They never understood. It was so difficult for them to accept him and trust his words. My god, this blindness. He knew that they will reject him. He knew.
They might not have known THAT, but they definitely knew that He was the Messiah. They chose to remain willfully ignorant because He did not give them the respect that THEY THOUGHT they deserved. The Pharisees had no excuse for dismissing Him the way they did. It still baffles me how idiotic they were.

I don’t understand the context of this scene. The Pharisees thought they were doing everything right. Reading every word. Following every letter. Which is why they didn’t see Him for who He was. They were expecting something else.
Anglican here (Episcopal for our US brothers). From Matt.15:17-20, Jesus talks about what defiles the body. Food, even unclean food goes in the mouth to the stomach then out into the sewer. Jesus contends this does not make a person unclean. But evil intentions come out the mouth from the heart (we understand from the mind these days). This is what defiles a person. So, giving alms is to do good. Giving alms, that is time, talent or treasure for good, that is justice and mercy, means your actions are done with a good heart and mind, and therefore you are clean in the eyes of God.
This is how Jesus comes against self-righteous interpretation of the truth, that is what the Pharisees did before they sought for justice and mercy. Any self-righteous interpretation of the truth can be harmful.
My best guest is it’s a twist on the passage in Matt 15:18. The video is about the passage in Matt 23:23. Jesus condemns the religious leaders for their warped superficial view/interpretation of the law.
