    Absolutely the BEST advice, ever, Dave!!!!! Love this call. I grew up in poverty myself. Grew up with holes in my shoes, stained clothes, and free school lunch. My home was dysfunctional and abusive. My mom finally left and the finances got worse. I lived in a TENT when I was in highschool of all times. But you know what? My family had a lot of LOVE. Sometimes my mom would get all the presents at the dollar store so at least the tree was full of presents for us on Christmas. We played outside. My brothers and I had fun. Sometimes she would take us to "get lost" and she would just entertain us by driving us around to explore. Once we found a house that was made up to look like a castle ...think pink and purple and Disney Princess. I never forget that. Dave is right about CHARACTER. It has definitely made me who I am today and also inspired me to to better. I make well over six figures now. And I married a GOOD man. If I hadn't seen and lived through what I did, I would not be who I am today. Don't spoil your child. She will not be grateful. She will be entitled and expect life to hand her what she wants. She won't value hard work. I mean, I stated a "car washing club" with my friend when I was in 4th grade so I could have money to go to 7-11 and get slurpees and nachos. I learned the value of a dollar young, and that hard work pays off. I'm forever grateful for everything I worked for. Kids don't even remember the STUFF they had when they grow up. I can barely remember any of my toys. But I remember the silly games we played when the power went out.

    Dave and friends, I was a financial analyst for my state's government (Delaware) and I was a trainer. So many people in my classes told me they wished I could give their kids some of the basics. I got in touch with some local schools and offered to do things like "Friday, brown-bag lunch & learn" sessions for things like how to have a checkbook and balance it, how to save up for things, etc. I was told there was no room in the schedule because they had hired someone (paid, not free, as I was offering) for hip-hop lessons. there is no way a government school is going to teach the truth about money - if they did you'd have an uproar about social security. Basic math on what they STEAL out of your check every month tells you if you invested that same amount of money, you'd be a millionaire by the time you turn 40. When you retire and start collecting it, you're lucky to get a fraction back of what you paid in.

Emphasize the love of learning and the beauty of discovery. Be curious with your children! Then your children will journey through school (life) knowing that education is important...AND know they chart their own course, so to speak. Your children will get great grades. When it comes time to take college-entrance exams, your children will excel. What is the OUTCOME: scholarships and entrance into fabulous schools.

    My family of 7 was also “poor” and I put it in quotes because we never lacked any basic needs. My mom was a stay at home mom and my dad didn’t have a stable job but hussled and worked at everything and was always working. Yes we were told no and we didn’t vacation very year and go on a plane but I NEVER felt poor. My childhood was great from what I remember even though my mom tells me know that I’m an adult that people would tell her things and that she felt bad but I always tell her that we didn’t suffer. Also now that I have my own kids yes they have gotten in a plane already on a vacation but I plan on raising them humble and what I mean buy that is we don’t own a tv or a computer or laptop or tablet and they will not be receiving a newest iPhone for their first phone not because we can’t afford it but because we want them to earn what they want. We want to teach them you want the newest iPhone ok you’re going to work and save up and buy it yourself so you can feel it.

      They should have more access to technology and TV so they can learn there is so much more to the world and access to other cultures. They will need computer skills for any decent job in the future. You are hurting them more than helping them even though I know you think you aren’t. Sounds overly controlling and not connected to the real world. You need to teach them to be both book smart and street smart. Over sheltering them by denying tv computer phones they will isn’t helping. My kids are up-to-date on all the scams etc out there. They help me avoid scammers that text links and emails and calls. Street smart is worth it. All you need to do is keep a limit on their technology time and use parental controls. When I hear people say they don’t allow their kids these things I also notice they aren’t very comfortable with technology themselves so that is something to ponder.

    We had some lean years but thanks to our mother's frugality we always had a roof over our heads, food, clothes and medical and dental care. I do however remember a year or two when we were on food stamps after my stepfather died from suicide. It was humiliating to have to go use them in the stores and we got free school lunches as well. Our mother did not make good choices in men but we never felt unloved.

    Not having things that your mother could not afford is part of what made you the successful person you are. Why take that character-building mechanism away from your children? Wouldn't it be better to not be so focused on material things and instead be mature with your money and build a solid financial future for yourself and your children???

    • @mariee.5912
      @mariee.5912 4 года назад +1

      Well, not really. If you want to see poor go volunteer in a family homeless shelter, go to a soup kitchen, go to low income schools right in your neighborhood. I worked in a homeless shelter for a number of years, I have seen families without having on dollar for food. You don't need to go to third world country to see poor. I see homeless people sleeping on the streets every day including extreme weather. Cold/hot. How can't you ignore poverty in USA?

    • @aroncarvajal7080

      @@mariee.5912 I agree in part, but here in the states you have the option to go somewhere (a shelter) and the government is always willing to help, in a bunch of other countries he doesn't, this people that call are very very far from poor.

    The majority of the last one to two generations were spoiled, and it shows.
    Growing up, even though we were middle class somewhere, I rarely ever got what I wanted. Had to earn stuff. I remember many a 'high level negotiation' with one or other parent. And I was 'the saver', not much of a spender at all. Had always been that way, it was just a thing.
    But spoiled children generally grew up to be useless adults.
