Uncle Vanya, a Russian intellectual barely making ends meet in these backwoods, falls in love with a woman who happens to be on his estate ...
While making the film, the director set out to preserve the style and content of the original theatre piece as much as possible.
The film is recognised as one of the most successful adaptations of Chekhov's plays.

It's a pure esthetic joy to watch this movie: many sets are like paintings, like works of art. Perhaps the set decorator intentionally wanted to achieve this effect and let me say he has succeeded! It's so accurate and so correctly depicts the stifling, sluggish atmosphere of dacha life, of small provincial southern towns. There are several foreign productions of Uncle Vanya, but as beautiful as one can find them, there is unfortunately nothing Russian in them - they failed at portraying the way Russians talk, gesticulate, react, eat and even dress...

The Cannes Film Festival 2021 awarded a Japanese film,"Drive My Car" for the best screen writing. The film was based on the novel by Haruki Murakami. The film contains much reference to Uncle Vanya. That's why I wanted to watch it to comprehend the other film's plot. Thanks for the movie.
:"Drive My Car" is overrated and should not have gotten its Best Picture nomination BUT----the best things about it were the scenes where the actors played scenes from "Uncle Vanya." So while we disagree about THAT movie, we can both agree that the movie made us want to see Chekhov's "Uncle Vanya."

Murakami loves Tchekov. Many of his works contains a citation or reference to him.

They can't face the sensuous reality of life. They don't know why they can't face it. So, they empty their lives in empty abstractions. Time becomes mere quantity, empty of content. Life has stopped. Everyday life for so many. Why not turn that death culture upside-down?
The cinematography and sets in the movie are beyond superb. If you pause the film, most of the images appear to be paintings. The acting is great. The direction is so well done.
Chekhov has to be seen in Russian - it sounds completely different because the Russian culture is very different - unique in its own way..
I can speak a little Russian - but I understood most of this play. It is nicely depressive - like only Russians can understand and appreciate.
I saw the British production with Toby Jones and Richard Armitage - it seemed like a different play.

True! I watched several Uncle Vanya productions - English and American, and none of them felt Russian to me. Neither the actors, nor the atmosphere, or the music, the manners, the gesticulations. The spirit of Chekhov's Russia was missing. It's the the best to watch in the language of the original. Luckily, the subtitles help understand. There is another great film, BTW, which is based on several Chekhov's stories" The unfinished piece for a mechanical piano"!
@@elladapetrosyan9610 Chekhov is notoriously difficult to translate. He's hard enough to do in his native tongue. Even Stanislavski premiered The Seagull as a tragicomedy, which it obviously is, although Chekhov somehow thought it was a comedy...? So while Chekhov was still alive there were disagreements in Russia about how to produce one of his plays!
However, just because it's hard to translate doesn't mean it's impossible. Over the 120 years since Chekhov died, numerous successful translations have been completed. You just have to know which ones are regarded as the best, is all.

Another superb production from Mosfilm, excellent performances by all. The absence of background music is such a relief from the usual bombast, I enjoyed the slip from sepia to colour, they caught the atmosphere of the suffocating stillness of isolated rural Russia and the decaying manor. Uncle Vanya is a wonderful story, we all know someone like the professor. Marvellous! Thank you very much for posting, these Russian classics are a real joy to watch.

Очень бедный перевод, к сожалению. Речь героев отражает их душевное состояние в полной мере, а в субтитрах совсем этого незаметно. Смоктуновский, Бондарчук и Купченко прекрасно играют.
It's interesting to watch the play in Russian and note the differences in mannerisms and peculiarities of behaviour of actual Russians on display here, which of course foreigners like myself will have no way of picking up on otherwise.

Why is it that the movies of the Soviet time are so good and the ones after capitalism took over are not even interesting? I mean post Soviet movies for me are trying to be like Hollywood and Soviet time movies have their own language.
I guess because cinema business in USSR was not about profit but more about art and creativity (within some ideological restraints, of course). The actors were all professionals (who got high education and it was as hard to get there as to ballet school). And they were theatrical actors as well (not just actors in cinema).

Я родился в СССР и конечно посмотрел более тысячи фильмов. Как и в любой стране мы производим много мусора для потребителя, но это нормально, потому что без этого не бывает и шедевров. Я не обесцениваю советские и российские фильмы нового периода. Даже считаю, что на западе недооценивают русское и советское кино. Этому народу удается вопреки всему создавать глубокое искусство во всех жанрах - музыка, литература, кино, балет, живопись, театр. Предполагаю, что Вы не знакомы с современным русским кино, авторским и артхаусом. К сожалению, без знания языка и погружения в культурный код теряется понимание важных нюансов даже в универсальных произведениях.
There's plenty of good post soviet directors, like Bykov and Zvyagintsev. In general there's always quality filmmaking in the independent scene.

Horrible tranlation. Google translator translation. Half of the beauty of Checkov's text is lost in this horrible translation. It gives the general idea of what is going on when they talk, but it misses completely what exactly they are saying and HOW they are saying what they say.

I saw an English version with David Warner, Ian Holme. It was beautiful. Also sad but much more full. I can’t say which one Chekhov would prefer. There were many words taken out of this version and much feeling.
English version never had the best actor in XX century - Smoktunovsky.
I watched the English version and though it was beautiful I didn't feel the spirit of Chekhov, neither it felt like it was Russian or about Russia.

Horrible translation
A depressing story in true Russian fashion. I do find it funny how Sonya is supposed to be a relatively unattractive woman in the script, yet they cast the most gorgeous actress they could find to play the role.

I am very familiar with this play. I have read it line by line and studied it with the help of a book by Styan. I have several translations and several DVDs. This rendition is very disappointing. The actors are fine, but it is the redacted and missing lines that are the problem. Furthermore, timing is very important to several lines that are meant to be comical... but here the scenes, lines, and camerawork are such that the comedy is entirely missing. Finally, the title of the play is "Uncle Vanya," and yet the lines, especially in Scene 1 that are meant to characterize Uncle Vanya are missing, and you never understand his background or motivations for what he does or his opinions about the other characters. There are songs that are not in the original, and while Waffles is meant to play, instead here the doctor plays. I don't understand why the screenwriter here thinks he/she knows better than Chekov. If you really want to know the play, please look elsewhere.
