Everyone said Catching This Fish was IMPOSSIBLE... 😯

  • I couldn't believe what happened while fishing this BEAUTIFUL river... and the last fish absolutely blew my mind! This is one of those fishing trips I won't forget, with a good handful of rare and unexpected fish/species. I love lure fishing rivers, especially trout fishing and salmon fishing. With trout season about a month away, I thought i'd have a go at trying to catch a salmon in Winter. Everyone I spoke to said it was next to impossible to catch a salmon at this time of year, in the river i was fishing. Fortune favours the brave though, and we were definitely rewarded for taking a gamble!

    Well done George. Nice fish. I found this on the net . As the smolts prepare for ocean life, their appearance also changes, from the dark colours of the fry to the silvery colour of adult salmon. This helps them hide in the light conditions of the surface waters of the open ocean, where there is no dark shade from overhanging trees.😊

    Cracking mate well bloody done, nothing better to fish for! It would’ve been a kelt, I learnt this by catching one last season. Salmon change their colours for spawning - not because of the freshwater or river. The river they spawn in may have some influence on the spawning colours they have though. Easiest way to tell is their body conditions, much likelier that the second fish was fresh. We’ll have to have a salmon session this season

    • @adventurefishinguk
      @adventurefishinguk  7 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks a lot mate! I always thought it was because of the water like a sea trout. I reckon the second one is probably a kelt too but very well mended! Yeah we will definitely have to get out salmon fishing this year 👍

    Spring salmon fishing is tough and really limited to the big rivers . If you get a real Springer, you have no idea how much energy and strength they have in the cold water. I've accidently caught kelts on luncheon meat , worms and even Campbells meatballs on the river Annan in Scotland whilst chub fishing in February over many years ...Never happy to catch them as they are so nutrient depleted that the energy of the fight could finish them off .

    I don't know for sure, but I believe the colour salmon turn in fresh water can vary due to water clarity. If the water if clearer, they turn darker to aid in camouflage and breeding colors. In murkier water, they can stay silver because visibilityis low.
    It also depends on how close to the sea you are, it can take a week or more for a salmon to darken so if they only have a short journey they can often complete the cycle before they darken up.

    Great video George, to answer your question about salmon being coloured in fresh water.
    A lot of people believe that longer salmon are in fresh water it turns the colour on them but that’s not entirely true, a salmon does go coloured in the river but it’s due to getting their spawning colours & getting ready to spawn so more so to do with time of year than how long being in freshwater. Once a salmon has spawned & becomes a kelt they lose their spawning jackets and return silver like the ones you’ve caught & have been in freshwater the entire time, hope this helps.
    Same for baggots/Rawners aswel they turn back silver once the urge to spawn has gone.

    • @adventurefishinguk

    Fresh run salmon are silver. We used to call them bars of silver because that's what they are worth. When they get stuck in the river with no floods that's when they go black. They are usually female that are black and the pink ones are male. Think I got that the right way round 🤔💚💛❤️

    I live in Rakaia in New Zealands South Island the Rakaia river has a well known Salmon run starting in November and the main run in February/March. The fish stop feeding when they enter the river and catching them is very tough. It is only their aggression that makes them snap out at lure that bounces past their nose.

    Yo buddy, unfortunately both kelts and small finnock, salmon change colour due to getting closer to the spawning time, it's got nothing to do with the water colour, as soon as the salmon have spawned they start turning silver again that's why you can catch kelts silver not coloured up. Cock salmon turn more darker colours and become more aggressive so protect the eggs and chase other cock fish away from the hen, hope that helps.

    Brown Trout and Sea Trout are one and the same, it just depends whether they travel down in to the sea or not and in the places where the trout have the opportunity to do so most of them will. And in any area which holds salmon, the trout in the same area can be considered sea trout.

    Both kelts, once salmon have spawned they use the remnants of their energy to repair their fins, the re-silver in preparation for heading back to sea, sometimes they start to eat again which can make them more aggressive and easier to catch… ‘well mended’ is the term….they put a bend in the road but they don’t count

      It is the same species as a brown trout, just one which has migrated to sea 👍

    • @johnbruce2868
      @johnbruce2868 4 месяца назад

      @@austinevans9880 Very confusing, isn't it! The two are supposedly the same species, Salmo trutta, but with different habits and life-cycles which is how tradition and science distinguishes them. Whilst the brown trout remains in rivers, the sea-trout migrates to sea returning to the same river to spawn. Although there is, apparently, no obvious physiological difference, IMO, the difference of habit suggests they should be a different species. I wonder if anyone has DNA profiled them yet? I'll find out. I can ask my son who works for APHA. He'll know.

    • @johnbruce2868
      @johnbruce2868 4 месяца назад

      @@austinevans9880 Look up... Dorte Bekkevold: Genetic stock identification of sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) along the British North Sea Coast shows prevalent long-distance migration. ICES Journal of Marine Science (2021). He has identified "candidate genes for migration tendency". Although both brown and sea-trout are physiologically identical, as I wrote previously, the differences in habit suggest they should be different species. Currently they're both classified Salmo trutta. DNA profiling will, I'm reasonably confident, gradually reveal the genetic differences which differentiate one from the other, as the above paper indicates. DNA profiling is a new science. It takes time and there is fierce competition for research funding. That places our particular question lower down the hierarchy of necessary knowledge by comparison with, for example, migratory birds introducing viruses and mosquito vector capacity in the UK. We'll just have to await developments.
