This experiment is being done right now in England. How is it going?

Lol we all know the answer to that. Of course, Garrett Jones didn’t say that immigration is always a good thing, but that the culture of those immigrating is a massive factor in determine how positive or negative the result is.
Masses of primarily sharia-supporting Arabs from the war-torn Middle East haven’t jived at all with Christian-value-influenced Western nations. That much is obvious. Western meddling in foreign countries (thank you US, UK, Israel, etc.) is greatly exacerbating the situation. It’s an endless cycle of economic and cultural degradation for the masses and enrichment for the crony politicians.

In Boston, lots of Chinese here. But they all speak Mandarin and stick together in their own packs, not a lot of integration, from my point of view.

Same experience in Southern California. Except I will say that is confined to the first generation. The second generation won’t even speak mandarin once they start attending grade school. I can’t say that about Hispanics. They all speak Spanish all the time, and tend to hang out with other Hispanics.

So there is Adam Smith Wealth of Nations and there is The Culture Teansplant by Garrett Jones. Immigrants bring there culture with them and human being are not as malleable as social engineers would like them to be.

China has definitely improved in certain areas of their economy, but their lack of innovation is directly related to their quality of institutions and amount of government funding used, which of course, influences quality and quantity. I think China leads in Tech piracy The difficulty with this experiment would be how wildly different the results could be based on government intervention.
I appreciate this discussion and it is a good perspective to have

Of all the problems you could come up with, “tech piracy” has gotta be one of the most benign and inoffensive to wealth creation and improving living standards.

    • @Pau11Wa11

@TheFeatInk Yeah, that’s essentially the most harmless example one could bring up. And, it’s ultimately a symptom of the shear prevalence of state-ownership in Chinese businesses. By conventional measures, China has 391,000 state-owned enterprises (SOEs), but new analysis of state ownership among all 40 million registered firms in China finds that 363,000 firms are 100% state-owned, 629,000 firms are 30% state-owned, and nearly 867,000 firms have at least some state ownership. That’s insane.

The Chinese have monopolised the coffee business in Thailand and Australia, and trust me, you don't want coffee made by a Chinese. It's a bit too 'entrepreneurial'.

Innovation is not part of China’s current socialism/communism culture. Besides, an individual’s innovation potential depends on the early-age education received not on his/her national identity/background.

It’s really hard for me to show Christian love knowing that laws are being broken.
As God is my witness, it doesn’t matter what time of the day/what grocery store I go to, I always see new faces that look much like the people south of the border.
I don’t hate them for wanting a better life, but I’d be lying if I say I’m not worried about the future impact of this on my children and children’s children.
If I’m being honest: I haven’t felt safe or economically ok since the “big guy” took office.
    Notice I said “took”!

If your ability to show Christian love is impeded by the knowledge that laws are being broken, you need to care less about laws. They are an idol.

@crazycatman5928 As a fellow Christian myself, I second what @FreeBroccoli said. I assume you know that legality doesn’t reflect morality. Besides, these people immigrating, like us, are ultimately responding to incentives implemented from the top down. Essentially, we’re all victims of the government. Migrants included. None of what I’ve said above implies that I support open borders and unlimited immigration, nor am I knocking the notion that it likely increases the presence of violent criminals. My point is merely that we as Christians should recognize that every normal person, regardless of status as legal resident or illegal migrant, are ultimately doing the best we can with what we’ve got to work with. There will never be political solutions to the problems we face since politics typically results in endless centralization. Regardless of circumstance, we should love people like Jesus calls us to. Our treasures aren’t earthly, but heavenly. Everything else will be sorted out by Him. I’m not a fan of trump, or any politician for that matter, but “took” was the right word to use. God bless you, stranger.

Lets ignore the massive elefant, and talk about "culture" and lets pretend the open border experiment doesnt exist. Also the weird idea that the icelandic people can be screwed over.
