    i found this mic a while back and i love it.
    my band teacher was surprised when i told him i have a mic just as good as his treasured 58, if not better. he tested my xm8500 and he was floored. i love it.

    Still a really good microphone, even with the price up close to $30. I offered to help a co-worker get set up with an inexpensive and simple mic for recording training videos, and she is NOT a tech or audio nut like me. (Also, I was motivated to make it sound good because otherwise it would be my job to clean the audio up, since no one else on the team knows how.) After much experimenting, I ended up recommending a Behringer XM8500 (added a foam windscreen), with an XLR to 3.5mm cable into a USB soundcard. And although I would not use any of those 3 things myself these days, it all works damn good for her and it's just plug-and-play. Do not underestimate this microphone.

    • @danmagoo
      @danmagoo 4 года назад +1

      To update this, I ended up recommending she spend anothr $30 use that mic with a Behringer U-Phoria UM2 interface. The USB soundcard worked OK for a while but then went flaky just as I should have remembered from earlier experiments years ago. No regrets about the mic recommendation though.

    I was able to purchase 5 of these for live performances for the price of one SM58, plus if one happens to get busted lost or stolen it's only $20 to replace. Most of the gear sites have stellar reviews too. For studio recording I think it would be better to climb up the audio food chain a bit but these are plenty good for live shows.

      I actually prefer the XM8500 to the SM58. Funny he said he found the 8500 was muddier as that's not my experience. For me the XM8500 is a little less muddy and I like the boost in the mid frequencies.

    Thanks to your recommendation, I recorded about 20 episodes of my podcast using this mic (and the Behriger UCM22). I've since upgraded, but now my son (and co-host) uses it every week.
    As a guy who knew NOTHING about mics and sound less than a year ago, I can't tell you how valuable your videos have been. I am now obsessed with mics and budget audio in general, and yourself, Bronson and Bark (the Holy Trinity IMO) have provided me with countless hours of information and entertainment as I grow my new favourite hobby: podcasting with my son. This new hobby has honestly made this pandemic and extended time at home somewhat bearable, and honestly, without your help, I would never have done it - seriously. I can never thank you enough for the world you have opened my eyes to. You have literally changed my life (for the better, I think)!

    Seems like the XM8500 really thrashed the Shure SM58 with the electric guitar. The bottom end just died on the Shure, along with some volume. I recently had to use the XM8500 to mic electric guitar, and drums, I was pretty shocked that it worked out with a 20 dollar mic.
    This is what prompted me to find out more about this mic. I'd of rather used a proper kick drum mic, but the band showed up without mics, other than vocal and harmonica mics. In a pinch it saved the night.

    What cheap support would you recommend to pair with this to avoiding picking a mechanical keyboard sound?
    For voice chat purposes, every other option I found is either not cardioid, is a condenser mic with the need of phantom power, or uses USB which is bugged in Windows 8 or 10 with horrible amplification (I already tried and the amp bug is real). I assume for voice chat quality the XLR to 3.5mm cable would suffice, no need to spend extra on better quality pre-amp USB interface, right?
    THANK YOU so much for your reviews. Really awesome job with soooo many videos. Hats off to you.

    Hey, I'm just looking at getting a mic for chatting with friends when gaming. I don't want a headset (I've got nice headphones that I'd feel bad sitting there), just some nice audio quality. Antlion Mod-mics are a bit expensive here in the UK, so I was looking at something like this... Would you say this and an XLR to USB (and a stand of course) would be better than say a BR-700/800 and a phantom power supply? This would be £35 (inc stand) where the BR700/800 would be £40. Any advice would be awesome. Also, keep doing what your doing, your vids a great. Thanks.

    One things for sure. The SM58 is SIGNIFICANTLY more durable than the XM8500 and has an internal shockmount unlike the XM8500. I took both apart and although the Behringer looks and feels nice on the outside, the cheapness definitely shows on the inside. I recommend being pretty gentle with the XM8500. For $20.00 though it is excellent but there is a reason the SM58 costs more. The SM58 is a better and much more durable microphone. When it comes to sound they are both good but the comparison ends there. I like both but prefer my SM58.

    Hello! Just subbed as your videos are awesome and very helpful. I was trying to decide between this microphone and the Shure SM58 and I've made my decision to go with the Behringer XM8500.
    I just have a question for you as I'm not sure how to best set this up. I think that I am able to directly connect the Behringer XM8500 to my Mac as long as I get the right cable. However, the sound quality won't be as good as if I was to use an audio interface?
    I was looking to purchase a Scarlett Solo to use and I think that I just need a simple XLR cable to attach everything together?
    Basically, do I need an audio interface with this microphone and if yes, is it just the simple M/F Xlr cable that I need? Alternatively, will a XLR to 3.5 Jack produce a good sound quality without an audio interface?
    Thanks so much for your helpful videos! =)

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  7 лет назад

      Yes I only suggest connecting XLR mics with USB Audio Interfaces. A simple XLR to XLR cable would be all you need to connect this to a scarlett solo.

    • @Podcastage

      Internal soundcards suck, so xlr to usb would probably be the better option. If you're able, I would suggest a USB Audio Interface instead, but based on your question, it sounds like that's slightly out of your budget.

I'm on a budget but I still want to sound professional.Would you recommend the xm8500 or maybe a better sounding one within around 50$ As well as a Audio interface within the same price range? Thank you so much, your videos help a lot

      +Quocamole1206 I keep them to answer future questions about the microphones as well as future videos I do comparing items. Also, I buy every single microphone with my own money, so I can't afford to give them away. Maybe one day though.

    I recently bought a Blue Yeti to start using while i was gaming and recording. But it just picks up way to much background noise. This microphone should surely be better at not picking up background noise. But my question is that on some videos i can hear some low volume background noise, like a low volume hissing. And I want to know if it gets removed with a usb audio interface?

    So you want to tell me I can buy 5 xm800s for the price of sm58? I'm taking the entire stock!!! I actually own one and can tell that it's really good even not considering the price. Just hook it up to a normal audio interface such as behringer umc22 or something better from steinberg or focusrite and it will sound very good

    Hey, Podcastage, I need your help! Today I bought this microphone to use it simultaneously with my RODE NT-1000 mic, both of them connected to my YAMAHA console MG12XUK. But as you know, the RODE NT-1000 needs phantom power! So, if I have activated the phantom power from my console, would there be any danger of damaging the Behringer XM8500 mic? Would there be any problem at all? Would there be danger of damaging my console too? I don't know what to do! I have read countless forums about mics but there are people who claim that they could be problems damaging the mic (and the console too) and there are some others who claim the exact opposite (thet there would be no problem at all)! So, the forums haven't helped! So, what do you think? Please help!!! Thanks in advance and happy new year!!!

    Hey! Have the Behringer UM2 now in house but can't hear a difference if I use the Behringer MDX 2600 to have closed. Setup: Behringer XM8500, xlr to xlr, xlr to xlr in Behringer MDX 2600 in Behringer UM2, do you know what to do?

  • @JaX0rton

    Newbie question: can I connect this to the PC directly (using the XLR to 3.5/USB)?
    I'm guessing this needs an amp before it goes into the PC (my motherboard has a 3.5mm Jack in to accept mic inputs)

    I think my dad owns 3 of them! He said he got all 3 for $100 total, and he messed around with an Alesis mixer's EQ and made them sound the same to the SM58.

    Can I ask what software you use to record? and how the mic is configured in terms of gain etc? I bought this mic for recording but it's still picking up a lot of background noise...(XLR to 3.5mm cable into HDE 7.1 usb soundcard) I want to reduce the sensitivity if possible to make it sound more like yours in your keyboard tapping test...( I'm using audacity cos I'm on a tight budget)..thanks for any help!
