv, CMIS.
Last year, a similar survey was published by CMIS in October. At that time, 14% of the population was ready for territorial concessions, with 30% of citizens noticing the West’s fatigue with the Ukrainian issue and the desire to force Ukraine into negotiations.
