To raise a reader, read to them.... a lot. Find good books like Henry and Mudge series and soon they will learn sight words and be reading these books happily. Both my kids read by age 4, one birth, one adopted and by 8 were lightyears ahead of kids who waited to read June B in school. The higher quality lit you read to them the faster they learn both English and other languages

The biggest thing is that they had to see you reading and talking about what you read!

Simple really. Don't have electronics in your home.
Instead of building a home entertainment room, build a library.

My daughter only read when she absolutely had to. I am an avid reader, so is my husband. We read to her from day one. Not just at bed time. We always have at least three bookcases full of books. She had one large one of her own. I was open minded in that I would buy her any book she showed interest in. We also frequented the fabulous library in my town. She would sometimes enjoy it, then put it down. As long as she was grade level what can you do? I didn't want her to hate it. My friends son had a hard time with it. When it was getting to be too much for her, I would take him for a day or two so we could work on the book report he had to finish. He hated it. I had to come up with some fun rewards for after. I played with a lot of Lego! Lol

The most important thing is that the kids want to read. 😂

"If you could read my mind love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
    Just like an old-time movie
About a ghost from a wishing well"

Doesn’t work 😭😭😭😭😭 I am an avid reader!! I literally have a library in my room. My kid tells me I read too much. He can’t stand books, at least reading for pleasure is a big no no no for him.

Pique their interest in the book in the first place by having it with custom label and cover design. Having it especially made for them much like *personalised childrens books* can have them be interested in the book you're giving and attempt to start reading it

FYI alot of video games require you to read, Pokemon is a perfect example of one such game

Reading is a tool to exchange information. The problem is that reading is taught for pleasure. You can't make a person enjoy something, especially when you see it as a waste of time. But if it was taught as a skill of self development, and self-protection it would have more legitimacy for the kids. Reading for pleasure seems like a waste of time, when there are so many options. Sure "The Book Was Better", but how long did it take you to read that book? If it's a "great book" they'll make a movie out of it and you'll get the idea in two hours. Reading should be focused attaining skill and information, to allow you to reach goals that you have in life, not escapist pleasure.

I'm pretty sure that's not something you can teach. Either they like to or don't.

By reading to them. Start with baby books from baby section at walmart or target....then hard baby books then on....not rocket science.

Don't let them see the other kids & what they're doing! Just saying/

@@richardbowers3647 well it's not about not letting them see other kids playing video games and such. It's about not letting them have the games or spend time playing them.

HOW TO LOVE CHILDREN. How can you love your children if you don't know the author of love Jesus. How can you love your children by raising them for the world and not preparing to say no to the devilish things of this world and say yes to the things of God. Do not let your children live like things that you have lived and live in this world. Deliver, present and teach them Christ Jesus. Like everyone likes. But love can only be learned from JESUS. You will only love your independent child when you are in Jesus Christ. He who has my commandments and keeps them is the one who loves me ... John 14:21 Educates the child in the way he should walk; and even when he grows old he will not deviate from it. Proverbs 22: 6
