So after a couple of weeks of watching dirt and iron, i got MOTOvated and I bought a 2005 WR450F off of Gumtree (our craigslist), i have started pulling it down, and I used this video when pulling the carby out today! I have bought the JD jetting kit and will make sure i do all of the free mods from the other videos. Keep up the great work Rado!
cool Dave, you are going to like the power now! Make sure you are not lean, i used one needle and bike ran fine, but I felt its not 100% so then I switched to rich needle and it felt amazing.. its usually spot on, but some small fine-tuning can make it even better sometimes
7:10 When you get ready to cut your bolt, (if you haven't bought the shorter yz bolt), put a nut on the bolt spun all the way down before cutting the bolt. When you get the bolt cut, backing of the nut or removing it from the bolt will assure that the threads at the end of the bolt are somewhat cleaned, then you can use a fine file, to knock the resulting chip or burr off of the bolt. Otherwise, when done cutting the bolt, you can sometimes just flat-file perpendicular to the bolt and get the starting thread about right, clean.
I like your videos man, good tips for beginners. I can't speak for other countries but I've bought 3 new WR450Fs over the years in Australia (03, 06 and 2011 models) all from different dealers and handily the grey wire throttle stop and airbox restrictions were removed by the dealer. All I've had to do with them was add a JD kit to the carb and an aftermarket exhaust system. I also put a YZF exhaust cam in the 2011 model. That bike in particular is a beast.
@@dirtniron I've just bever had any problems with them, I do frequent oil changes which makes a big difference of course. I put a new top end and cam chain in my 06 a couple of days ago and it was the stock piston and rings I replaced that had done 32,000km. Most of my mates ride and they have had various KTM, Husqvarna, Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Gas Gas enduro and MX models over years and they never lasted as long as the WRs did, especially the Honda CRFs. I just haven't had any reason to change, when the WRs wear out or I sell them I don't know what I'll get, the 250 and 300cc euro enduros KTM and Husqvarna make are very nice to ride.
One can check for full opening of the throttle slide buy putting your finger in the intake after removal of the air box rubber boot. When the throttle is opened all the way you shouldn't be able to feel the slide in the throttle bore.
Hello buddy, Do you know for what the wires are which are next to the carburator? I think they come from factory unplugged, and you have them unplugged too.. At 3:19 you are moving them to the side... Thanks in advance and greetings from serbia and switzerland :-)
I would love to do this modification to my wr450, but I don't have the patience and if things don't go as planned I start breaking and throwing stuff. Maybe if I was getting paid like you I would have patience but no looks to delicate of a job and little screws can get lost quick, but thanks for the video. Keep'm coming, love riding though.
I've just picked up an 02 wr250 runs and rides great but does cut out under full throttle, is it possible it has the throttle mod and not the grey wire mod? I haven't looked into it yet
Great video, thank you. On a separate but related matter, have you encountered any TPS issues? My 2011 WR450F has been stuttering at higher speeds when applying a stead throttle. There are no issues going through the ranges, just when attempting to hold a steady speed. In my research I see that this is somewhat common with WRs. Some guys suggest it is a carb port or adjustment issues, some say unplug and run without the TPS connected, and others suggest replace and recalibrate the TPS. Do you have an opinion on this?
@@michaelsilva2310 as it turns out...carb jetting was the issue. i'm at 5,500 feet and so once i installed the JD jetting kit with the elevation appropriate main jet and needle position, all is well.
The video is very good. I bought a wr f 450 f 2005 last week and I'm having problems with it. It has pieces that are not original. the hoses in the rear reservoir where the radiator fluid is released, can you make a video showing where they fit?
So I'm starting with the free mods on my 2019 WR450f, air box bong removal, throttle full range and remove air restrictor insert from oem exhaust . Question I have...will this change cause the engine to run too lean? Too much air and not enough fuel? Next question I have...without having an aftermarket exhaust is there an advantage to get the gytr competition ecu? Looking to have performance but dont want to see fuel usage go crazy. Thanks btw...great vids
I am not sure about the lean bike after the free mods but it’s possible. I highly recommend to get gytr ecu, the bike will run way better and will have correct fuel-air ratio as well.
@Dirt N Iron I have this same carb that I've re-jetted to fit my Suzuki DRZ 400 SM. Do you know if the fuel inlet elbow will come out easy to where I can point it towards my fuel petcock for a more direct route on my bike and the fuel line routing?
Am looking at the moment for a wr250 or wr450 but honestly once the bike is brought it's not gonna leave me much cash left...so my question is can i uncork it without having to remap it? I can't afford the difference ECU...so what can I do that's free and will free up some power without going down the remapping route? Thanks any info really grateful

I'm 15 and around 5 11'. I have a ton of downhill mountain bike experience so I was just wondering where I can get a cheap bike that would suit me. preferably less than £1000.
If you want something road legal for enduro riding your tall enough for anything out there, your weight, fitness and experience will make the choice. Just speaking for Yamaha models the more sedate road trail/enduros are the TT-R 250 and WR250R. Both of these are lower maintenance very reoiable bikes, make good power and would be easy to learn on and live with. With a 1000 pound budget I don't know if you'd get a WR250R for that but I'd say there would be lots of decent TT-R250s around for that price. Then you have the more powerful agressive WR250F and WR450F, these will probably be more expensive again and the 450 in particular is probably too powerful for a beginner. I'd be looking for a Yamaha TT-R250 or another excellent equivalent would be a Honda XR250R.
Just a suggestion, when you remove the carb, you disconnected electrical plug from it,don't connect it back, just tape it up with some electrical tape, apparently its a common mod also
yea, I heard about those mods, so far my TPS is not giving me any troubles so I will keep it connected. For the top hoses of carburetor, my understanding is that by doing that you can get into mud and river crossings without sucking all the dirt in, is there any other benefit?
Dirt N Iron yes, that’s what i think this is for,I just got this bike last week,it’s kinda a basketcase,so Im doing a lot of research while fixing all the issues with it,so all that info is pretty fresh to me
Silvester, my understanding is that once you open the throttle fully you are entering high rmp and WR ignition does not have proper timing for such high rpm. Engine is not working optimally, of course it would still run, but it is much better for engine to have ignition curve that was designed for high rmp as well. I read somewhere that till 6000rpm there is not much difference so if you stay mostly in that range you should be fine. here is what Yamaha says about it: The CDI unit is the same for both YZ and WR models. The gray wire matches the ignition map to the WR and its shorter throttle stop to limit RPMs. This is done solely to allow the WR to meet drive-by sound restrictions. By swapping to the YZ throttle stop and disconnecting the gray wire, the WR can now access the YZ ignition maps that allow ignition timing that matches the wider throttle openings. There is no lower rev limiter, per se, in the WR CDI. The limitation comes from the stock WR not being able to have its throttle opened completely. Disconnecting the gray wire simply allows the CDI to use the YZ ignition curves that provide high RPM timing advance not available with the WR's stock setup. Besides meeting the noise restrictions, the thinking is that the WR being a trail bike, most riders won't miss that high RPM capability. And those that do, well, it's there if you want it.
most of WR have the same mods, new AF models have grey wire connector in different location and are little harder to work on carburetor, but the mods are pretty much the same, 2003 and 2004 came without AIS, for other years you can use GYTR removal kit.
there is a throttle stop n your throttle body, I have 2019 WR450 video showing that.. i mention it here and you can find another videos with the detailed explanation ruclips.net/video/ZOZ6IARNMec/видео.html

Junior Lara I think you should get a 250. We all could be using smaller displacement bikes but depending what you’re riding, if you’re doing Enduro offroad stuff, 250 would be perfect. No overheating, if you fall, it’s not 250lbs. If you’re doing desert roads and whoops at 40mph, 450. But if you’re doing technical, 250. - cost - If money isn’t a problem, then get a 450. A 4 stroke has tons of moving parts in the top end and can get really expensive, especially with a SOHC (single overhead cam). Parts for a 450 are generally more expensive than a 250. If money is really tight and you don’t want to spend $2000 on a rebuild maintenance interval on a 250/450, I suggest 2 stroke bikes. In the end you didn’t ask for my opinion lol, but when choosing a bike, it’s not an ego thing. Here’s a question for you. Are you riding a 250 cc 4 stroke to its full potential? The best way to find out is to check if the slide in the carburetor comes all the way up, another way is to rev the engine and see if you hit limiter. If not reaching limiter, you know you have long throttle stop.
Hmmm okay that’s great advice ‘ I don’t recall ever hitting the rev limiter “ now that you mentioned it ‘ great advice I’ll try it sometime tomorrow. Thanks so much Rado 😎
yes they will, grey wire is located in slightly different place, otherwise pretty much the same. One downside of AF is that you have to remove rear shock in order to remove the carburetor.

its little different since 2020 is EFI. i suggest to ask dealer to do it for you, its very common thing to do.. good dealer should be able to help you out.
@@dirtniron Awesome. I will just need the dealer to get and install the GYTR Competition kit before I make the trip to the dealer. Only the kit is sold out everywhere. I understand the kit is $150 and hopefully, the dealer won't charge too much for the installation. This would take care of the throttle stop mod and the GYTR kit mod since the kit comes with the shorter screw. This would only leave the air box choker mod and exhaust mod left. I feel confident enough to do the air box mod myself but, I still need to do some more research about the exhaust mod.

Those engines can handle it, they were made for it.
another good and useful video.
thanks ;)
Will all the mods that you are doing to your bike work on the aluminum frame models too? like a 2007/2008 model
yes they will, grey wire is located in slightly different place, otherwise pretty much the same. One downside of AF is that you have to remove rear shock in order to remove the carburetor.
Good job
thanks mate ;)
Hold up wait a minute ima have to take a look at this now 😮 any other mods I should do to it to make it fast but still reliable
all the free mods plus an exhaust maybe and JD jetting kit for carb, check my wr450 playlist . everything is there
Why not just completly remove it and silicone the hole???
you need the stop, I dont think its good idea to run without it
what is a turtle stop ?
Shawn Keene :) I still struggle with some words, my little boy corrects me too. I will work on it, promise
I m kidding ! lol
Where are you from anyways?
Just wondering.
Thanks for the help with my JD jetting kit I bought. Good video
no problem Shawn! from Slovakia originally.
Hello, I'm a follower of your channel, buy a WR450 F year 2005 and I'd like it if you can only add the subtitles in Spanish please. I would really appreciate it . Thanks and greetings from Chile
Are you sure this is safe? Yamaha does not recommend removing the throttle stop.
yes its safe
@@dirtniron Thank you very much. Do you know if the throttle stop removed exactly the same way on a 2020 WR450F?
its little different since 2020 is EFI. i suggest to ask dealer to do it for you, its very common thing to do.. good dealer should be able to help you out.
Damn they don't make the throttle easy to get to do they 😅
nice
Midroll Ads
No one lets them run, they drive
traffic away, lower retention scores.
I let opening and closing ads run, and
end any vid that has midrolls.
