As someone who works in Cyber security, if it connects to the internet. It can be hacked
And even air-gapped equipment can be hacked too!
Stux didn't even need internet 😅
@jeroen1989 absolutly! Moral of the story, if you are the target of a Nation state actor, chances are you will be hacked.
Edit: if you're not already 🫠
Sure. Though as someone who works in IT, there’s a whole load of so fucking what going on. Good systems architects aren’t storing any data that would mean anything to the hackers even if they got in. Self validating and repairing data systems aren’t getting broken by hackers either. They’re exploiting our own laziness and systems built upon immature systems and never truly redesigned for the modern risk. If anything their behaviour will just move us towards more robust systems. It might be cat and mouse but they’re the driving force behind an evolution that will see us make leaps and bounds forward than we might not have even been bothered to do had the threat not been there.
@matthewyabsley oh absolutely, don't get me wrong, short of quantum computers there are some encryption algorithms and storage techniques that are very much nearly impenetrable. One of the many problems for blue team guys is that you don't always need to break the encryption or hack a rock solid system by going in through the front door. Look at the SolarWinds hack. It was a supply chain attack where the (likely) government targets were not where the exploited vulnerability was located. The compromise occurred on the vendor that pushed out the updates to the network devices that the "targets" used. AT&T was JUST hacked, Microsoft hacked numerous times, Google hacked numerous times. And at the end of the day, if valid credentials are stolen, then you don't need to hack anything lol All im getting at is if something hasn't been hacked, it just hasn't been targeted by the right people/nation state for a long enough period of time. Crazy world we live in man
They should receive scrutiny. Look what they do to their own citizens. Why wouldn't they want to also control everyone else?
And what about the US interfering in other countries, rigging elections, propping up dictators and puppet regimes that are friendly to them and allow them to use their oil fields? Why aren't we scrutinizing the western countries that do the same thing?
Amazing that people with so much power get mad and the only thing they think they can do is to try and ruin everyone else to make themselves feel better. Like you are making the world a significantly worse place because you are acting like children.
don't use tiktok
China is so behind the likes of the US when it comes to dark shit... like torturing people. Take your blinkers off and wake up to the fact that the US has been at war for over 200 years, and all for profit!
@@tripsaplenty1227 They’re already on almost every phone, tablet, and computer in North America and Western Europe. TitTok was their way in and everybody happily laid out their welcome mats because it was a great new way to bring attention to anyone whether they deserved it or not. I cannot understand how such an obvious spy tactic was so warmly welcomed here in the West.
Oh thank god I was withdrawing from the lack of Simon Whistler It's been a whole hour since I last saw a new Simon Whistler channel

Hi Simon. Give it hell and Godspeed!
Solution: Lean on big tech to be accountable for the manipulation
I'm not sure technology can solve the gullibility of the average human though. They already flag information as misleading or truthful, but people have already decided what they want to believe and claim everything else that disagrees with them must be some sort of conspiracy.
McAfee, lol. That's so funny. Do people still use that piece of rubbish?
Always the best from Simon and team.

And just who approved a change in glasses? 🤨
Whoever did his laser eye surgery, I guess.
Thanks for my daily scare, Simon
People give me side-eye for not doing anything personal online...even emails.
I forever hear "it's a secure site"... Is it though? If governments can be hacked en mass, why should I trust a company??
"We should be careful to get out of an experience only the wisdom that is in it and stop there, lest we be like the cat that sits down on a hot stove lid. She will never sit down on a hot stove lid again and that is well but also she will never sit down on a cold one anymore." -- Mark Twain
The reason you get the side-eye is because you apparently avoid doing even harmless things online. Do I really care if a foreign government knows how much my e-mailed electricity bill is? Having me refuse to accept it via e-mail doesn't stop them from hacking the company and getting the information that way, so it would seem unnecessary to avoid it on my part.
The musings of a man that lived and died generations ago, apply little to today's world.
When an unknown entity can act an oblique foray from un unknown land, without leaving the comfort of their seat, only the foolhardy would throw caution to the wind.

If you can get a hold of a filled out SF-86, you have everything you need on that person. Those things are insanely detailed. And EVERYTHING has to be filled out to turn it in.
If you're curious, you can find blank ones online. That should give you a good idea for how well they need to be protected.
I actually received a letter that mine was one that was hacked when that thing kicked off.
I've just given up and assume everything about me is online.
Great video.
Love your fact, telling channel.

Simon upset the trolls. 😂
What Chinese and communist ones?
Time to call liberty prime!
Even the MAGA trolls are upset about Simon referencing their attack on democracy.
Explains why the countries of Sweden and Finland wanted to join NATO. It's not just the war in Ukraine that has them worried.
Note that google claiming it was highly sophisticated is a given for any attack that does anything. Even if the ceo used password1 as their password and some rando guessed it. Seriously google is NOT going to say they got "p0wnd by a noob".
That's true, but usually tech companies release a lot of technical detail about how the attack happened, so in most cases there is some evidence that it really was a highly sophisticated attack.
Love the new glasses Simon 😎
I like when we act like we are not doing the same thing 😂
It happened in New Zealand only a week or two ago.

How many channels does this dude have
I like his point about how in many ways the idea of a threat is often more dangerous than enacting the actual threat. Being a 20 something in the US around 9/11, I can say that as devastating as the t-rists were, the government and its complicate population actually did more long term damage to America and its basic freedoms. Same idea follows after the medical, political, and racial chaos that occurred in 2020.
I'm not sure who said this, but I often find this to be way too true- "I have met the enemy, and he is us".
As for the infamous January 6, 2020 events that occurred, that is another can of worms too large for this particular post
Not quite the same but once I worked with a lady who had a spider run across her desk and she got such a fright she stood up, tripped on her chair, fell over and broke her hip. She had to have a hip replacement just because she was fearful of the spider, but had the spider actually bitten her she would've had nothing more than an itchy lump for a week. So like you said, the idea of the threat can cause people to react in ways that end up far worse than the actual threat itself.
@@vink6163 I like your story better. It's apolitical, uncontroversial, and sticks the landing perfectly with undeniable, observable facts. Well done

I don't think Beijing actually are all in "for either left or right part"
It would benefit more with "divide and rule' AND Let the Americas and other nations fought amongst themselves (in EU etc too)
In short~ its better for the race to be tight with whoever coming up on top only winning by X margin that his/her seat isn't completely secure or have restrictions as minority government.
Map in the intro is wrong.
Information campaigns are easy.
China buys advertising space on YT for their state sponsored "news and propaganda" channel "Epoch Times" to target users using YT to do the targetting work.
Google accept advertising money to be the delivery vehicle for these campaigns.
I have many screen captures as examples.
And people continue to download tictok 🤷
Every day is more and more exhausting 😞
I really do LOVE the Format of Into the Shadows. However, this Video was really too short, even compared to the usual length that tends to be close to double this one.
And this Subject is so complex that I believe that you'd really be better off using a longer Format to tackle it. At least 40-45 minutes would be needed to do anything more than such a superficial overview _(like what was done here)_ that in the end, it's not even remotely informative enough!
I do understand that your Writers each have their own Areas & Fields of Expertise and that if they deviate too far from what they really Studied and Master as Subjects & Topics, the Results wouldn't be really good nor up to the usual Standard, just as is the case with some of your Channels (anything touching Physics & Astrophysics, for the initiated, sadly falls way short of what we've come to expect from your Work in general), showing how even if properly Researched, it's not enough.
So I totally understand that you, Simon, would need outside Sources, Writers, to properly express those Subjects.
However, in the case of such Topics as this, you'd certainly need a the Expertise of an Author who's very well Versed in the Subjects.
Just a Penny for your thoughts!

Maybe, if they had a special Final Boss kind of puzzle that had to be solved correctly the first time hackers wouldn't be able to hack?

Which is why i do nothing of any real value online. Or paper either, for that matter. I leave very few traces of anything personal Anywhere, aside from everyday debit card transactions for gas, food & the like. I pay for bigger purchases in cash. I dont have a credit card. I dont own a home that i make payments on. I buy all my vehicles with cash. And, i really only use the internet for games & watching videos. Woah, you should ask Taiwan if they consider themselves a part of China before you just include them as such in a graphic ….
they do. Just not part of CCP China. Educate yourself. Taiwan still claims control over whole continental China. And I wish one day they can have it.
Taiwan is the original China, where the legitimate government fled to when the current ones took over. In Taiwan's eyes, it's all one China, just with the Taiwanese in charge...
@@vink6163Not true, not anymore anyway. Few, if anyone, has thought that in the last fifty years. Certainly not the younger generations. Taiwanese people now tend to consider themselves Taiwanese, completely seperate from the mainland.

Ah yes the january 6th insurrection. Where the cops literally opend the doors and let people in and walked them around.
The damage done to Americas capability as well as to our reputation and authority on the world stage as a result of snowdens leaks cannot be overstated. The ripples of damage have continued to spread since day zero and, if allowed to continue in the trajectory currently trending, will lead to either the downfall of the US as a global presence or a catastrophic world war. I hope he sleeps well in knowing the method by which he chose to ease his delicate sensibilities & conscious have placed millions of American lives at risk from adversaries who are in turn, conducting the exact same espionage tactics. Theirs are simply being maintained under state secret by more loyal and pragmatic members of their respective armed services.
The way Russian hackers *attempted* to do in 2016?
And why exactly should i care now after all we can be pretty confident that al the major players in world politics do that but if the usa does it its defense of freedom stop the hypocrisy seriously 😂😂😂

They don't need to hack anything anyways. They've been changing public opinion on tiktok for years...
Edward Snowden could help us solve this conspiracy 😏
Assuming he's pardoned of course and able to leave his place of exile - Russia 🇷🇺
I am from the US. Every country that has the capability to do this, is doing it. So lets not demonize every country that we do not agree with
That is a lot of false equivalency.
Would you argue that all wars are the same? Is the German attack on Poland equivalent to Ukraine's defense of their homeland? Is all war the same or does motivation and goals matter?
What about cyber wars? Is spying on China to determine if they are going to attack Taiwan equivalent to Chinese stealing intellectual property or trying to undermine democracy?
Ya fuck that shit, we will keep calling out China for their bullshit
Information campaigns are nothing new. But every country that uses the internet that way only does so for near peer countries they're in competition with. This isn't sobering everyone does to everyone else, this is just sitting a couple handful of countries do in their circle. And it's only one of the ways their governments tries to influence the other.
As much as I like the Whistler channels, it is a little cringe when the "Russian hack" is brought up as legitimate.
In this context its a reasonable concern regardless on your opinions on the actual matter. As Simon always say in CasCrim, all you need is reasonable doubt
