    I've gotten lucky with those center 4 intake bolts in the past by pounding a 9mm socket down onto them and being gentle with the ratchet

    I recently bought a 78 F150 with a 351M running and driving. The guy I bought it from ended up using a gantry crane to get the distributor out of the engine. It came out in five pieces.

    I used to have a couple of trucks that used the M engines and they were great engines that really never gave any issues that weren't user imposed. I liked the 400M a little better, but I also think I'm swayed because that particular truck was just more fun for me.

    That foam stuff looks like the foam I had in my wife’s truck (it was found under the valve covers). Apparently it’s caused by the engine running frequently without reaching operating temperature. Which made sense in my cause as I soon find the motor had no thermostat in place.

      Most 400s share the 429/460 bellhousing,. Some 350Ms also share it, but most used the 302/351W bellhousing.Late 60s through late 70s, 400s, 360s, 390s, 427s, 428s, 429s, & 460s could be found with either the C6 or FMX transmissions. 289s, 302s, 351C, 351M & 351Ws could be found with C4 or C6 Automatics. Ford Automatics were classed by GVW, C4 maxed out at 9000 lbs GVW, C6 Maxed out to 17,500 lbs GVW, FMX could top out at 22000 lbs or more. FMX is a cast-iron boat anchor, weighs over 500 lbs, has zero performance parts. Usually found in F400 class chassis/school buses, occasionally in the large Sedans

    Hmm I bought a project 71 mustang off a relative and have started to work on it. Based off visual inspection I think it has one of these under the hood. Vin says it’s supposed to have a Cleveland but relative told me it’s on it’s second engine which is how he bought it. Is there a way to tell whether what I have is a 351m or 351c besides combing for a cast number?

    • @jsh6952
      @jsh6952 3 года назад +1

      it would either have a Cleveland or a Windsor, never a M series because of the extra weight or it would have had a 390/427/428 or a rare few with a 429 that year.

      IKR? Just pulled a friends last week.. Put it on the stand, and shot everything with Seafoam Deep Creep... Let it sit for a week... Tore it all down last week, and she came apart like butter. Warning to all; The intake manifold weighs like 600 lbs... Seriously, it's one of the heaviest intakes I've ever had the pleasure of pulling my back out with.

  • @stevepearson6316
    @stevepearson6316 Год назад

    I do belive that is a 351m 400cid engine....so its got 351cleavland heads , i think thay call it 2v heads because its for a 2bbl carb and also thay say its a stroked out 351cleavland so its not a big block and not a small block , but its talker than a cleavland by 1 inch so the intake manifold off a cleavland wont fit but the heads will , it didnt make a lot of hp i think it made 175 hp also the back of engine wher the trans bolts up to is a big block pattern ....thay say its not a desireable engine but , if you were to put heads built for a 4bbl and if you can find a better intake manifold, put a bigger cam in it you can get some good hp out of it atlest 300 hp and if you do all the right things you can get 500hp....so its a modified 351 stroked out , 1 inch longer stroke and it has the same bore as a 351 cleavland i think its 4inch bore

    I don't understand why you wouldn't just completely disassemble it and have the block hot tanked and sonic checked before putting any money into it. With weird crap like a nut in the pan and a socket left on a pan bolt, all that gunk in the water jacket........those are all red flags. Big ones. I'd tear it down to the block and not re-use ANY of the stuff you pulled off it or out of it. That thing needs a complete rebuild from the ground up and it's wise to do it RIGHT, especially since you're starting with a piece of JUNK.

      @@Oldsmob455 that is correct. The 351M was a de-stroked 400. Also sidenote, there is not such thing as a "400m", it's just the 351M/400 that were in the 335 family.

    • @jsh6952

      351M/400 are tall deck Cleveland engines. 351C and 351M share bore size and stroke, rods are longer and the pistons are taller in the M. The 400 shares the 4.000 bore of the C, but has longer rods, slightly taller pistons and .500 inch more stroke. All Ford 351 engines are actually 352 Cid and the 400 is a hair over 402. The 351s are shorted an inch ti differentiate them from the 352FE engine.
