  • Becoming more self-sufficient starts with learning one new skill and then another and another until you have more than you can count. Then, share with others who are learning.
Milking a family milk cow gives our family 5+ gallons of raw milk a day, which can be used to make any dairy that we need or want. Feels like food freedom!

I am excited to see all cheese making. You explain things so I can really get motivated to start trying my own.

Would you please send me in messenger the links to the cheesemaking documentaries you watched? Also she looks so good! Our cow calves and we are struggling keeping her body condition up.

Sure! We have been feeding more grain than I'd like just to keep her condition up.

What type of cheese would you like me to make?

I like this style of video where you chat cow and cheese things while milking. I’m always looking for helpful tips to improve my process. Will your cow stand for milking anywhere even if she runs out of food? Mine needs a head lock or else she is like “ok I’m done eating, I’m out of here, let me go” 😅. Of course she is not halter trained, that would probably help.

Thanks for the feedback. My cow will walk away if she runs out of food too 🤣 When she is in our stanchion, we have a rope that we latch behind her that keeps her from backing out. If she is finished eating and tries to back out and can't she will follow up with pooping so... I have to hurry lol

I train my ladies to stand patient for milking then they get their grain. I don’t think I’ll ever go back to graining while I’m milking. I got tired of the beat the feed milking. Halter breaking would make a difference for sure. Happy milking ladies! ❤

Do you think I can still Halter train a 5 year old that will only do what I want for food?

@@olgamika7734 I wouldn’t personally at that age. Especially if she’s food motivated.

Edam and red Leicester cheeses are both good and relatively fast to make

I machine milk thanks to some nerve damage and boy does this look so much more peaceful! Thanks for sharing. We're dealing with a subclinical mastitis that is throwing every thing off. Very frustrating to go through all the milking effort for yucky tasting milk.

Thank you for your loving kindness in your speech, Jesus is Lord! My Clabber learning is going a little rough, I think my house is maybe too cold? What temperature is your kitchen?

I'm in the process of making a cloth bandaged cheddar 😬 I think cheddar is on of the most versatile cheeses to make 😊

My kitchen is probably a little cooler than the average kitchen, too, maybe 65-68°F. The first clabber took several days to thicken up.

@@DryHollowHomestead mine seemed to be really sour so when you said yours was sweet in the video that's when I questioned mine. Thanks for the reply.

Why do you need to rinse the pot with cold milk before washing? I haven’t been doing that. 😬

    • @DryHollowHomestead

If you are using stainless steel it will get milk stones in the metal.
