    A few things: (1) Yep, I realized I f*cked up the model number early on in the video. Hey, it wouldn't be a proper Zero Fidelity review if I got everything right on the first try. (2) I should have mentioned the ridiculous model number as a caveat. Seriously. It's ridiculous! (3) Please bear in mind that all of my comments about this speaker are in correlation with it's price. It's good for what it is, but don't expect miracles. Just expect good sound for a very reasonable amount of coin.

    Hey dude just wanted to let you know you are 100% right about these beauties. I actually got the tower version but they are comparable. So clear on the highs. I was struggling with some pioneer fs52s and decided to try these. WOW. Just about perfect. The towers are a little short on deep bass, but paired with a sub it is phenomenal. I've never been a super Sony fan, I was a little sheepish walking out with these from the store. Once I had them set up at home it was incredible. Ended up getting the center channel too for movies. Thanks for your review, I probably wouldn't have given them a shot otherwise. I am over the moon about these, couldn't be happier.

    excellent review. I have a pair of these Sony speakers on stands hooked up to an inexpensive Yamaha receiver in my bedroom with wall-to-wall carpeting. The sound these speakers produce often keeps me in the bedroom longer than I should stay in the bedroom. My GF likes them also, my wife -- not so much.

    I just saw this review today so I went to Best Buy and they were on sale for 119.00 so I figured what the hell 100 bucks no big deal. I already have the Elac B6-2.0. I got to say I am impressed with these Sony's for there price they sound better then the Elac's to me because the Elac's had a lot of sibilance in the highs. These Sony's don't do that. The Elac's do have a little better base buy the Sony's sound good for the price. Thumbs up for the great review. I am no audio file just love listening to music on my off days from work.

      James, i too have Elac Debut Reference speakers and Elac Debut 6.2s. Just got a pair of these Sony speakers and putting them to the test. I also had a pair of Fluance Signature Series Surround HiFi Bookshelf speakers purchased last year as well during the hibernation of COVID. I created a finished basement studio setup to listen to My Music ( I'm 69 yo and now retired due to spinal issues), and the studio serves to play music for my drum playing ( which I picked up as a Hobby after a 50 year hiatus). So far out of the box, the Elacs are def better. They are a bit brighter than the Fluances. I got them on Amazon , so if i decide to return them it is not an issue. The Fluances seem to offer a little more umph than the Sonys, but the Sonys seem to offer a little more detail. I play the 2 pairs paralleled on a IOTA SA3 integrated Amp stacked with a IOTA PA3 AMP. My test will continue...... I'm a bit undecided whether to "shelve" the Fluances, return the Sonys, and get a pair of Emotiva T1+ floor standing speakers. I'll post my opinion results as updates later. Be well and safe

    Don't expect these to sound better than most $500+ speakers. They are a killer deal as long as your expectations are realistic. They also scale really well with the equipment you use. They do like over head power.

    Don't everybody freak out but here's what I'm running in my second bedroom used exclusively as an 'office' music room. Starting with a Sony 5.2 ch receiver paired with an old Realistic EQ coming out of my desktop Gateway. I've been running this exact set-up in here for about three years with absolutely no problems. Here's my speaker setup......six SS-CS5's on top of the desk (very large desk) with a pair of older Radio Shack 15in PA speakers with the desk sitting on top of them. Two Polk T-15's in parallel on a shelf above my 42" monitor. For the rears on each side I have a SS-CS5, Polk T30 (verticl), Yamaha NS 6490 as well as a 10" 100W sub on the floor. I have a little fan (ultra quiet) sitting on top of the receiver for a little xtra cooling. I never have any heat issues and enjoy INCREDIBLE sound in this room. Have some 18"X18"X4" foam wall treatments to help with reflections and deaden the room a little bit. In total I'm running 8 SS-CS 5's, two 15" three way radio shack's, two Polk T-15's, two Yamaha 3 way's and two Polk T-30's and the Yamaha 10" sub.

    A very accurate review. 😬👍👍
    I still enjoy my SS CS5. Use it for my bedroom stuff. Best value for money speakers.
    The highs are nice, bass sufficient. In the bedroom I don’t need a sub when watching DVDs. The bass is good enough. Won’t shake the whole room but sufficient to enjoy a DVD.
    If only the mid range were more pronounced. That would make it an amazing set of speakers for its price.

    I just purchased a pair of SS-CS5's to replace a pair of Polk T-15's. They are connected to a KLH sub woofer and a modest Sherwood receiver. I am very pleased with the sound quality - they blow away the Polk's. I now hear details and individual instruments in recordings that I have never heard before. I bought them at Best Buy for $124.99. They are well worth the investment.

    Thank you so much for an honest review. You weren’t “overhyping” by any means. I understand your concern about that though. Just like any other industry, the typical philosophy is if it isn’t expensive or a hyped/ extremely sought after brand, then it’s considered garbage even when it’s not.

    Interesting review ....in the past 3 years I’ve owned the Pioneer (BS22’s) and Elac Debut 5’s,6’s and UB5 ....and for the last month a pair of these Sony bad boys. There is definitely something special going on with a bizarrely huge soundstage and spooky imaging emanating from these cheap looking Sony boxes...I prefer them even to the UB5 which has better bass albeit a tad slower but cannot match the top end clarity of the Sony or those crazy imaging properties Sony designed into the SS CS5.....great fun !

    Sean, you seem very excited about these Sonys. The Cheapaudioman did too. Just got a pair. For the money , I think I agree. I also have a pair of Fluance Signature Series Surround HiFi Bookshelf speakers. Those seem more Rich in sound. But i still need to "burn in" the Sonys. I'm playing both on a IOTA SA3 and PA3 stack. I'm still toying with acquiring Emotiva B1+ or T1+ speakers . The B1s are out of stock now at Emotiva.

    I don't know how people say these have a larger soundstage than the Pioneer BS22s, it certainly sounds a lot smaller to me. These have better treble and detail retrieval, but I think the tonal balance on the Pioneers is superior. I recorded some pink noise on both of them and the results seem to confirm that as well. They sound a bit clinical, but I think they're superior for movies. Not convinced so far when listening to music - I'm not sure what my choice will be.

    I own the sscs 3's and they have all the same attributes. They sound really great for music, especially when backed with a sub. I use them for my surrounds because my room is big and my fronts are huge. They sound great for effects and background. Nice and crisp with good bass when its needed. I have an external amp for my fronts but my Onkyo receiver has plenty of power to drive my the Sony's. They get pretty loud and still sound good. My point is, if you need a little more than the bookshelves can provide, the towers are real nice with a similar sound, 2 woofers instead of 1, the same tweeter combo and a little more power handling. I also own the sscs9 sub and the sscs8 center. All really nice for the price, I would recommend any of them.

    Thanks for the excellent work. You were spot on with the Elac B6.2 which I went out and bought for $150 on sale at Best Buy and the 10" sub. They are great together. Looks like I have to try these out. Amazon has it for $118. That's about the cost of a bowling and movie night. Much better than trying the ultra expensive stuffs which would usually cost me up to $500 when I'm done with it.

    I bought 2 sets on sale at best buy for $89 a pair. I think total with tax was $193.64 for 4 speakers. I hooked them up to my shop stereo 5.1 5 channel jvc 500 watt reciver. I added a sony subwoofer I had off of old surround sound system. I got them playing in a 80 x 120 shop & they sound amazing. The sound bounces off the walls I very rarely have stereo over 1/2 on volume or you can't hear anybody talking. When it's cranked I can hear it prob 100-150 yards out in the field.

    They're going for about $73 now if they seem a bit bright put a 1 ohm non- inductor sand cast resistor 7 Watts in line with the tweeter at the terminal, might need a 0. 7 ohm resistor for the super tweeter.
    I think they need a couple of subwoofers probably 8" to 10" to get the best out of them crossing over about 140hz should sound very good what are they like with the iotavx amplifier I would of thought that would be a good match especially with the subwoofers. I think if I'm not mistaken it is not restricted on frequency out for sub so a filter might be desirable a RCA plug socket. Enjoy the rest of your Christmas and hopefully better New Year

      Yup -- and there are several enclosure resonances that are pretty nasty. OK for the money when on sale, but not a good speaker overall -- and the supertweeter is a marketing gimmick. www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/sony-ss-cs5-3-way-speaker-review.13562/

    I picked up a pair last month at Best Buy for $80 for the pair. Glad I did. I thought that with the supertweeter and small woofer that they would be bright, but they are very neutral. I've been running them without a subwoofer, and they present a pretty full sound. A good subwoofer would be a good complement to these, certainly, but they're surprisingly full without one. Imaging is great. Outstanding value.
    How they compare to Elac's, I don't know (probably can't go wrong with either), but I do know I'm impressed with these Sony's and enjoy listening to them. My advice would be to consider paying the extra money to get the floorstanding model - sscs3 I believe.

    I'm a cheapskate and never planned to spend money on a real sound system, it just costs too much and it was hard enough to convince myself to buy a used soundbar to improve on my TV speakers.
    But with a cheap used AVR and catching the SSCS5 on sale for just $75... it's too good of a deal to ignore. Really nice quality and reviewers say they can't be beat until you get into the $250+ range (where I will never be)... so I've got a sound system that'll last me for a long, long time.

    I think the sound from this Sony is just O.K. Bass (driven by 150 watts Parasound 2125) is still a bit boomy, hollow, not as well defined as my 25 years old NHT Superone. I found most of rear port bookshelf speakers I had before have that issue. Treble is more open (than NHT) though. The midrange is fine, not as good as the other bookshelf I had, Tannoy Mercury F1. At low listening level, the low end is almost lost partially attributable to rear port. My front-port Tannoy performs better in this regard. Overall, for the price, it is a good, non-fatiguing performer but nothing really stands out except treble.
    Update: after filling in the somehow boomy, hollow bass with my AR subwoofer, wow, it turns this bookself to a powerful full range giant that really impresses me. The top end is airy, articulate but, again, not fatiguing. In particular, it plays piano and violin very well.

      dgassie ... I got a set and I did hook them up to my Audia Flight FLS10 with a REL T5. REL was set at a mere 15%-20% volume and that makes these little speakers sound much bigger when listening at moderate volume.
      The kick drum on Hotel California (acoustic version) sounded deep.

    Building a 7.2 system around 6 of these. A core series center and 2 of the same series 10' subs. Should be nice compared to my old sold with reciever speakers I've had since 2008.

    Perhaps this is a birthday gift I will give my sister's daughter, as she loves listening to music. If one runs it through a software called Amarra 4 through Tidal HIFI, since Amarra (Sonic Studio) is a good EQ, then coloring the sound for music genre and personal taste, if one has a strong amplifier, one can also get one pair of deeper bass too.

    Hi. Nice review. Would a tube amp get the most out of that bass?

  • @HoomanR17
    @HoomanR17 6 лет назад +2

    Hi. I realize this question may seem like a similar question I asked before about a product that you may or may not have heard but I feel it may be different enough in that its asking for your best judgement given you vast experience with speakers in general. I'm looking for a low cost "first" system, with the hope of in the future upgrading. If I'm looking strictly for a two channel, audio/audiophile experience, detailed and revealing sound, would I be getting closer to that reality by looking at the tower version of these speakers (SSCS3) or would I be moving away from that (assuming in both scenarios I will want to have sub-woofers in the system) ? While I wish to know the answer to this specific question, I think the general question may also be, is the floor standing version of a bookshelf speaker going to sound, less or more musical? Less or more detailed? less or more revealing, less or more "holographic". Or is the rule here apply across the board, can't know till you hear each of them myself? Thanks for your thoughts.

    • @ZeroFidelity
      @ZeroFidelity  6 лет назад +2

      Hooman - If you can accommodate the towers, go for those. You'll get the same exactly sound as the bookshelf speakers, only you'll be getting 'more' of it. To answer your other question:
      By and large, speakers within the same 'family' will usually sound very similar to one another. The floorstander will sound like a bigger version of the bookshelf speaker, and visa versa. That said..
      Bookshelf speakers *can* in fact offer slightly better imaging (due to the smaller baffle area) as well as quicker bass (due to the smaller, more structurally rigid cabinet). The larger floorstanding loudspeaker, by contrast, will usually offer up a fuller sound - particularly throughout the lower midrange and bass. Floorstanders also tend to be more power efficient (easier to drive), more dynamic, and are capable of playing louder than their bookshelf counterparts.
      Both options are valid. It's just a matter of choosing what you can accommodate, afford, and what ultimately suits your tastes the best.

    Nice review of the SS-CS5's. The Sony SSU series in the 70's were good speaker systems too. Pretty hefty at 22lbs. and decent sensitivity at 87 dB's. Still though not much deep bass with a low frequency listed at 53dB (not even a +/- rating). I suspect they'd make good satellite speakers. Although the 3/4" super tweeter would give excellent dispersion. I'm still using a pair of EPI-100's in the dining room and get great sound (bass to 45Hz, +/-3db). Bet the CS5's would get better bass in a corner against a wall if they weren't reflex with the port on the back. Wouldn't mind givin' them a listen.

    • @daniannaci3258
      @daniannaci3258 2 года назад +2

      You still have EPI 100’s?? Loved them! Great bass, sweet treble, recessed midrange. I bought my pair in 1973 when I was in junior HS with paper route money. Paired them with a Dynaco ST-70 tube power amp ($70 then), Dynaco PAS-3X pre ($50 with Telefunken tubes) and a Thorens TD-121 ( a TD-124 but single speed, no clutch, no strobe) with an Empire 980 tonearm (all for $20) from a radio station going automated and dumping their turntables. I didn’t know I had what might be considered now a high-end system. Had it for 20 years until the woofer surrounds rotted and the magnets fell off the tweeters 🤣. Sold the Dynacos and Thorens in the early 90’s at the beginning of the tube revival and used the money to buy a used Krell KSA-100 and a pair of MartinLogan electrostatics. Thanks for the memories!

      @@daniannaci3258, had to google your Krell amp. WOW, totally freakin' amazin'. Class A, 1600w into 1 ohm. out-fucking-standing. A remarkable product. I never got into separates and stayed a stereo receiver guy. My first system in 1974, after military service and broke was a Pioneer SX-434, BIC 920 and KLH 31 speakers all for under $240. I didn't get the 100's till 1980 as extension speakers for my Ohm L's. The EPI-100 (1969) is probably the BEST budget speaker ever built and stayed in the EPI line into the 1980's. Still a very good budget loudspeaker. Wouldn't call the midrange recessed, just not the West Coast forward "in your face" midrange of JBL, Cerwin Vega or Altec fame. The 100 was a well balanced system. Hats off to Winslow Burhoe. I did replace the 100's with EPI-180's for two years and then found my "dream" speakers.
      In 1978 when I purchased the Ohm L's I really wanted the model H's but couldn't afford the $700+ price tag. Last year I got fully restored, sonically and cosmetically, Ohm H's (from early 1980's) for $275 the pair. A freakin' steal. Alas, the 100's are boxed up with the 180's in storage. Not familiar with electrostats, a friend had DCM Time Windows but not sure if they're electrostats?? Have a "mini" system in the kitchen, SX-434 (rescued from the trash and restored for $60), Nakamichi BX-1 cassette deck and Boston Acoustics A-40 and Synergistics S12B speakers. Would like to hear that Krell amp driving a pair of Electro-Voice Interface D systems. Happy listening my friend.

    if you ask me from a engineering standpoint, entry level speakers like these are good engineering. why? because they hit high levels of performance while being affordable. that's what engineering a good product is all about. it's like how GM can make a $65k corvette that competes with a $400k ferrari.

    • @carlosoliveira-rc2xt

      A $65,000 Corvette doesn't compete with a $400,000 but in a couple of superficial ways.

    I'm not sure if this fact is mentioned in the reviews: These are 6 ohm speakers? They are a bit Brighter than my Fluance Signature Series HiFi bookshelf speakers. I have a question: How would you connect these Sonys or other speaker for that matter to your PC. What cable is used? off the headphone jack but how do you connect to the speaker jacks? Never did that before? Or do I need a small AMP (like a Schiit product?) .

    Picked up a pair after watching this video. Thanks so much for reviewing these. I was originally going to buy a pair of JBL Studio 230s (something I'm still considering) Do you have any experience with these? I'm looking for speakers that are clear and detailed (not overly bright or warm) and play well at lower volumes in a smallish room My main concern is for classical, jazz and acoustic to sound clean, tight and relatively smooth. Btw I'll be using an Onkyo A-9110

    • @marvinmurakami8828

      I got a pair of these on Amazon when they were on sale for 73 dollars. Whenever Best Buy puts them on sale for 75 dollars, Amazon sells them for 73.
      But these sound fantastic with great imaging and huge soundstage. They are clear and detailed and would be perfect for the music you listen to. The jbl studio 230 are much larger speakers with 6 1/2" woofers and play louder with stronger and deeper bass. They are clear and detailed as well but cost around 400 dollars for the pair.
      So your decision should be based on how large of a room you have.

    Man... I bought them based on this review, ok but not giant killers. They sound mostly ok, but the midrange is ehh. They did not do acoustic guitar nor Diana Krall justice. Yeah they got a bit more bass than I expected but not worth keeping. Fluance sx6w at $150 pair have better quality of sound. Even the polk tsi100s $140/pair sounded better at this price range. Or save up a little more and upgrade to... PSB Alpha B1 at 180/pr or Wharfedale d320 at 200/pr.
