I have an 18. If you have the rattle at or after 25000km they recommend you replace the OEM tensioner with a different longer tensioner - quick job and relatively cheap. It quietened down my rattle for another 25000km. Now approaching 60000km it is ratting again and probably need to install one of those manual jobies

I will be the first to say I’m not a bike mechanic, but I am a auto mechanic, and in my field we also use hydraulic timing chain tensioners, and they can lose there prime if they set for a couple weeks, but if u hear a rattle every single day that goes away a few seconds after startup, usually the one way valve in the tensioner is worn out and bleeding off the pressure, it should hold pressure for at least a couple days, if it’s losing it’s prime over night, replace timing chain tensioner
Typically with the fz07 and fz09, even if you change the cct it can be common to still hear a slight tick for a few seconds after you turn the bike on after it’s sat awhile, it takes a good second for oil to coat everything back in the motor like clutch plates etc. so in the starting there may always be some slight chatter.

And the day i installed the manual one (i guess i didnt tighten too much) my bike made a horrible sound and i removed it as quickly as possible because that scared the 💩out of me. So i went back to the factory tensioner.
Can confirm. My '80 XS650 has a manually adjustable tensioner and it never rattles, but my wife's 2022 Ninja 400 (my WIFE's, don't judge me) tends to rattle when cold. It only has 1,300 miles or so, and it's done it since 0 if memory serves.
Common for exhaust rattle/buzzing to also sound like a loose cam chain. The exhaust servo valve in my CBR rattles around now that I did a servo delete, sounds very similar to CCT noise.
My favorite GIXXER squid mod is to install a manual cam chain tensioner and turn it in as far as you can by hand. It makes your GIXXER sound like it has a supercharger!
The cam chain tensioner does not keep cam gears from skipping. That would imply that the cams provide the power. The tensioner keeps the cam chain tight so that they don't skip on the crank shaft sprocket.

@@H.D.B.23 to save you the trouble and money, I already did that. It's confirmed that while annoying, it's not broken. It's simply a character of the motor, nothing to worry about. The time to worry is if it was a constant noise above idle and through the rpm range. 👍

Unless your pretty mechanically inclined i would recomend messing with engine chains. Cheap part doesnt equal problem free. Also although everyone says dont give a cold vehicle throttle, giving it throttle does encourage oil pickup way faster then standard idle, just dont red kine it, dont hold it for more then a second or 2, and dont do it below maybe 40°f

Solid tensioners are not a good idea. He is only partially correct. The rattle is a result of the tensioner taking up excessive chain wear. The chains stretch due to insufficient oil changes or cheap, crappy oils. Oil is necessary to keep chain cool, to help prevent stretching

Better to inspect your timing chain slack.. it can be dangerous if it really already have plenty of slack.. that's how my s1krr got a timing jump by two teeth.. luckily only two teeth and i realized the difference or it can be catastrophic failure.
MT10 is best motorcycle, period. I have an '80 XS650, '94 FZR600, and my next Yamaha is either going to be an XSR9 or an MT10. MT10 has that sweet, sweet crossplane I4 so that's obviously the priority 😁
Bro there’s not one single average joe that watches your videos that need a manual chain tensioner.. you left out that they will have to make sure and keep it tight or the chain will jump and jump timing and screw up their engine if they don’t really stay on top of it. Most people can’t change their oil and filter.. much less tighten a chain tensioner every time they service and maintain their bike.

My 2023 GSX S1000 is like it. A little bit of noise for a few sec than silk smooth . Now at 15,000 KM and the exact same thing.

Most automatic adjusters have a ratchet system so that it can't slacken off. If you hear a rattle you shouldn't just assume its that.

On my 2014 636, I didn't have the rattle on startup, but I get the rattle starting at 6k and stop at 7k. Don't know why yet.
