The good news progressing from late latent stage to tertiary syphilis is quite rare so tbh once you've gone through stage 2 it's no big deal really especially in the late latent stage cos it ain't even infectious anymore
It can cause a person to go blind, damage the heart, eyes... They may not be contagious to others once treated, but the damage done to their brain, eyes, heart, etc... is usually irreversible.
It being infectious in the Layton stages isn't the issue... But If you dig deeper you'll discover ancient remains dating back to the early Roman empire which has the legions of syphilis. And that dates back to the 1200's! In Europe they discovered remains under a church dating back to the mid 1300's
