In a very poetic way that knife Ellie carries around separated her from her mother but she never goes anywhere without it so it’s like they are always together
I think the ending reflects a whole lot on how we're influenced by our past when making choices about the future. Ellie is tormented by the deaths of all the people she believes she could've saved as does Joel. Someone else in that same situation haunted by a set of different events might've made different choices. A simpler choice would've been to let Ellie live her life long enough before operating on her. Maybe she can pass on that immunity to her children. In which case all you'd need is her placenta to obtain the cells that would otherwise be in her brain. A rational way forward would require a rational world to prevail but alas this is not that world.
This was an emotional episode seeing the opening with Ashley Johnson's Anna opening the episode gave me chills. It's the passing of the torch from the OG Ellie to the actress who is playing Ellie in the show. Ashley in those 5 to maybe 10 minutes powerful performance and knocked it out of the park. Also, for me here's what sets this show apart from similar shows: restraint. It's eerie, intelligent, carefully paced and most importantly it only rarely shows you the infected. This means that when an infected DOES appear, it's impactful AF.
I like how you can clearly hear Ellie through her grunts and noises 😅 also felt the moment she held baby Ellie felt like sort of passing the torch moment
Fun Fact: Aside from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey makes a cameo as one of the nurses (who actually voiced that same nurse from the game) within this episode as well!
"Time heals all wounds, I guess." "It wasn't time that did it." It's hard to match "baby girl", but they actually did it. The expressions on Joel and Ellie's faces say everything. Especially Ellie. The poor orphan girl who, by her own words, had everyone she ever cared about die or leave her, knows without question that she has a father who will NEVER leave her.

If they follow the story of The Last of Us 2 then I just won't watch. There is a way to tell a story about the cycle of violence, and a way to make what was once an enemy seem sympathetic. But Naughty Dog did not do that.

What I like about the story of part one is its unique take on humanity and its purpose within us as humans. It’s sort of a trope to have one person sacrificed to save the many. But this game subverted that expectation for me. Usually zombie apocalypse games/movies have a level of expectation that you have to make the “tough call” and let people die. Usually for your own survival or for all remaining humans to be saved. But movies like “Train to Bushan” and this game, broadened my thinking of the genre. Because of Joel’s actions, I realized… The fate of humanity shouldn’t rest on the shoulders of a single little girl. Like some miracle cure is going to help save the world from its problems. It’s not her responsibility. It’s everyone’s. Ellie dying won’t save humanity. People have to save their own humanity. A cure won’t give anyone that. People would still fight. People would still abuse power. Joel gave her a chance at life itself. To enjoy being alive. To find love, to have friends, to be her own person. Ellie, this character we’ve grown attached to, is worth more alive than dead. She means more to Joel than the world would ever care about her or her death. Even if her cure did save the people that were left, she’d be forgotten. This girl that thought she wouldn’t matter to anyone - because everyone she’d ever loved had either died or left - through Joel, got the chance to live and feel important. So in the end, to my own surprise, I think Joel was justified. Not because he took a choice away from her, but because it shouldn’t have been a choice a kid should have to make in the first place. BTW: thinking about it, those doctors didn’t even wake Ellie up and ask her for her consent. As far as Ellie knew, they would draw some blood and run tests. She might have guessed death could be possible, but the surgeons didn’t bother waking her up. I can only think that is because they knew they were going to go through with the surgery whether she said yes or no. So they kept her sedated and asked Marlene’s permission. Abby’s dad can fuck it. Sorry for the strong language but, man, he doesn’t get to decide for her.
Micky cheesing and trying not to laugh at @3:36 when Marketa said she would be pissed if there was a cliffhanger in the end was absolutely priceless. Also Suraj looking at the camera like "Welp...you'll find out soon enough."
To answer your question about if the cure would have done anything it’s simple and straight forward, “You’re not immune from being ripped apart” - Tess
I loved how all of the callbacks like Chef Boyardee and the five mile hike that Joel makes is his way of showing how much he cares for Ellie. It harkens back to Frank saying paying attention to things is how we show love. He was paying attention to Ellie the entire time because he instantly felt those fatherly instincts when he was first hired to protect her. He just buried it until he couldn’t anymore. The scene where he shows his vulnerability and openly talks about his suicide attempt was so heartwarming. He shows so much vulnerability that he wouldn’t originally show because that’s how much he cares about Ellie. It’s heavily implied that he contemplated suicide in the game, but verbalizing it in the show only to end with the “it wasn’t time that did it” was a good choice. And Ellie responding with “well I’m glad that didn’t work out” was perfect. That’s the closest they will ever get to saying “I love you”. Love how much goes without saying in their relationship. It’s that subtle dance between tease and payoff that really makes us chomp at the bit for every single interaction, clinging to every second. Fun fact: before the game came out 50% of the play testers without children hated the ending and wanted it changed, and all of the testers with kids understood Joel and loved the ending. Happy Naughty Dog stuck to their guns and didn’t go for the safer, more feel good ending. People still discuss this ending and how it made us feel to this day.
It’s shitty Joel lies to her but I’m so happy that the lie he says about raiders attacking the hospital is so much more believable that the game. It always annoyed me how awful the lie was 😂
I mean the lie being awful is why Ellie knows that Joel is lying, but decides to leave it at his word. It wasn’t until the years went by that Ellie couldn’t live with the lie anymore, that she decides to take matters into her own hands to find out the truth for herself and has the opportunity to force it out of Joel where he can’t gaslight her anymore. Even though the lie might be more believable in the show, you can tell Ellie still knows Joel is not telling her everything that really happened
I love that Micky noticed the reaction of everybody else (especially giddy bloodthristy Rana 😂) and probably realized what that would mean for Season 2. So much fun to see reactions of those already thinking ahead vs. those just in the current season. I'm so curious how people will handle season two.
It will be controversial for sure, but I think they did a very good job with the show in prepping the viewers in regards to moral grey areas and perspectives, much better than the game did. I think this will help to flatten the curve, but I also know that "these" type of people will continue to cry about it for another 3 years to come.

You couldn't be more wrong saying that those people were focusing on the wrong parts of the story.
Suraj and Micky turned to each other when the Joel shot the docter and smiled. They get they know. That look was the look of “we know but they don’t” hahahahaaa
RIP that Doctor. That random doctor that died with no repercussions.... at all. Also another Critical Role cameo and major OG TLoU surprise: Laura Bailey was one of the nurses in the room! Kinda hoping we see more CR cameos in the next later seasons as all of them played random voices throughout the games.
She was also the voice of one of the nurses in the original game (as well as a newscaster and some other uncredited voices). After part 2 came out and she was the voice of Abby they hired someone else to voice the nurse in remakes of part 1 to avoid people hearing the nurse with Abby's voice.
Yeah, RIP to that doctor. Who, instead of doing some other tests, or trying to recreate the conditions of Ellie's condition, or maybe investigating her blood or bone marrow, decided to blow the whole fate of humanity on one potential operation.
No the farmhouse where Ellie was born is not the farmhouse from the second game. The farmhouse where Ellie was born was on the outskirts of Boston. You can see the skyline in the background. That was the initial time Anna and Marlene and the other fireflies going to Boston. The farmhouse Ellie and Dina lived in was just outside of Jackson, Wyoming
Y’all’s discussion after the reaction is why I fucking love this game man, just so dang good and I can’t wait for them to do part 2 it’s going to get even more interesting.
First off, this was, in my opinion, the best show to come out in the last decade, and the best adaptation of a video game ever. An example every other show should strive to emulate. They cut non-story relevant parts from the game to give us a better fleshed out story, with more relatable characters. The cast was amazing, though I had my doubts initially. I'm glad I was wrong. The Normies reactions were fun as always. Thank you for bringing us along on this ride. Suraj touches on a real good point that all of them dismiss too easily. The people in this world have almost universally gone over to kill first, and take what they have. How in the hell would you convince people that are determined to just kill you and take your stuff, a) not to kill you, b)believe you have an actual cure and are not just trying to trick them into lowering their guard so you can kill them, c) if they kill you before you can convince them the cure is real... then the cure is effectively dead, and Ellie died for nothing. This is what he's talking about. Never mind the idea that they can identify and synthesize an unknown substance with the equipment that is available in a post-apocalyptic world. Something that could not be done by actual experts in the pre-apocalypse world. Never mind the moral implications of "We didn't tell her, we didn't cause her any fear..." Which is complete horseshit. They didn't want her to even have a chance of saying no when she found out they were going to kill her because some dude "THINKS it COULD be a cure". The only reason to rush the surgery was to give Ellie and Joel no time to think or have second thoughts. There is zero guarantee that killing Ellie will lead to a cure. Even if it did, the second point applies.
Yeah, I find the whole 'debate' a big non-debate tbh. The Fireflies throw up so many red flags - and the practical issues are so endless - that it's absolute madness to actually expect them to make a difference in this world. Druckmann has since said that we should suspend all those practical questions and just assume that they would definitely get a cure & that it would save the world. Which is bollocks. That's not how storytelling works - the creative work needs to stand on its own 2 feet and be perceived entirely by the observer. Not with additional notes from the writer telling us what to think. Ergo, Joel's actions are entirely sound. Perhaps not in Druckmann's retconned magical fantasy world, but in the real world they would be.
They didn't even wait long enough & went straight to surgery. The previous tests on Ellie was rudimentary because they didn't even have any equipment where they were keeping Ellie . I'm not sure surgery should've been the first action plan with the ONLY immune person in the entire world.
I remember feeling so empty after finishing the game, conflicted and not knowing what i would have chosen, then waiting 7 years for Part II to maybe fill up that emptiness, but it just made me emptier. Nothing in any form of media makes me feel like The Last Of Us, i can't explain why, i just feel it.
32:31 And this is why Chris is and always will be the best of out the bunch because he’s a realist who is open minded about both sides and has valid arguments that supports and rebuttal both…anyone who thinks Joel did the right thing is delusional and emotionally selfish but those who understand why he did it are understanding parents/parents to be
I’m honestly surprised that I don’t see a lot of people connecting it to what Henry does for Sam. He also did a bad guy thing in order to save his brother
I saw a comment in Reddit that made me think. It wouldn't have mattered if they let Ellie choose. Marlene would never let her say no, and Joel would never let her say yes.
I honestly feel like bringing up "ellie's choice" is just a cop out to get away from the soul of the argument you know? She was 14, and recently traumatized. Ain't know way her choice was going to be well informed, or respected in any regard. The fireflies see her as organic material, with only (maybe) Marlene giving a shit about her as a person. Joel sees her as his daughter, and a child, and no way was he going to let a child (his child) make that choice. It's ultimately down to what you think about morality. It's the trolley problem, and that shits hard, so people look towards other ways to justify the choice(s). I'm team Joel personally, and that's because I love their relationship, and feel that that is more important than the fireflies attempts at a cure. That's the end all be all, and not many want to just come out, and say that. Just the same with the opposite. That's just what I think of course lol. Damn this game is a rabbit hole.
I had started watching The Normies years ago because none of my friends watched The Walking Dead. When that series ended I wasn’t sure what videos of The Normies to start watching until The Last of Us came out and i’m so excited to keep watching the channel as we all take on a new show together.
@@Vale9118 It wasn't the place (probably), but it was definitely meant to be an easter egg for people who know Part 2. They even had the freaking tractor out there.
One thing everyone forgets after seeing the episode is what was said in the very beginning of episode 1. There could never be a cure. If it was impossible for modern day science, then it’s unimaginable in post apocalyptic day
Haven't played the game so I might be misunderstanding/missing something here but I thought what the Fireflies were trying to do was give humanity immunity so no more people would be turned. Like Ellie. They can't cure people but they can make sure that no more people are lost to the epidemic and can gradually work towards being rid of the already infected and rebuilding in earnest. Am I wrong?
@@NaritaZaraki I think it was less about immunity and more about camouflage against infected. The "protein marker" or whatever it was made the infected believe they were already infected. I guess it is a form of immunity.
@@SkutterC Ahh. I guess that's something. But if they got bit, then they would turn regardless? No chance of replicating how the whole thing works for Ellie?

Twd is the best zombie series, TLOU is the best “zombie” (infected actually) game… the series is good, loved the references to the gameplay and all, but doesn’t stand a chance to the game nor TWD, especially the first 6 seasons
@@Ir0Mist The only character that was on this level of tlou is rick and season 3-5 carol. I was never this divided (in a good way). Yet so satisfied at the same time.TLOU did that. There were times that I was just plain frustrated and fed up at TWD, by the end of it. Just antics to get views. TWD brought back the zombie genre. But TLOU has elevated it.
@Noir Noir that's why I said tlou is more consistent also I only have like 4 characters in twd that I think are better or compare to joel I'm just saying the cast as a whole is very consistent and very well developed when you look into it
the dilemma that Joel goes through reminds me a lot to the plot in Arcane. "is there anything so undoing as a daughter?" and he was right... fuck the world. I wouldn't give up my daughter either.
Marlene knew a different Joel from who he is when she see him again here, I think that is part of why she doesn't kill him. She may not be able to conceive of a Joel who gives shit enough to storm back into a building and murder everyone. She thinks she is going to sacrifice Eliie but what she is doing is trying to kill Joel's "Baby Girl". Much like Amos from the Expanse, Joe is "That guy". In the game I was so wrapped up in that final action sequence and the urgency of saving Ellie that the enormity of what I did, or we did I guess, didn't really hit until the scene in the truck as Ellie was waking up. I sat real quiet after that, and made peace with the fact that as much as I love the dude Joel was the bad guy and by extension I was complicit in his actions. Agree with Marketa in that Ellie should have had a choice but it needed to happen before, not after Joel's rampage. I don't agree with his lie but I understand why he did, sad reality is Ellie never believed that lie. She is too smart for her own good. That being said, it made the TLOU Part 2 hit very different for me, like a really layered experience. I hope they are able to achieve that with season 2 of the show.
Lmfao true. No way dude didnt hear joel out there slaughteriing any and everyone in his way, and then pulls a scalpel on an armed man who was clearly thw one behind the shit he was hearing.
@@ProperlyGaming there is no way you can have no one guarding the long hallway in front of the surgery room. That is where marlene should have been…the final boss
Fun fact: Laura Bailey (also of Critical Role fame, The Last of Us Part II, and one of the actual nurses in this part of the game) was one of the nurses in the operating room.
joel was right simply because the fireflies were idiots and marlene was a weak (maybe not mentally but 100% tactically) leader who couldn't come up with a single coherent plan in any situation. in fact it was because of a firefly plan, a heavily pregnant woman was abandoned on her own in the woods fighting off infected that led to ellie being an orphan in the first place in my view. also i don't trust they'd have an actual plan for what to do with a cure once they had one (as you mentioned with production and distribution, which in our own experiences in the last few years we have discovered is pretty difficult before an apocalypse let alone after).
In the game there are medical files explaining all the tests the fireflies have done on people with similar conditions to Ellie and they all ended in failure.
Yeah alot of people tend to overlook this or don't know, it was never a guarantee for a cure it's just that the characters think it would of been.. Fuck the Fireflies lol
Except they weren't exactly the same. There were people with natural immunities for whatever reason but they were unable to turn that into anything. Ellie's condition was unique.
@@TahoeNevada I'd rather judge the experience what I had in the first game and at no point it says that. I cant take what someone said outside of the game as gospel and concrete because that's not in the game to think over.. plus makes me think he's said that as a retcon to make certain bits of number 2 work but I don't know when he's said that tbh.
What Joel made very clear in this episode is that he would do anything to prevent having his heart crushed again and torn from his chest. Unless you experienced loss in the same manner as Joel did with Sarah you could never fully understand what motivated him in that hospital, which I fear went somewhere beyond just love for Ellie. Joel in essence recovered a part of himself that he had lost so long ago and he's intent on never letting it go EVER again, if he can help it anyway. For 20 years, Joel has just been existing and once he met Ellie he actually began living again; so ask yourself, if you were Joel could you just give that up to go back to how you were?
Though I agree with the thinking behind this "defense", it's not really a good defense. This basically isn't different from calling him selfish, only phrasing it with "good faith", so to speak. The stronger, and at least equally valid, defense would be that Ellie did not get to choose. And she did not get to discuss the choice with (basically) her father beforehand, which is an irresponsible thing to do when a minor is involved. I think these two things were the primary motivation for Joel. That he himself could not lose Ellie was certainly on his mind, but I hope and believe that this more selfish desire would not override his love and respect for Ellie, in case that she decided on her own accord that she wanted to sacrifice herself for the greater good. If Joel acted the way he did AFTER being granted the discussion with Ellie, and her making that choice, I would 100% be calling Joel's actions selfish and evil.
@@holysecret2 even if she made the choice… she shouldn’t be given it. She would have said yes because she’s selfless and been programmed to believe she’s the only hope for the world. But no 14 year old traumatised child is equipped to make that decision which is why parents legally have to make medical decisions until children are adults. So regardless, he did the right thing in my opinion even if she had agreed to it…because legally she can’t consent.
@@kiwigirljacks I would have to see the discussion between Joel and Ellie play out to make up my mind on this. You do have a point, however this situation is also rather unique and you can't necessarily apply every-day common sense here. If I was in Joel's situation, I think I would at the very least demand they exhaust every other avenue first, do weeks, months or years of testing and research, and only then consider the lethal option. Who knows, perhaps killing her isn't even necessary in the long run. Or maybe her offspring will inherit her immunity, and they can do decades of research with the help of her bloodline. You can argue many things in favor of not killing her right away.
@@holysecret2 agreed! But even if all other options have been exhausted and taking into account it’s a post apocalyptic world, a 14 year olds brain is still not developed enough to make that kind of decision rationally and should never be required to. They’ve lived for 20 years in this world, waiting a few more until she is old enough to make the decision isn’t a big ask in my opinion.
F.Y.I. - @ 11:22 NOTICE how the silhouette of the Giraffe is in the windows (center/left window) as Ellie runs across (right to left). IMPECABLE DETAIL!!!
The point isn't whether you know for sure or not that this will work, the point is that you have hope in a hopeless world and you try anyway. You don't do experiments knowing something will work, you do them to figure out what you need through trial and error. Ellie was the last sense of hope for the world.
Considering animals are not directly infected by cordyceps like humans are, I like to imagine a scenario where escaped lions or bears start hunting the infected in the city ruins
What a great adaption. And what I love about this whole story is that both Joel and the fireflies made the wrong decision. In the end, it should have been Ellies choice. Neither Marlene and the fireflies or Joel gave that to her. And even then, you still understand where both sides are coming from.

People have gotten so used to how ubiquitous CGI is that anytime they see something shockingly magical on tv or in movies, the first instinct is "oh wow, that's good CGI"

After all these years, that ending gives me the same exact gut feeling as it did when I was a kid. They nailed this adaptation holy crap
I love how these conversations are all happening again 10 years later, such a great game and I cannot wait to see season 2/3.
If they follow the story of The Last of Us 2 then I just won't watch. There is a way to tell a story about the cycle of violence, and a way to make what was once an enemy seem sympathetic. But Naughty Dog did not do that.
@@toknowwhyuneed3593 They did, it's won the best game of the year, and it's my all time favorite. And for many others, if something didn't work for doesn't mean it's bad.
The clip of Joel flaming the doctor to death had me rolling
Joel: I'm getting old and weak, you have to take her Thommy.
Joel: Time to start a War
18:30 easter egg character :>
With the cure, why is everyone assuming the fireflies were honestly going to share any cure with anyone not with them?
Absolutely incredible. They managed to capture the spirit of the game while also expanding on it. This series is a 10/10
Laura was one of the nurses at the end. She also voiced the same nurse in the game calling you an animal after you kill the doctor.
I’m surprised she doesn’t call him an animal in the show too lol 😂
The "Swear to Me" moment, you can see Joel's heart snap in two.
It always annoyed me how awful the lie was 😂
At least there's some truth in his lie, He is the raider! 😆
IKR
@@Dark__Thoughtsit's a shame that people played this game and really got "there's a clear, black and white, good guy bad guy story being told here. I'm sure the next game will give us more happy uplifting adventures"
How naive could a fanbase be?
@@rockycuro7737 Nope, for many of those people, this game was only good because of the relationship between Joel and Ellie.
@@TealJosh well that's stupid. It's like playing a Batman video game only for the relationship between Batman and Alfred, you're kinda focusing on the wrong parts of the story.
@@rockycuro7737 1. who on earth are you to tell other people how art should be interpreted and enjoyed? 2. The relationship between Joel and Ellie is literally the main focus of the game. It's not a side story. Moreover the whole theme of both of the games is relationships, positive and negative. You couldn't be more wrong saying that those people were focusing on the wrong parts of the story.
spidey saying "oh.. i just shot him, as soon as he reached" made me absolutely die laughing hahahaha
She should be Mel next season.
Spidey was too funny "ngl, I'd have shot him faster than that"
The fact the exact same discussion is back on the table after the show ended is hilarious lol. Season 2 and 3 are gonna be so fun
I absolutely LOVE the end discussion in this episode. You guys touched on so many questions and arguments I had with friends. Thanks for this
No the farmhouse where Ellie was born is not the farmhouse from the second game.
Btw bill was in the middle of the street to draw the fire away from the house to protect Frank… that’s why he told him to go back inside 😭😭😭
32:31 And this is why Chris is and always will be the best of out the bunch because he’s a realist who is open minded about both sides and has valid arguments that supports and rebuttal both…anyone who thinks Joel did the right thing is delusional and emotionally selfish but those who understand why he did it are understanding parents/parents to be
He 100% did the wrong thing. Many of us would 100% do the same and acknowledge and understand how effectively evil we are for doing it.
I’m honestly surprised that I don’t see a lot of people connecting it to what Henry does for Sam. He also did a bad guy thing in order to save his brother
"All worth it for Ellie"
Bless her innocent heart
Another great episode, and that was my question, they didn't even know if their cure would even work
"R.I.P. that doctor..." *Suraj's face 👏👏👏
LMAO that opening ad was INCREDIBLE 👍💯👏🏽🙌🏽
That was a real giraffe. I thought it was CGI too when i saw it.
17:14 Shout-out to first reaction I've seen to mention the trolley problem!
5:24 that was my face when I saw the farm too, I love how you immediatly recognize it
Been waiting for this all day. Episode was fantastic and 10/10 show and episode

I didn't know the original Ellie was going to be in the series, but as soon as I heard her voice, I knew it was her. There was just no way.
No chance of replicating how the whole thing works for Ellie?

an unfathomable rollercoaster of emotions😕❤️
The best "zombie" tv show. It was so good. The complex story telling at its finest
Don't get me wrong the last of us is beautiful written definetly the most consistent but twd 1-7 were amazing with some of the most iconic characters
@Noir Noir that's why I said tlou is more consistent also I only have like 4 characters in twd that I think are better or compare to joel I'm just saying the cast as a whole is very consistent and very well developed when you look into it
@@Ir0Mist If one show is more consistent than another show. Than by default it would be the better show.
But to each their own.
the dilemma that Joel goes through reminds me a lot to the plot in Arcane.
I seriously love their skits to random shows
I thought I'd see some people horrified by Joel's actions and then they're all cheering lol That was depressingly funny
Dude that said “RIP to that Dr.” Then smirked at the camera. Lol. FYI Laura Bailey was one of the nurses. Everything comes full circle.
The doctor pointing the scalpel at Joel is symbolic of the fireflies intelligence as a whole.
That glance of understanding between them at 20:10 and then the cheeky look into the camera. RIP that unnamed, unimportant doctor.
What makes the hospital scenes so good is that no one's in the right.
uhhh Joel is very clearly in the right. If one side is murdering a kid and the other isn't id say the non child murders are in the right.
12:20 AWW PAPA PEDRO.
My 2023 in three words.
@@LeeH1989However, Neil Druckmann has said in the past that Ellie is 100% the cure.
Except they weren't exactly the same. There were people with natural immunities for whatever reason but they were unable to turn that into anything. Ellie's condition was unique.
@@TahoeNevada I'd rather judge the experience what I had in the first game and at no point it says that. Laura Bailey's cameo was in the surgery room, she was one of the nurses!
Joel was a selfish bastard and I was relieved he was dealt with properly in the part 2.

Yo, that intro was flippin hilarious especially when Marketa look at the camera. I wonder how many times it took to get that shot.
