140 year old here.
Back then the AWM (AWP) killed with one hit regardless of where it hit, there were no legshots. And shots went straight even if you did jumpshots. You could jump, shoot, switch to deagle and shoot before you landed. Pretty OP :>
The M4A1 Carbine was also called Maverick.
The AS_ (assassination) maps were for escaping as a 200 armor CT. Who was VIP for the round was random and he could only have a pistol.
There were also ES_ (escape) maps which was basicly the same but for terrorists.
Scrims were also played on CS_maps such as italy, assault, militia and backalley. Nothing weird about it, but then DE_ took over.
Dedicated servers were rare and most scrims took place on player PC hosted servers.
Other pretty early maps were 5star, mansion and 747

Ah, 747. I remember playing that and Mansion on source back in like 2013 on some custom servers. Man, i fuckin' miss source days so much. 1.6 was fun, but source was like prime time of the internet days growing up.
I played 1.6 from 2008 to 2013 and it was my best childhood moments, i love this game.

Same 2008-2012/13. I was 2nd grade 2008. Me and my classmates were pretending to be playing cs in real life in the classroom.
Factually, CS also started on the Quake engine, so it would make it originally a Quake mod, however the devs decided to go for GoldSrc instead after Half Life launched.
Called Action Quake.
using the same engine doesnt make it a mod. also half life launched before. goldsrc came way later with 1.6 i think when it moved to steam and hl2 released.

VIP gamemode is actually a playable gamemode in TF2 Classic (recent mod for TF2), you are supposed to protect the VIP, because only he's able to capture points. It's like advanced babysitting.
this VIP mode sounds easily griefable
@@c0rvus Either the VIP gets randomly selected, or you can vote for someone to be it. If the dude griefs, you can just kick him.

Counter strike 1.6 had VIP aswell but it was only 1 map

The ambient sounds are so much nostalgia i remember playing Half Life on my Dad's PC when I was very young, I didn't know what I was doing but the sounds are burned into my brain since then

Man, de_Aztec ambient sound is *P E R F E C T I O N*
We used to play CS 1.0 release on the breakroom LAN back in 2002 or so. One of the interesting aspects of de_aztec was that it had lightning that would strike the ground around B bomb site and could hurt you.
It's amazing to see a map that we played in 1999 slowly upgraded and it's still the same map that were playing here now in 2022. It's Tuscan, that last map that was being shown. We are still playing Maps from over 20 years ago. That's just how amazing this game actually is and sturdy
This gamemode will even be played in 100 years just with better graphics.
Though modern graphics are already too realistic for my taste, one big advantage of the old cs was how easy to spot enemies were.

2:10 Speaking of Minh Le, he also made Tactical Intervention which was an amazing game that I believe people still play although you have to do a few things to get it working. And I think he's possibly working on a new game now. But yeah, he's awesome.
He also used to work on Rust by Facepunch.
Sadly tactical intervention was removed from steam and shut down 😭
@@PUNCAKEEEE I know, but if you still have it you can actually still play it with a few tricks. Even Minh tells people to do it, and I think he plays from time to time as well.
Oh man tactical intervention was so good, you initially had to get used to it because was somehow weird, but then the fun was 100%

CSS was really fun for surfing, poolday maps and mods like Mines of Moria vs Xenomorph
The only reason i played CSGO was because you can just hop in and find a match. in CS 1.6 there are still matches but it takes more time or planning.
to this day i play at least once a week some 1.6 for fun on old community servers that have been around since then, its insane when you join a server and someone greets you with your name, 18 years later.
FUN fact : Cpl was a circuit that used to run tournaments back in the day. Many maps such as Tuscan & Mirage came after they started using those maps
Also cpl_mill is also the map the infamous 'DOOR STUCK!' video took place

The brush being used here has four sides. When it is being rendered at triangles, the renderer tries to figure out the proper way to crease it. In this case it cannot decide and is warping.

I find it funny that the 1999 menu sound is the same sound as taking a screenshot on the Steam Client today, 23 years later. They really used the same sound for 23 years 😅
Trivia: Nowadays Minh Le is working at Pearl Abyss developing an Exoskeleton-themed Shooter (FPS) powered by the proprietary next-generation engine called the "Black Space Engine". The name is "Plan 8".

You bring back some memories... I remember how i play this when he came out, since 2002 at internet caffes in my town. We gather more boys, different ages, and we play lan in net cafe. Back in the days not everybody could afford a computer..at least in my country and don t was this hype on pc components that is today. 2001-2007 no one was talking about pc components/peripheral: video cards, motherboards, ram memories, mouses, keyboards, headsets, monitor(hz)...we just enjoy the game
Fun fact the first scoped m4 model is still used in cs 1.6 when you drop the m4 to the ground

I have literally started playing since version 1.0 at a first ever LAN cafe in the winter of 2000, it was such a good night! Good memories!

I had so much more fun with 5.2 than any other version. Once it hit 1.0, I still enjoyed it and it became more credible - but this was my favourite game and it was a free mod built by a community. That’s got a lot to do with what the purists remember. 👍🏼

Played this when I was a kid even if I'm alone or playing with others it doesn't get tiring for me, maybe because of the maps and different gamemodes.

Client 1.5 and 1.6 was different from the 1.6 that came with steam. with the implementation of steam, granted us with the galil and the famas. and not to forget, Condition zero was also a thing before source ;).

BETA wasn't a "better product" but having played since Beta 4, I have to say the Beta 7 to 1.5 versions provided me with the most fun. It was still new, the community was constantly changing, and very few people were pretending to be professional gamers so playing the game really was PLAYING A GAME.
1.5 was just incredible, tons of fun!
Blast from the past. I started cs on beta 7. Also bought the retail version which I still have on my shelf. It has some differences to mod, missing maps and the guns had different names. 1.5 was the best time for me. 1.6 was good and source was brilliant. I still remember when the WON servers shut down and we moved to steam, I remember thinking it will never take off! I hated CSGO and the direction they took CS in general.

thats the countrestrike i remember :D - i played at a friends place and we spent new years eve just playing, eating and shooting fireworks, while his whole family was gone. i played till early in the morning and almost fell asleep on the keyboard. such good times :D - maybe it was goofy but it was so much fun already.

Wrong, beacause CS before was Half Life 1 mod, so counter strike has used it's Half Life 1 assets, and de_nuke use all the surface tention texture.

I played this in 1999, still playing cs2 today. I miss the good old days. LAN party’s in my garage in high school.
I can see that the old gamemods where made by someone from barking dog, the weapons, the gamemods, the maps, the everything is in Global Operation style.
I think if they brought ammo back it would ruin a lot of noobs. but, the dedicated players would have way more fun. you used to have to know the shot wasnt gunna miss or youd be stranded with a knife. vs shield.
I've been playing the older Counter Strike games a ton recently, mainly Condition Zero Deleted Scenes and Source, but the others as well. So much more fun than CSGO in my opinion.

it Would be nice that you used the REAL OFFICIAL VERSIONS of 1.1 / 1.3 / 1.5 / 1.6. These ones that you showed are all modified from the official versions. The front image background its not the same.

Protect the VIP on Oilrig was some of the best map gameplay ever. Hands down. OMG YOU PLAYED IT. YOU SPAWNED ON THE BOTTOM! And had to get into the helicopter. Shit was amazing.
I mean you can still go even further beyond 1999, Minh Le's first attempt at a SWAT tactical fps game was a quake mod called "Navy Seals" which came out in 1997
