My Two-Lane Blacktop 55 Chevy is a LEMON, Here's why - Road to 57 000 Subscribers

- Let's take a break from one Tri-5 to work on another..... I may have a problem. Anyways, I've had my 55 Chevy for a few years now with a stock 454/th400. Over the winter I had a hot rod 454 built and bought a rebuilt turbo 400 with a shift kit and high stall. All should be good right? So I did the drive line swap in a weekend, broke the cam in ect ect. On the first test drive, I had no high gear......
Well that saga went on for a few weeks while another transmission was being built. Once I got the new trans, I swapped them around in an evening. First test drive and I had all 3 gears! Life is good again! Until I looked down and the oil pressure was bouncing from 0-80 pounds, un good. So now that the transmission is fixed I have a motor problem. Well I'm gunna park this hot rod while I cool off a little.

Hats off to your knowledge , patience , and love for what you do .
If you want it fixed right you have to do it yourself Dan !! You know that buddy !!!!! Thanks 🙏 Mike
That 55 needs a 4 speed manual.
yeah, M20 or M21 muncie
Sing it brother
Yeah a rock crusher 😆
My thoughts exactly.
M-22 for that Two Lane Blacktop authenticity.
Check your trans modulator valve where the vacuum goes the transmission
great cars.
Love your channel.
My first car was a 57 4dr. Still have it.
I really respect your attitude and work ethic , there always be times when things go bad but you gotta keep it together and get it done. Thanks for keeping the art of rodding going.
There never a gem until you take them home and polish them up!!
Had to laugh when you screamed been there you do have a great attitude nice to see
Good video Dan. Try throwing in an extra liter of oil in the engine and see if it improves on the oil pressure issue . If it does not help, the pickup tube to the oil pump could be cracked, or broken. The pickup tube should be tack welded to the pump to prevent it from moving, or coming out of place. Sometimes a high volume oil pump needs an extra liter of oil in the pan, especially if the pan is not baffled. Keep up the good work!
Dan already welded the pickup tube i seen him do that, maybee the oil pump might not be good enough.
You Are working your way to 57K! Great job with videos!
I'm trying!
Come on people, give this gentleman subscribes. He is a very hard worker and he is saving relics from the smelting pot. Plus he needs a large garage and driveway. So be a sport and give up those greedy little subscriptions. LET'S GET -R- DUNN!
hahaha thanks buddy!
Transmission oil makes the hair so soft with a reddish hue!
haha it sure does
Dan, The 55’s valve body needs a new shift kit? Maybe a circuit is clogged? Your cars always sound awesome. Regards to the neighbors.
Bingo its got a leak internal between pressure plate and the separator plate the valve body separator plate or trans case is wrapped it's not putting fluid or atleast not full pressure to the 3rd clutch pack
You did a sweet job on that 4dr. to 2dr. Conversion...👍
I feel your pain check valve in the oil pump is the likely culprit.
@ DD Speed Shop. I watched your blue '57 4 door to 2 door swap & the rescue of the giveaway '57 recently, before I realised you had done the Two Lane Blacktop' theme on your '55. I'm in the UK and I bought a Two Lane Blacktop' clone September 2019.
It was professionally built in the UK around 2010, the guys who built it consulted with Richard Ruth, who built the original film cars, and it's got a 454 with Weind tunnel ram, Edelbrock alloy heads and twin Holley 750 double pumpers. Muncie M22 4 speed Rock Crusher, ladder bar & panhard rod rear with vented discs & coilovers, drop tube front, with 4 links, panhard rod, coilovers & vented discs. Hydraulic handbrake/line lock on the front brakes. Rear end has a spool. It's a lot of fun, and visually very close to the film cars. It also came with a 2nd pair of rear daisy mags with M&H slicks which came from one of the original film cars. It wasn't cheap, but I don't have the time or space to build one myself. Got a few cars, including a couple of other Yanks, ('88 Fox Mustang 5.0GT manual & a 2002 Dodge Ram Cummins dually), and a Toyota MR2 Mk1 stage rally car. Too many toys, not enough time/space/money. Land is very expensive over here, and my garage is just about big enough to get the '55 into, but not big enough to work on the car when it's in. Everything else lives outside.
Much respect to you doing all the work that you do, especially in Canada. It makes the UK seem tropical. I really enjoyed the blue '57 4 door to 2 door conversion. Binge watched the whole series in one afternoon. I enjoy watching you Canadian guys wrenching. You're easier to watch, and easier to relate to than your neighbors can be at times. More down to earth.
Keep up the good work. - If you'd be interested in photos of my '55 for reference, if you want make your car more correct to the film cars in TLB (i.e. drop tube front end), I have some detail on my car's build, and I could get the car up on a 2 post lift at a mate's place sometime and take detailed photos of the chassis, etc. The chassis in front of the firewall seems to be custom, not '55. Not been able to get under it yet, but the rest of the chassis is '55, with bespoke suspension mounts. If nothing else, converting your car to a 4 speed manual would solve your current transmission problems. 😉
Man you're quick we were just had a live thing yesterday and now you swap and trainees you have a love for old cars
You and Danny are doing great things, the 57 give away is a fantastic idea. Local Manitoba folks making a difference (in these trying times). I'd love to daily the 57, ice cream runs with the family ect. Keep up the good work.
Thanks buddy! Share it around so we can make the subscription goal.
Never a fail. I have told many people just because it new does not mean that it will work correctly.
Very very true
Hey Dan
I hope that you are having a better afternoon, I am sure that you will figure it all out.
Take care
More yard tetris.. I have another heap on my trailer and I need to finish the daily so I can start scrapping out junk trucks and make room around here.. I feel ya Dan. You have a lot less space than I have too, but a much easier to heat shop. The daily is getting its 2nd 700R4, the one I did for it earlier this month is doing strange stuff. Transmissions biting both of us in the ass this month. The sad part is I used to do them for a living.
Keep up the good work, your videos motivate me to get stuff done.
I appreciate your honesty about the hobby Danny. I bought a (done) 64 Falcon with a 351 Windsor. The motor was great (thank god) but she kept eating transmissions. I was ready to push her into a lake! In desperation, I took the car to a friend mechanic and said,”I give up”, please find the problem. Turns out the (done) Falcon had the wrong size fly wheel ☹️. Seriously! That cost me three rebuilds. So much for (done) hot rods, do it yourself and at least you know what you have. Frustrating hobby, but I’ll never give it up.
i know the feeling all to well haha
Nothing worse than having to do a bunch of work before you can get to work! Been there too many times! Keep up the hard work.
Momma said there would be days like this... Nothing worse than installing a"new" part and having it take a dump.I can relate to your frustration.hope the old one works better and the trans guy should make it right with you.Thump'n big block, the gasser is a beast.
You will figure it out I believe you said that's what hot rodding is all about much better than a monthly payment for new junk take care Dan
55 's motor sounds awesome!! My fav car of all !!,🖒
Good day Dan, ready to watch and see what’s going on today while I also work on the garage.
love 55 fantastic looking front end
Too much mudd in the mudd valve, spray some bug juice in it, then top off your blinker fluid and youll be driftin thru drive-thru, no problem : )
Thx 4 brangin these treasures come back to life, and showing us the inside scoop on all the details, its awesome watchin you get to the issues and fixin em, youre a great detective!
Dan, don't let it get you down, that's the way this car hobby works, you have good days & bad days, step back, take a breath, say a Prayer, you will get it figured out, my guess is it could be low on oil, it's a new motor correct? Also some of your followers mentioned something wrong with the oil pump pickup....sounds like a good place to start.....
yeah ill figure it out haha
I would add a hook with a flip latch in the wall stud & one in the ceiling stud & route the winch cable through it to do light lifting. That will take care of the front clip & various other light loads that require two people.
I shared your '57 giveaway video on a couple Facebook groups to help get you up and over the 57k subscribers.
Your channel and content is awesome btw, we need as many of these classics on the road and being enjoyed as possible.
Cheers from Saskatchewan buds 🍻
thanks buddy! appreciate the support!
Lol. Catch cans my friend... Catch cans. Besides the oil slick in the garage, great vid. Shows the absolute truth about car building and hotrodding! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching
I've have watched a "SHOEBOX" set up similar to yours run in the nines and drive people crazy, love those FIVE FIVES ! Glad you got it going, can't wait to see you get to try it out all the way. I have been going back to see all your videos !
Time for a Muncie m-22 problem solved! Your number 5 cylinder is screaming I want more air due to the crushed header tube. Love the 55 and your determination!
Haha yes and yes
I am glad that you shared this video. It shows the true nature of hot rodding. The problems go with all of the great cruising around and the fun times. I hope you figure out your oil pressure problem. Keep the excellent videos coming!
yup its a roller coaster
This video is a good representation of how my mechanic skills work out 3 out of 5 times....love the hobby!
Hot rods can push u to your limits .... love hate thing we all been there but u seam to always find the win 👌
Yep sometimes you gotta let it sit for a few months/years till you get re-interested in it.
Dan I been Lovin you , and the channel for 4 yrs I think . Started rite when ya finished long box to short box videos
Man bro I have had them days before. NOTHING seems to work, the world seems to be against ya. For every step you take forward, ya end up takin 3 back. But at the end of the day ya do what ya love and its all worth it. Yeahhh, Scooby Snacks. Thats a wicked lookin 55 by the way. Keep'em coming brutha. Snootchie Bootchies!
Yeah ill get it sorted
hi dan,i love 57 chevys,i had a blue 2dr post when i was 14,my birthday is 10/19/57 and i love all models.you and your wife have a good day.bye.
Thanks buddy!
Come on man every test run we need to go and listen to that thing run because it sounds so sweet
yeah it does sound pretty darn good
Wow a lot of frustration hang in there kid you will get it
Over the decades I’ve dumped so much cash into my Z28 - it’s part of the game
Sorry for your bad luck. The headaches will be worth it in the end.
I just picked up a 53 Mercury Monarch. It's a Manitoba car, so I have a bit of home finally out here in Ontario. 255 flat head v8, just have to figure out some carb issues I believe
My 72 Ventura has fought me hard for the last 3 years. 3 motors and 2 transmission all within only driving it about 50 miles. Happy to say now it’s running and driving with just over 200 miles on it now.
Did my part to help you reach your goal! I think it’s great that you care enough to keep a four door on the road!
Love the content! sharing to everyone! Keep up the good work!
Thanks Joey. Appreciate it!
Sad that there is almost 35k subs but this video is only viewed 15k times. You are doing great work there. Like i said before you are living moat guys dreams with the cars. Keep up the great work.
OFFERING a prayer to the Karma Gods. Because you guys are being so straight up solid you deserve balance. Pray for winter trips to South Florida and stay in my spare bedroom for a vacation.
Take the refreshed 57 through the Everglades and down the whole length of the Florida Keys and go swimming or fishing in bath water temps in Key West. Motor back to base HQ for a BBQ.
Man I hate doing jobs multiple times to no avail - even when it's not my fault I still feel like a failure. I love the can-do attitude and showing the fails when they happen. It's a true testament to your love of hotrodding!! 🍻🍻🍻 Always find the bright side my brotha ✌️
I had the same problem with my C10 th400. Opened it up and checked the governor, and the filter. All the frustration. Then my dad told me to check the vaccum module. Replaced that and now all the gears work. I wish I checked that first lol.
I had the same problem years ago. I installed motor and trans together, and bumped the vacuum modulator hard enough to bend it slightly...I had the governor out 4 times before I spotted it
Good luck with the oil pressure problem.. hopefully it is simple.. great videos
I love the Bob-Omb on the rear end, quality pin-striping and lettering as well! 👌🏼 I like the channel more and more every video I see. (19 year old from the states)
Hang in there brother! you've got this!
Dude, you're having one of my streaks of aggravation and frustration. Hope things improve soon
The vacuum modulator has a little adjustment screw up inside of the where you hook the vacuum on to it you can adjust it
I absolutely love the reference on the license plate! Made me giggle. Way more clever than the "typical" TLB Chevy tributes.
I live in Australia and if I won the 57 I would fly out and pay for transport back to aus . With the prices of them here worth it
Ooohh the hot rodding life eh Dan , I love the sound of the 55 , that car is no joke . I can’t wait to have the 57 in my driveway . Cheers
haha fingers crossed
When I win the '57 I will want that dent fixed first. Quit beating on my car! 😂
I would definitely check the oil pickup as many other commenters have already said. I learned many years ago to always put a tack on them so they don't move or fall off.
Love the 55... Another great video 👍👍🇨🇱
Man my first car was a 57 Chevy that was back in 1967 sold it for $350. can you believe that lol I never win anything just thinking of owning another 57 Chevy would be like owning a piece of heaven I would never ask God for anything again..... ya right at least not for awhile but luck hates my guts so I won’t get too excited but can’t help wishing....Oh well you guys do a fantastic job and thanks for giving me something to dream about lol 😂 😋👍
Zip ties and bias plies suggested checking out your channel and glad I did.
Every man should have your problem:
Too many cars not enough space..
Trust me Jeff, it's a bigger "Problem" than you think! 👊
It's hard to get motivated when you have to move things to work on them.
Code enforcement is threatening me with a five hundred dollar a day until I move some of my vehicles now it is a real problem as I don't have the heart to junk them
That header tube is making my skin itch.... Really love this build - When I win the 57 I will be doing a 2 door conversion!
Nice!
I love the movie two Lane blacktop !! First watch it at the drive-in . In Taylor Michigan . I have it on VHS tape. I had a 55 Belair hardtop, Black on black. Right from Detroit dragway . Drove it on the street for a while. When I was 18. Gosh I wish I still had it . Young and dumb. I subscribed. I'll be watching for more. Love old cars
Thanks Andy! Sounds like a bad ass car you had.
Keep chipping away dude ! You are a machine !
You definitely have the best channel out there 👍❤️
Hubby and I love watching your videos,,he has 3 55’s that are missing a lot of parts so he is hoping to be able to build one out of the three
My father’s best friend parked his ‘55 DelRay in 1978. We finally convinced him to get it back on the road before he croaks. So early last month he started working on it. Motor is now apart with only a few stuck valves, one stuck ring. Point is: 12 months can turn into 42 years in a flash so tell him to get off his butt and get at it!
Great video as always Dan. Thanks for sharing your Garage Time with us.
I agree with some others here, it’s either the gauge or wiring to/from the gauge. Hopefully!
Geez Dan sorry about the problems!!!! Like you said that's hotrodding. At least I'm not the only one who has them. Check oil line for kinks. I pulled my motor out 3 fuckin times once and low and behold a link under the dash. Hope you get it squared away. Nice give away 57 . Love the color
Had a similar issue with a c6 with the band too tight. simple fix. Love 2 lane blacktop super movie. Your car is sweet
Great job... keep your head up.
I had problem before and after taking numerous rides and including more fluid it started working
The faster you go, the more finicky they get. Keep the faith baby, the results are very gratifying.....
I would be so aggravated, some days nothing goes right no matter what I touch, other days things just go oh so easy. Hope your oil pump pickup isn't flopping about.
Love the Water Wetter! Great product!
That 55 is super cool. They also used the same one in American Graffiti!
If you had to own one would you choose the black one or primer one? I like the idea behind 2 Lane because the car was the story so I’d take that version.
@@RustyZipper I'd have to choose the primer one also, if it took any hits it'd just add to the character imo.
Three things cause a 400 to shift, modulator...vacuum...governor and kick down. With aftermarket kick down I wonder if it thinks throttle position is wide open. Measuring vacuum AT the modulator is always first step with KD second and governor third, however if the gov continues to hang up you have old crap from the old trans in the cooler being flushed out into the new trans...you can buy inline cooler line filters at napa
Based on your description...
I love the tag on the 55.
I love it! You have to jockey cars around too. Its like a day at my house...
Yea! Thats how hotrodding goes. I live it everyday too...
If you’re not jockeying cars around, you need a couple more. 😁
Love that 55 hopefully nothing to serious with the oil pressure boundsing up and down like that.
Dan if you are using a plastic oil pressure tube see if it has a kink in it when you hit the gas pedal it my be closing up on you I switch to a braided line no issues.i had the same problem with my big block chev my blower blew out some of the intake gasket and block up the pick tube it was doing what your car is doing good luck.
I hope your new trans continues to work. But I have had problems swapping a torque converter from a trans with problems to a new trans, it can cause the new trans to fail. Any kind of shavings or foreign material from the old trans gets circulated through the torque converter, and then you end up putting that into the new trans when you do the swap. Some trans shops have a flushing machine for torque converters. You can also introduce contaminates from the radiator oil cooler, it needs to be flushed also.
Hay Dan, Make sure the 57 is up for the road trip to Arizona.
Hi there from Northern California it is July 1st just wanted to say Happy 😃 Canada Day keep makein the videos look 👀 for them everyday
Love the cars man. Put a 4speed in the 55 :)
Awesome bro that is a cool ride
Turbo 400's use a switch to down shift at full throttle. If the switch is defective and applying the 12 volts all of the time that might be the problem. Disconnect the 12 volt wire from the side of the trans and go for a ride to see if that is the problem. I rebuilt a Ford C5 trans and it won't go into 3rd because the slide in the valve body is sticking, which could also be your problem. But first try disconnecting the wire. Jim
❤❤ I love your videos, awesome content😊
Hot Rods will teach you patience. The journey is the adventure.
I'm chomping at the bit for my 57
thanks buddy! share the channel with your friends so we can make the subscriber goal and give this sucker away
I had a similar oil pressure problem with a 350 I built. I pulled the oil pan and found that I had forgotten to torque the oil pump bolt to the cap and it was just hanging loose on the main cap. Torqued it down, put the pan back on and no problems with that again. It might also be that the oil pump pick up tube has fallen out too. It's a pain to pull the pan but it's cheaper than a new engine. Good luck.
yeah for sure
Hey Man. maybe your sump oil pickup is a bit clogged up .or check oil level first as you said. she is an awesome looking beast. I feel your frustration doing things again and again when once should do. Ahhh Cars. We love em.
I rebuilt a t350 a long time back. It wouldn't shift into drive ended up I broke a ring on the pump when I installed it. New ring and shifted perfect.
Trans builders. My 58 Chevy wagon I had nothing but bad luck with 700Rs in it . Yes, the tv cable was set right. First one blew the seal, then lost 3rd, 4th after reinstalled. Had another rebuilt then no 4th gear. After fighting it I took it back they said it had the wrong valve body. Just happy to drive the damn thing now.
Man thats a bummer.
