    If everyone else is like me, the current 16.6k views are from about 35-50 people that just watched this over and over again while rebuilding. I bought this reel from my neighbor maybe 20 years ago and after using it a few times it has just been sitting. Finally pulled it out from behind everything and got it apart and cleaned up. The anti-reverse pawl had some wear so got another one coming before it goes back together. Thanks for these videos!

    Thanks a bunch for this and your other videos. I took apart, cleaned, and lubed my late grandfather's 112h from your video on it, and this one will be next. I inherited several old reels from him and these videos are going to allow me to put them back into service. Thanks again... these are top notch!

    Sent my 209 to Dennis because of this video. It was my Dad's flounder reel and is at least 25-30 years old and has not been fished for at least 25 years.
    Dennis had it back to me in a week, and it is phenomenal, like new!
    Great job!

    My gosh. Mesmerizing video. I would not have taken my Penn 209 apart without stressing until I saw this video. I actually watched it twice before starting then two times more during. I got a stopping point because I had to order parts. My fiber washer is kaput and so were my drag washers. But I can’t wait to get to the point where I can see my reel function as smooth as this one. What an enjoyable video. What an excellent guy. Thanks Teacher. You got a PhD in reels. I so appreciate this. My Penn 209M came from a man who is long gone and was a dear friend and father figure. I’ve been wanting to do this rebuild. Thanks thanks thanks.

    Hey Dennis. Thanks man. Success! I got my new drags and new fiber washer. Now complete and she spins like new! Took some “monkeying” to get level wind guide shield and level wind in place! But success. This old reel came to me from a very important guy in my life who used it a lot in fresh water. But it definitely was dry and surface rusted. I did it for memory to him and now I’ll honor him and catch some fish! Now I have to find a great pole to match it to. Thanks so much. You made my day man! Your video was really helpful.

    Have a question.I picked up a 209 but on the level wind loop, it will go over to the non handle side and stop and will not return. You put it in free wheel and it will go back and forth like it should. The only way it will return with the spool locked out of free wheel is to put side pressure on it back towards the handle side and then it will return and go to the non handle side again and stop again. I have not had the reel apart yet and just wanted to see what I should be looking for. Thanks. By the way, great video.

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  2 года назад

      This sounds like a damaged line guide pawl that will need to be replaced. n point on the pawl is probably worn. Check the side plate of your reel to find the spare pawl screw and remove it to find out if you have an extra or if you will need to buy one. If you have one, unscrew the cap on the line guide and swap out the parts and then let me know if that solves the problem - Dennis

    Thanks for all you do in these videos, you are my goto guy fir anything Penn reel related. Gotta question, what reel handles interchange with the older Penn 209s, 309s, etc. Looking for more modern power handles to customize some older reels. Hi Dennis, I am trying to put one of these reels together. i’m pretty much at the end of my rope here. I get as far as getting the dog and spring in. When I slide the bridge back into position and screw it in, it’s tight when I test it. I have tried it multiple times and the same thing. if I leave the side plate screw loose, I can spin the spool with my fingers. I can’t find what i’m doing wrong. The dog is behind the bridge plate, the spring is correctly positioned. I’m following your video to the T. If you can advise, that would be great. Always appreciated, Thanks you. TommyS

    I have my granddad’s Penn 209 that I know is probably as old as I am, or nearly. I really enjoyed watching your video on how to take it apart and service the reel. Is there a way to know when it was manufactured and date the reel? Thanks for your advice.

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  3 года назад

      That is pretty hard to do as the reel was introduced in the early 1950s and is still sold today. Some clues - if it has a plastic spool it is before 1960. The football or plastic handle means it is an early model. Rubber handles are later. If it says made in the USA, it is before 2006. The reel did go through several changes know as the Peer and Peerless. The side plate colors also vary. Sorry I can't help pinpoint it further - Dennis

    Hi Dennis! Shout out to you from the west coast! Your videos are a bounty of knowledge. I recently picked up a Peer 209 and a Jigmaster 500S from a Garage Sale and while the 500s seems to perform sufficiently well, the 209 seems to have trouble spinning as the spool both looks and sounds like it rubs against the ring on one spot as it spins. Could it be the ring or the spool? Also, it is stuck in Knuckle-Breaker mode, though I'm sure I can easily fix that by following your process. Either way, thank you again for your videos! Absolutely priceless to the fishing and preservation/historical communities! - Duriel

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  2 года назад

      Something is wrong inside. The A/R dog, which prevents the knuckleduster, may be trapped in the main gear and causing the spool issue. It is not the ring. That reel needs to be taken apart. The video you have watched will show how it is done.
      Thanks

    HI -Just getting started with reels and your videos are great! I have a 109 that is in great shape but i have a question...neither reel crank knobs do not turn. They appear to be plastic. should they turn on the shaft. IF so what;s the best way to break them free without damaging them?
    Hopw you get this and thanks for your help.

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  8 месяцев назад

      They should turn on the posts. The problem is that the plastic has swollen and is pinching down on the post. That cannot be repaired. You may try heat, like a heat gun or hair dryer, To expand the plastic, but you will run the risk of burning the knob and possibly causing a fracture of the plastic parts. Some folks have tried to soak the handle in a penetrating oil or rust buster. That approach has minimal success - Your best bet is to get a replacement handle. Thanks for asking - Dennis

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  4 года назад +1

      Jeff - most of the clickers cannot be replaced as they are peened on to the side plate and the replacement solution would be to replace the entire side plate. For the 209, you can also drill out the old on and replace with a new click stud held in with an "E" clip. Some of the new 209s actually have that as part of the assembly. I believe hose are available through Mysticparts.com. I do not have a video to show how it is done. but I will add your request to my list. Thanks for asking and thanks for watching - Dennis

If I jiggle the handle back and forth it will continue to reel as it should until it returns to the far right just before it stats to go back to the left. Occasionally it may stop somewhere in the middle. What’s it doing? Or what’s it not doing and how to fix?

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  4 года назад

      You likely need to replace the line guide pawl. It is probably worn or has a broken tip. If it is not the pawl, then you need to make sure the worm gear is turning. If it is, then check the tracks(grooves) in the gear to make sure they are uniform and not damaged or course. If there is damage, you would also need to replace the worm drive. - Dennis

    Hello, currently refurbishing an old Penn Peer 209. If I don't have an ultrasonic cleaner, what can I use instead? Thanks!

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  4 года назад

      You don't need the ultrasonic cleaner. Use a general degreaser like WD-40 or other non-abrasive cleaners to soften or dissolve the old greases and dirt. Then use a series of paper towels, took brush, cotton swabs, etc to remove the old greases. You can use a metal polish on the chrome pieces and very fine steel wool #0000 to help clean the metal parts. - Dennis

    This reel has multiple oil ports with spring loaded ball bearings, what do you use to oil the reel using these ports? I've tried with the Penn 2oz bottle size (it looks like a bottle of eye drops) but it just makes a mess.

      Best to just depress the ball with a tooth pick and use any oiler.

    Hey there I’m having problems with a 209 reel I have. The spool seems to be really sloppy. If I hold it tight to the none handle side it feels amazing if it moves over tho the handle/drag side it won’t reel at all. It almost as though it’s missing a washer. I see almost like a hexagon piece on your spool on the drag side when it’s disassembled mine does not have this part. Is that what I need?

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  4 года назад

      I use a small screwdriver for the hold down screw that is less than 1/4 inch size if that is what you are asking. The main handle screw with the ridges uses the standard Penn handle wrench, but in a crisis, you could use a channel lock pliers.

    Dennis quick question how do I get the free spool level re attached. Thank you

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  4 года назад

      I am assuming you still have the eccentric and spring in place on the gear side of the reel and that you are finding that the mounting stud on the outside has slipped to the point where you cannot hook the lever over the edge of the side plate and the bottom of the arm over the stud. If that is the case, reverse the lever arm and place over the stud. Pull the lever as if releasing, or setting the free spool until you are about half way through the rotation. You will find a balance point where it will not snap back or forward. When you are there, take the lever arm off and flip it so that the tab is over the edge and facing properly. You can then set the screw in the stud and you should be good. If you are asking about reinstalling the eccentric and spring, let me know. That is more detailed - Dennis

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  Год назад +1

      No idea. This is the first time I am hearing it. The A/R is on the gear side and the clicker button is one the other side, so they do not touch or interrelate at all. Dennis

    • @ragnarragnarsson3128
      @ragnarragnarsson3128 Год назад

      @2ndChanceTackle I am now thinking it is either a "feature" of older penn reels or a common modification of some kind. I recently bought the 209 and a 350m from different sellers and they both do that. The clicker works actually but you can't reel in with the crank while it is engaged. But the spool turns freely.
