Your analysis of the market situation is surly right, however, I think Honda hasn’t done anything wrong. The real issue is, that the world has turned crazy and we call a 110HP road bike “underpowered”. A motorcycle accelerating 0-60 in 3,5 seconds and having a top speed of 150 mph! People are told they need at least 140HP, if they don’t want to be treated as beginners, and the believe it. I had a CB1100XX back than (I ride bikes since over 30 years now) and I sold it after 1 year. Not because I have been scared or couldn’t handle it. I just discovered it’s an overkill. Way more than one would ever need on the road. I purchased a VFR. And it made me happy for 10 long years. What has changed since than? Just one thing: people understood the difference between “plenty” and “too much” a little bit better. If you need a steak, buy a steak, not a whole cow.

So true.I sold my VFR 750 and bought a blackbird cbr1100xx.It was great, but like you said,an overkill.I also found it top heavy, and from a handling point of view, doesn't come close to the VFR.Been looking at the ST1300,the VFR 1200.But I think I am going to find a clean VFR 800.I am 57,also been riding since a kid.The ST1100/or1300,to me is basically goldwing territory. The VFR 1200 is ok,but a bit pricy this side of the globe.Stay safe.Greetings from South Africa 🇿🇦.

Very well put. You can kill yourself on a 400 easily. Sometimes the choice of a bike is not about how fast it is or what tech it has. Sometimes less is more. Better get out of the competition mindset! Fantastic engineering all the VFR's, unique.

It's a street bike not a race bike its balanced perfect for road use it has plenty of power for the street honda engineers are very smart and everything they build is in a certain category. In my opinion 200 or 180 hp on public roads is too much power and can be dangerous. You can ride a bike with 100 hp or so harder and more aggressively than you can with a bike that has too much power safely once again I'm talking street legal not closed course racing. Honestly I have just as much fun riding smaller lighter bikes on the twisties or country I have a little cb250 that my aunt bought but never rode every once in a while I'll ride it just to let it run some and it's fun!!!

Kayvaan Shrike not that same thing. Not as reliable and it's a V2 that needs valve adjustment every 30k kms. For a daily commuter as myself, it doesn't work. On the other hand, it brings Bosch MSC and electronic controls. I weighed that when I end up buying a VFR, again. My 5th Gen VFR never failed me in 18 years

    I am a proud 2018 VFR owner.
I guess the problem is that the sport touring bikes are no longer the choice.
Adventure bikes are the new trend, and any GS1200 or Multistrada are more comfortable than a VFR.
Maybe my VFR will become a rarity in the future.

    • @m0rph3u1st

    • @andrean_7725
      @andrean_7725 4 года назад +4

Yeah, if you see a pretty new bike in Germany its either some adventure bike or some naked. Classic sportstouring is dead currently. I think there's no justification to invest money in a reengineering of the VFR to get it up to the Level of the Kawa. Propably much cheaper to take the CB1000 and put some fairings and get a better result

    • @m0rph3u1st
      @m0rph3u1st 4 года назад +3

andrean _ Sure. If Honda doesn't have VFRs available in Europe is natural that people looking to buy a new bike will follow what's available in the market. What I have seen is friends asking Honda for VFRs and they just say it's not available and they don't know when and if it will be. I thought it was because this year they would release a new model, but looking into the recent releases in Tokyo is all about the RRR and Africa Twin. VFR lays between both. My feeling is that people are missing a comfortable bike for the every day ride, with a sportster scent, but keeping it as a comfortable and not so gas guzzling as a real sport bike. Honestly, I think the 800f lacks a bit of power. For daily commute, usually under the 7k rpm consumption is fine. ABS and the Showa fork were an improvement compared with the earlier models. Also changing the radiators to the center made it better for traffic filtering. It only lacks a little power. 110hp and more torque would be nice to have. Improved electronics it would also be nice. Namely cornering ABS, like the Bosch MSC and a Sport mode taking out the clumsy VTEC. With a base electronic setting, I'm sure the Euro5 emissions could be tackled.

    • @leeengelsman6356
      @leeengelsman6356 4 года назад +1

Adventure bike have good sport ability, are generally more comfortable than sport touring bikes, are bit more capable on dirt roads but not suitable for serious off road use.
There urban commuter use is still good due to a high commanding view of the road, however they have a high seat and are hard to Mount/dismount.
I think people are attracted to them for the same reason that they have a preference for SUV it conveys an image of adventure and freedom from the hum drum rat race lifestyle
They are accessible by anyone rather than the narrow focus of racer style that where you can only watch your favoured racer compete on the track or dream of track days where very strong riding skill is crucial to success.
Having said that for most part it is image and fashion that drive adventure bike sales.
Most manufactures are no longer making sport touring bikes.
I still like and ride sport tourers.
People also see adventure bike as better value for money because the increased utility also most adventure bike have a large carry rack.

I have a 2014 VFR DLX, the awesome red color too. I bought it brand new, in crate, in 2016. Love the thing. Carve up turns just as good as anyone on anything else. In my 5 years of owning this bike I have noticed one thing: dudes notice bikes like the ninja 1000, chicks notice the VFR. The VFR just spills sophistication, no matter where it sits. Clean fairings, nice lines, and the paint pops in the sun. It may not have all the gadgets or all the power, but rollin slow gets the best results.

A local shop actually ordered a bunch of them from honda they had overstocked a couple years ago and had them listed at $5k. That's why I went from my '04 to a 2014 as a commuter.. Now I'm still left with the dilemma of keeping my '04 or making it like a track bike. Decisions...
Side note, my '04 was WAY more peppy than the '14 and seemed to handle cruising at higher speeds better as well as a higher top end and being more comfortable.

The that they developed the LFA's engine is remarkable. The crankshaft problem is from all the models when they started to implement the cross plane design, if I'm correct. However If I remember they revised their cross plane crankshafts, & improvised them on the latest models.

My first new street bike was a 1985 Honda 500 Interceptor. Followed by a 1987 Honda 700 Interceptor and then a 1988 Honda 750 Interceptor. All 3 VFR bikes were great with comfort, power, and handling. I fell into the idea I wanted a cruiser style bike comfortable for 2 people(just gotten married)but fun to drive with my buddies and went from one brand to another till a few years ago I picked up a 1998 Honda VFR 800. This bike was everything with comfort handling and power in one. The sound of that engine was heaven to me. The bike fits me well. While it is not a true sports bike it does what I ask of it. After watching the video "History of the VFR" I see I gotten the best or what others considered the best VFR. My buddies are amazed that for a old bike like my VFR I can keep up with them in corners and straights. The bottom line here is that if you have a good product and do not change over time your destine to be kick to the side.

  • @UrgetoRide

Excellent video as usual Hero. Having done a similar look through the VFR history and studying each model, the reason the latest VFR failed was simple, Honda had spent obscene amounts of money on the initial VFR models (SSA, Gear driven Cams, bullet proof V4 etc), and they simply had to breakeven. My guess is when they had done so, the VFR took the backseat to the benefit of other model.. innovation stopped and the 'cult' of the VFR came to a halt. Honda tried to correct trajectory with the 1200 but they simply overshot and brought something few wanted.. I just realised they have done the exact same thing they done with the new NSX. Everyone wanted the pure driving experience of the old one but more powerful, instead they brought this space age thing that was far too complicated and no one liked.
Once the 1200 wasn't the success they wanted they didnt want to plow loads of money on the R&D of the newest VFR800, so it became just a styling exercise... and to wry the towel dry, they derived the models into Crosstourers and Crossrunners.
I still do believe Honda will come back to its senses and bring back a worthy successor.

1200 was not success because it came out during the recession. It was an expensive bike and the only people willing to dish out $15 for a ST bike were elderly looking for a more comfy adventure-styles bike. 1200 is an awesome machine despite what the purist VFR guys say.

I now have 61K on the Ninja [Arizona...] and 3500 on the VFR. They are both comfortable, the ninja more by a bit of course but the VFR is still real nice. Yes the Ninja eats its lunch in the power department [Ivan's ECU flash etc] but there is a refinement about the VFR the Ninja doesnt have and a fit and finish that is hard to beat. It really is a beautiful bike i think because the focus was different for the VFR. I often hear it call the "Gentlemen's Express"

    Hi there, Hero!
You pretty much hit the nail in the head with your review. I think there is room for two VFR, a 750/800cc and a 1000/1200cc, as long as Honda manages to impart more technology and power to the bike while shedding some (a lot...) of weight. No VTec, please, and bring back the gear driven cams.
Smart suspensions, drive modes, cornering ABS, connectivity technology, cruise control, heated grips... If it was designed to compete against the BMW, those things were/are a must. Honda let the ball drop, for sure.

The one in this video is an updated 09+ VFR. Almost identical engine and frame.
The 1200 was not what the market wanted or could afford anymore in those years, so the 800 was brought back since the 800 had been loved.

600s Stopped selling like crazy after the financial crisis (-90% in the UK). They would need a big redesign to pass pollution regulations (gixxer 600 is dead too). The class became so competitive, they are just as expensive to build as 1000s already, so 1000s have all the cutting edge tech now and people intrested in buying such a bike get a 1000.
Google "death of 600 sportbikes" or something like that. There's many articles explaining it better.

The reason I chose Honda over others is just the sheer professionalism of execution, there’s something a little flimsy with lack of attention to detail about the other bikes esp Suzuki and Yamaha and even BMW at times
Never ridden a Kawasaki so can’t comment there
I’m currently considering replacing my 2008 VFR with a new one
I don’t know what the issue people have with VTEC - for me it’s a definite plus as the change in character and exhaust note is fantastic to experience and one grows to love it
No other bike has that which is a great USP for the VFR - why be a sheep like everyone else and give up such an awesome feature

I went from Honda CBR500R, to Honda CBR650F, to Suzuki GSX-S1000F recently. I know you would expect the Suzuki to be the most well equipped, but it really is a bargain for what you pay. The gearbox blows away both of the hondas, the horn button isn't in a ridiculous position, and the stock exhaust is actually good. Based on my experiences, I can't really say Honda wins on fit and finish/details. From what I've heard the traction control on even the new CBR650R isn't that good, but so far I really like the Suzuki's 3 stage traction control. Suzuki is a better value since Honda is priced comparatively high for the performance you get.. Though full disclosure, my Honda models were used and the Suzuki new (new old stock).

I have a 2001 VFR and I think it's the best all-around sport tourer ever built. I think these 2015s recapture a lot of what's great about the VFR, so it's a shame if it failed because of the Ninja. I wouldn't trade a few lbs or HP for overall feel and looks.

Huge fan of the VFR here!
Had a 2011 6th gen and now a 2018 rc93... the 8th gen its an improvement of the 6th. Better handling, better brakes, better fueling, less weight. 110hp its more then enough for a sport touring bike... never had a problem touring with pillion and lugage.
They are still selling in Europe, but maybe its the last year, with the euro5 emessions regulation...
Btw the only in us they sell a Standard and a dlx... rest of the world only gets de dlx
    Cheers ✌

V4 Rider Not anymore. Two friends tried to buy one in Portugal and they talked to the importer and the answer was that the bike is not available anywhere in Europe, despite is still showing at Honda's website. I bought mine last year and waited a whole month without knowing which color it would be. Got the gray one. Did the same changes you did: quickshifter and SC Project exhaust, but it still lacks engine comparing with the 5th Gen I rode for 18 years and with 137k km on it

Millenials know about the 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation VFRs and their gear driven cams, lack of garbage Vtec.
No, Millennials are craving a new VFR, make it 1000, NO fucking Vtec, bring back the Gear driven camshafts, set it up on some CBR style adjustable inverted forks and rear shock. Obviously fuel injection with easily adjustable fuel trims.
Keep the single sided swing arm, let it compete against the CBR, make it a V4 race bike NOT a touring bike, please !!!
Sport tour's dont even want the VFR RACERS DO, we all want a V4 made by Honda with gear driven cams, we want an endurance race bike Honda !!!!

LOVED my 94. I took it all over the midwest and up into Canada with absolutely zero issues. Just chain maint. Wish I would've kept it. It was stolen and they thrashed it. Super hard to find fairings for those bikes anymore. Even did a couple track days on it. My GS has a ton more power and tech but I miss the sound of those cams....
